I was the supervisor of the largest community education center (Mullanphy) in St. Louis City (now retired). The youth attending the center were primarily 12 to 20 years old. We had a rule that in order to play basketball, you had to have three tutoring hours a week at the center, even if you were an honor student. I managed to get the honor students to tutor their peers if they were interested. I have been coaching students since 1985, from middle school through high school, as well as taught on the adjunct faculty of three community colleges. I like working with students, although my professional career was in business more than education. I have always got along well with youth and find it a worthwhile activity especially now that I am "semi-retired" and have more freedom with my schedule. You need to be consistent not gullible but respectful. What's easy for one person can be Greek to another. People learn differently, and the key is to find the key to each individual.
