The two guys who came for my move were great Went to the task immediately in spite of difficult physicality of the job. They had to deal with moving large, awkward furniture down fire escape like stairs in sleet and snow and did a great job. At the end of the move when all was placed into a storage facility, one of the movers was honest to report they forgot a bed with frame. They did not charge the extra hour it took to go back and get it.thank you for a great experience. I will be happy to recommend this service forward to my friends and relatives if they need a mover.

These two were really great. They were super fast and efficient movers and kind people. They also texted and messaged me to make sure I had all my questions answered and that we could schedule a mutually convenient time. Would definitely recommend!

Ben Petty and his workers are exceptional and much less expensive than the "major" movers. I would hire him again in an instant. For a relatively small job, everyone else was quoting $600-800. He did it for half that. Very trustworthy too. I'm a big fan.

Both movers from AJ Hauling arrived on time as promised. The men were very courteous as well as careful to ask if something was to be removed or not. I will definitely call them again because I have other things to move . If you are reading this review and you are looking for quality movers, look no further! This is the company to choose.

We had a great experience with Quality 1 Movers! The movers did a great job loading the truck and made the most use of the space. They handled everything with care. They also wrapped all the furniture well to protect it all. This was our first time using movers and it was well worth the money!

I first hired Full Service Moving on a lark. I had bought an antique bedroom set off of Facebook market, and I needed experienced movers stat. Ryan was incredibly responsive, and he and Otis knew exactly how to handle the furniture. I was so impressed with them that when they mentioned that they did longer-haul, full-house moves, we cancelled our appointment with Mayflower, and hired Full Service Movering. They moved my entire house in Southern Illinois to STL in one day. The truck was masterfully packed. Nothing got broken. The team remained consistently upbeat, and they never dogged it. I have had some really terrible movers in my time, and I have had some adequate. I really like Ryan, Otis, and their team. Also, they were really communicative. A great experience. I would use them again, and I strongly recommend their services.

My experience was good with Moving LLC. I appreciated that the movers were on time, worked quickly and efficiently. They were working hard the whole time and took very minimal breaks. My only complaint is I was told in messages in Thumbtack that there were no additional fees, service charges or taxes from the hourly rate. The contract was prepared with a $100 service fee and taxes (8.xx%). When I questioned this, the service fee was waived but I still had to pay the taxes. While I appreciate the service fee waived, it should have never been listed! I just feel this was sneaky. As for the taxes, I was told in writing there would not be taxes and then they were added and could not be waived. That part was annoying. The mover themselves were good. At the end when I paid, I gave a tip for each of them and I did not feel the tip was appreciated. It was a decent tip. I was not expecting them to grovel over it, but a little appreciation goes a long way. After all, a tip is not required. Over all the move went well and the company was good.

Two guys showed up to help move stuff out of my storage unit to a moving truck. They worked hard and didn't slack off to run up the time. A few things did break moving stuff from the unit to the truck, but the damages were able to be hidden when I set up at the new place. I guess a few things getting broken on moving day is expected though. All in all, if you want a team of strong dudes to move your stuff, that will work hard, and listen to directions - this is your team. If I need stuff moved in STL, I'll deffintly hire these guys again.

Great Nation Moving is the most professional, honest and stress-free moving company I have hired and as we move often I find myself to be quite experienced with dealing with moving companies. We moved from 644 miles ,the movers packed and loaded our belonging in two days and delivered on the third day in torrential downpours the entire time, I cannot recommend them enough. The process with Great Nation Moving did not require much effort or stress from my part and the movers worked very efficiently. The administration staff is very responsive and eager to please. I cannot recommend this company enough

I had the great fortune of meeting Quinny when I had an emergency move that required moving my car and belongings halfway across the country. I have now moved around 20 times in my lifetime and this was by far the best experience I've ever had. Honest, professional, and on time. In addition to the physical move, Quinny also helped pack my breakable items. Everything I own arrived intact - nothing was broken and no scratches on furniture. It was an easy, flawless move. This premium quality move was also much more affordable than quotes I received from well known moving firms. And to top it all off, Quinny is also quite the mechanic as well. He even fixed the clutch on my car as an added service. Super cool guy, well traveled and full of insightful stories. The best moving company by far.

They were really nice to work with, they are really fast as well. We got a few scratches on the furniture but we had a really difficult stairway up 3 flights. So I don’t hold that against them. I would use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
