Candice was excellent to work with. I had just bought a new home and was looking for help selecting furniture and coming up with an overall design. Candice drove to my home and spent at least two hours walking through the house, photographing and measuring everything. She asked me a lot of questions to get an idea of what I was looking for, and I'm sure I gave her some very vague responses because I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted... I just wanted the design to fit the overall character of the house and be kid friendly. She asked me what type of activities we enjoy as well as favorite colors, and was also very conscious of my budget. I felt very comfortable with her and asked her to start by doing the design for one room. One week later I got exactly what I asked for... A well designed, FUNCTIONAL family room for me and my kids that has a unique look to it and absolutely "pops!" She even figured out how to use some space under the atrium stairs for a cozy reading nook. I loved the pieces she chose and that she was able to provide 3D images from multiple angles so I could see exactly what the room would look like. This was the first time I have used an interior designer, and I am so glad I did. Rather than just buy some random stuff and stick it in a room, for the first time in my life I'm going to have a room that looks like it was well thought out and planned... everything from the furniture to accent pieces and artwork. It's beautiful, kid friendly and functional :-)

Brooke Costello of em.bel.lish transformed the main level of our home with comprehensive updates of the interior décor of the living room, foyer, dining room, family room, half bath and kitchen. Brooke looked out for our best interest with the various tradesmen on the project. She recommended a color palette coordinated to cabinets and granite that are permanent to the house. Brooke showed us many, many paint, wallpaper, fabric, carpet and furniture samples. She quickly understood our style preferences and was dedicated to pleasing us. She even gave us a picture of a TWA 747 from her own album to place on the family room bookshelves as a surprise for my husband. Our main floor now flows seamlessly from one room to the next while maintaining a definite identity for each space. Her work propduced a polished, classic interior design that perfectly blends existing family furniture and accessories sprinkled with a few new additions. Our twenty-something daughter gave the spontaneous compliment, "now everything looks so nice." From start to finish the project took 2 1/2 months to complete including the physical renovations, installation of the custom window treatments, pillows, etc., made-to-size area rugs, an original artwork and a special order sofa. It was completed as requested in time for a family dinner on Palm Sunday. Her professional creativity, resourcefulness and empathy for the budget have resulted in our high satisfaction. We've already talking about updating our three season room as Brooke's next interior design project for our home.

Jeannie helped me put together a logo, helped me design new business card. I was starting a new venture, this logo is important. In addition, I had a specific color in mind which she was very helpful in identifying. She is great to work with.

I can't say enough good things about my experience with Dottie Eaton of Design & Style. My home looks fabulous and really reflects my personal style. The minute I met Dottie I knew I had encountered a kindred spirit and a new friend. She really listened to me and understood that I wanted my home to be creative and unique space. She brought ideas to the project that I never would have thought of myself. The furnishings and accessories she helped me select are truly special. My home is one of a kind thanks to her special touch and attention to detail. I could not have found these items on my own and I am so grateful for her guidance and expertise. The furniture arrangements suit the rooms perfectly and the beautiful colors create a cohesive and original environment. I love how she was able to incorporate many of the things I already owned into the redesign. This was a super fun and rewarding experience. Every step along the way Dottie let me know that my satisfaction was her most important priority. I can't believe I ever considered doing this on my own. Dottie saved me a lot of time and ultimately a lot of money, because I am sure that without her help I would have made some unfortunate design blunders. Everyone who visits me just raves about my creative and welcoming home. Dottie is the best!

Andrea had great ideas for my small space. She has experience with healthcare design which was particularly important to me since my husband is in a wheelchair and a room layout needs to consider his mobility and needs. I will definitely use her services again.

I am a interior painter who does detail work. I am used to old houses with ceilings not perfect and walls bowing. I can make the lines look like they belong and Imperfections look like they don't exist. I love matching colors and adding the little detail that just makes a room pop.

I've traveled the world studying design and my diverse work is a result of my travels. I am able to gain inspiration from all aspects of life from culture, materials to manufacturing processes you name it. Having the ability to remove my personal interests from my work and satisfy my clients needs based upon their likes and dislikes is something others are quite often unable to do, however I do so very well.

About

My name is Pacha Bielicke, and I am an interior designer. I have experience in residential design. I am particularly drawn to the personal aspect that residential design offers. It is my philosophy that functionality should take precedence in design. Purposeful and thoughtful elements that create a space conducive to the needs and wants of the client should be the ultimate goal for any design project regardless of scale. Whether choosing a single piece to blend seamlessly into an existing design or starting with an empty room, I enjoy helping clients to make their vision into a reality.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
