I contracted Kristofer Thompson of Asheville Videography for my daughter's wedding at Claxton Farm, Weaverville, NC. The drone-aerial video of the farm and the venue was very beautiful & astonishing ! He did an excellent job for the whole event. He delivered all of my requests for different versions. He spent much time & efforts to achieve perfect videos in different formats. He's very professional, skillful, hard-working, diligent, perfectionist, polite and courteous. If I need a videographer for future events, I will not hesitate to hire him again. B. Go, Wauconda, IL

Issac Aaron Media did an exceptional job providing the videographer services for my wedding ceremony and reception. I posted the project on Thumbtack approximately 10 days before my wedding after the original videographer cancelled. Issac responded to my post immediately. After speaking with him, I was excited to learn about all that he could do for us and stay with in our budget. He used great features such as a 360 camera and microphone that was place on me(the groom) during our ceremony just to name a few. We had to make several changes to our wedding at the last minute, the biggest being moving the entire ceremony from outside to indoors due to the weather. Issac was able to accommodate and still capture all of the great moments of our special day. Issac also worked great with our photographers, wedding coordinator, family, friends, and venue staff. My wife and I sincerely thank Issac for his professionalism and great service. We would absolutely recommend Issac Aaron Media to our friends and family. Also, if we need videographer services in the future, he's got the job!

Where do I start.... Aimie was very prompt to return contact and zero in on what my needs were. In my case we were on a budget, time crunch, and needed some direction as to what would work out best for our location. Aimie and help came on time the day of our wedding even at the chance of bad weather, and captured memories that will last a lifetime

Jenny did a marvelous job at my son and daughter-in-law's wedding. During the event, the videographers were inconspicuous (which seems like a strange thing to say for people holding videocameras), but captured everything that happened. The final edited work -- and particularly the short (8 minute) video -- provide a perfect remembrance of the day as a whole. I was particularly impressed with the ability to capture their relationship perfectly through both the visuals and the artful use of audio, such as a voice-over of a part of their wedding vows to open the video and a shot of the groom's practiced movement to pull out his handkerchief to hand to his emotional bride -- and the laughter surrounding it. To put it plainly, I can't say enough about Jenny's ability to capture the day and what a pleasure she is to work with.

Brett has composed and produced brilliant soundtracks for my videography on several occasions. He has always been open and understanding of my vague descriptions of a desired track, and turned around and produced audio that perfectly fits with what I need for a video.

James is a fantastic photographer who is really focused on his clients. He has an eye for detail and helps to select non-traditional poses and locations. He is very quick to get photos back to you following a session, with all rights to digital images to print, share, or save included. I was impressed with his professionalism as well as the quality of his work, in relation to the (affordable) price that he charges. For James, it isn’t about the money but about the quality of work he does! I highly recommend contacting James for senior photos, wedding photos, engagement/bridal sesseions, as well as fun family photos. He can do it all with grace and humility! If you are in Asheville, I can promise he has the highest quality at the best price for professional photos!!

The main videographer Kwadwo did an amazing job. As the bride, I definitely didn't want to be worried about anything the day of and while there was typical wedding craziness going on he was a HUGE comfort! (When I was paying attention) he was exactly where he needed to be at all times. I didn't even realize he was filming half of what he did. So I was able to look back on his videos of moments I missed the day of. He's also a really nice guy, so that always helps. For the finished product, the footage and sound were of amazing quality and his "preview video" he made of the wedding was made up of really gorgeous and fun shots at the same time. He even provided us with I think 3 copies of our video (each DVD with our photo on it), 4 segments on the DVD and a pretty silver custom engraved Dvd case, also with our wedding photo on it. I was like "what!? Who does this?"... For no extra cost smh I only wish I had asked him to join us when the wedding party took pictures during the cocktail hour. He brings a second camera man so if you can help it, have them split up and get him to capture those cool moments when the bridal party is finally relaxed.

Kathi Barnhill, the pictures you took at our wedding are just beautiful. I love almost every single one of the photos individually, and, together, they bring back a real sense of the celebration--the love and support of our friends and family, our joy in marrying, and the vivid colors on that amazing summer day. You managed to catch powerful moment after moment, without me even seeing that you were taking photos. I'm very camera shy, so, a photographer I'm not aware of is a great thing! Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are truly gifted.

By far the best and most non-invasive film crew I've worked with on my wedding day (I'm a professional model and always have cameras around). The footage of the wedding came out like a hollywood film and they brought tears to the eyes of people I haven't even met before! These guys come highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
