We hired Stacy and her team to paint the interior of our new home! She did an amazing job working with my wife on paint colors. I really appreciated her team's dedication and precision on completing our project in only 3 days! You have helped to make our first house in North Carolina feel like a home. Stacy's team also stained our screened in porch. We are still working with Stacy on interior decorating of our home, can't wait to see what she has in store! I would highly recommend Stacy and her team for your next project! Thank you!

We hired Dan to install tile flooring in our kitchen. We are very satisfied with the finished product. He is hard working and a very nice gentleman. We would recommend him to help anyone with projects they would like to get done. His price was very reasonable for all the hard work he had to do.

I cannot say enough good things about the work Christy at Simply O Interiors did for us. We just moved into a new home. We thought we had all of these great ideas and brought them to our first meeting with her. She listened and gave us her opinions. Come to find out the couch we really wanted would not fit in our family room. Christy was very patient and helped us make decisions we can live with and our home is gorgeous!! Thank you Simply O Interiors for all you did. We have recommended you to all of our friends and family.

I have nothing but good things to say about Cole and Brittney at Carolina Chic. Over the years I have bought everything from delicious smelling candles, to a huge painted metal rooster. The variety of items they have is amazing! They think of everything when it comes to home decor and repurposing. It is very obvious that this is their passion, and they put their heart and soul into their work!

TEW did a fantastic job updating our mid-century modern style home! TEW blew me away by choosing the perfect paint colors, new hardwoods, various furniture, and redesigning the living room layout to fit our daily routine. TEW can take on any project and turn it into an amazing space! I would recommend TEW to anyone looking for a better daily life.

Phizzy is amazing! She's experienced, knowledgeable, and just such a great person. In the past I've dealt with real estate agents that just tried to "sell" me on homes that weren't meant for me, simply to make a sell. Phizzy was so patient and so knowledgeable, it was very easy to trust her with helping me find a new home. If you want to work with someone who is in this business because she loves helping people and has been doing so for over a decade, this is who you should go to! I will continue recommending her to any friends or family looking to buy or sell their home.

Ann was wonderful to work with. She dedicated hours of her time and energy to decorate two rooms in the Ronald McDonald House of Durham's expansion. Her designs are fresh, innovative and welcoming. I'd recommend her design skills highly and recommend her as a person even more so. She is a gem to work with!

I have been working with Barbara exclusively as the 'go to Stager' for my listings for many years. Barbara's professional skills are top notch from the initial visit to the actual staging. She is able to successfully present my listings with perfect staging - so much so that many sellers are in disbelief that it is their same home! Many sellers are very stressed about the staging process and Barbara is able to keep my client's stress at a minimum. I am especially grateful that she is so kind to my clients and they like her so much that it makes my job a lot easier. The final outcome from using her as a stager is that my listings sell quickly and for the highest price possible. Choose a stager that will save you time and aggravation as an agent and hire Barbara. She will deliver every time!

Molly McLean has designed/decorated 2 bedrooms for us, one for my 3 yo daughter and one for our 7 yo son. She is amazing! The end result was straight out of a magazine! She asked what colors we wanted to use and what the kids interests were, then she took it from there. She is very easy to work with and her designs were a perfect fit for our rooms. I would highly recommend Molly, she is the best around. We couldn't be happier with the rooms she did for us!

About

I provide services in home staging that are all centered around the home buying and selling experience. A home stager helps prepare your home for sale for the top dollar and show potential buyers how their things and life can look in your home. I have ten years of experience. I work with realtors and sellers. Please visit my website: edgehomestaging.com for more information. I work in Greensboro area, Raleigh area, and Wilmington. I absolutely am honored to help people move on to the next phase or stage of their lives by helping them prepare their homes for sale (staging to sell) or helping redesign their environment (staging to dwell) for the next step. As an extension of this work, I also assist i paint color selection, and next-stage living in place. Since 2003, I have worked as a stager part-time, and now have been able to devote full time to this work. I am very quick and thorough, working smoothly with realtors, contractor/flippers, and homeowners in residences with or without existing furnishings. Please let me know how I may serve you! In your case, if you could send me three photos of each room (stand in one place near entry door of that room and take a left view, center view and a right view from your one stance), I might be able to write up a consultation which would be a room-by-room to-do list for you to complete. That cost will be $250. If you want me to travel to your house, that fee would be $100 more. I’d love to do this project with you. I did one just like this situation in FL and the house sold in less than 2 weeks after lingering for 6 months on the market. In your case, I need to see the property for a quick walk-through, assess the buyer pool and their likes and dislikes/expectations, and then write a proposal. Do you want to rent furniture from me? Do you want me to buy furniture for your use in another home? We can get these questions answered quickly, I'm sure. Initial fee is $150 to come to the property. Then, if you choose me as your stager, this fee can be absorbed into my estimated price. Thank you! -Carol at EdgeHomeStaging.com.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
