Introduction: I've been teaching for the last 8 years, working with over 100 students in group rehearsals and private lessons. I have a Bachelor's of Music from UNC Chapel Hill in guitar performance and perform regularly in the area. I would highly recommend guitar lessons with Avery. Working with him has been fantastic, and I am finally learning guitar at the level I have wanted for a long time. Avery is a very easy going individual, and the lessons are always an enjoyable part of my week. He has an impressive command of music theory and various styles of music. I have been able to learn various rock and roll/blues songs with ease, but have grown to appreciate the theory behind the music, and as a result, have become a much better player. Not only all that, but Avery is also able to fluently communicate all of the complicated concepts into easy to understand pieces, making progress incredibly efficient compared to (attempting) self-teaching. I came into the lessons with a couple of specific goals. I wanted to learn how to play some specific songs, to learn how to improvise and solo over blues songs, and overall be able to play the acoustic guitar in an entertaining way. Avery has me making steady progress toward all of these after just a couple of lessons! Also, he is good at communicating and setting up virtual lessons. Whatever type of lessons you need, Avery is your man. Well worth the time and price.

Whether you haven't touched a guitar in your life, can strum a couple open chords, or equate yourself to John Mayer, there's no doubt that Avery is the tutor for you. I first picked up the guitar in March 2020 and after making minimal progress my first few months of playing, I contacted Avery in September after being recommended to him by a friend. After just my first lesson with Avery, I truly believe I improved in every facet of my playing. Now 5 months later, I can truthfully say I have become a much better and more confident guitar player as a result of Avery's lessons. Avery is incredibly knowledgeable in music theory and can answer any questions you have regarding scales, soloing, and all things guitar in general. Coming into the first lesson, I knew virtually nothing about the actual theory behind scales and chords, but after working with Avery, I became much more knowledgable in the music theory and gained a genuine curiosity to learn more of it. Luckily, Avery knows pretty much all there is about it, so anytime a random question comes up about the music theory behind something, he's there to answer it. Bottom line, if you're debating whether or not to take lessons with Avery, stop. You're wasting your time. Do it and don't look back. The only reason this review is ending is so I can get back to my guitar and practice the things he taught me.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First I will gauge the skill level and interest in my student, and then will come up with fun exciting exercises and songs to get them to play at the level that they want! I like to teach playing songs and riffs right out of the gate, and then explain the theory of why things work how they do.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelors of Music from UNC Chapel Hill in Guitar performance. Drumline and Jazz band in High school. Teaching experience for 8 years.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started teaching you younger kids when I was in high school, and really loved it and continued to teach ever since!
