Great job by John! Very nice, knew exactly what I needed done. He raised my outdoor spigot so I can now easily hook up hose for garden projects in my front yard. Highly recommend!

Kevin McKoy is OUTSTANDING. He is fair and honest. His forte is lawn care, however, he has a wide resource of networks to extend his services for his customers. I initially contacted McKoy's Lawn Care & Maintenance to give a quote on a fence/gate project. The fence/gate projected expanded to front lawn repair, french drain and flower bed installation. Then he did a full back yard makeover: rock path, lawn, tree & plant installation, flower bed preparation, connecting gutter pipes to drain properly, and large flower/garden beds. In addition, when there was a slight tweak (correction), he was accommodating and ensured that the fix was completed satisfactorily. I would recommend Kevin McKoy.

I used Gene last year to begin landscaping my front yard in my new home. He did a great job and I am having him complete the front garden bed this week. I would highly recommend him for any landscaping needs.

He really did a great job and was able to do the work soon after quoting. Rob was friendly, knowledgeable, and communicated very well. The only reason I gave a 4/5 is the price. First let me say that my backyard was a mess. I have poison ivy, vines, overgrown trees and much more. However, it’s only a small portion of my back yard and I was quoted $775. That’s about $90/hour for the amount of time he was there. I’m by no means trying to discourage anyone from using Rob, he did a great job, but $90/hour may be quite steep for lawn work....that’s almost 3 times what I make with an engineering degree. In the end he knocked off $200 because I said I would do bagging up of the sticks and leaves. It only took me 1.5 hours to do...It doesn’t make sense to pay someone $100/hr to gather up sticks and put them on the curb.

Was so impressed with the professionalism at first. Received a lovely email confirming my appointment. Unfortunately, none of the correspondence gave me a time that they would be showing up. When I tried to call in, I was transferred into queues where I sat on hold forever, with nobody picking up. Sent emails and messages with no responses. Spent 20 minutes and finally got a person, who told me that was the way that it was, and basically hung up on me (transferring me back into another hold queue). After waiting AGAIN, spoke to someone who could look at the scheduling, and he informed me that they didn't have a time-frame. It would just be between 9:00 and 6:00 PM...sometime. They can't provide me a specific time?? That seems a bit crazy. The cable company even gives you a four hour window! I have cancelled the service. So I don't know how good they would be with the services. If their lawn services are anything like their customer services, I'm pretty sure I'd be sorely disappointed.

Spencer was a true pleasure to work with. He brought great ideas to the table and helped me look at my landscaping project from a completely and enlightening angle. He was very knowledge about the plants in my garden and extremely open to feedback on slight changes I wanted to make to the plan. He provided me with a detailed and fair price. As a result of the work that he has done at my home to help get it sold, I have recommended him to three of my friends for similar projects.

Ryan has completed many different projects for me. Remodeled a bathroom, tore off my old deck and built a new one, repaired drywall, painted the interior of my house, powerwashed and painted the exterior of my house, built a garden, as well as building a rock patio and fire pit. Ryan has always been professional and courteous. He is always on time, and works as long as it takes to get the job done. He does an excellent job, and keeps things moving so they get done quickly. I have been nothing but satisfied with the jobs that he has done, and will continue to use him in the future.

Knowledgeable, practical, and eco-minded - that is what I love about Betty Houston and her landscaping/gardening services. She has years of training and knowledge so she is a virtual encyclopedia of plants, plant diseases and cures. She has a "keep-it-simple" plan - so the landscape/garden is easy to maintain. And Betty LOVES keeping the earth safe from the overuse of chemicals. Betty helped us years ago with a solution to stop rain water from washing away an embankment. Last year she diagnosed and treated a fungus on our azaleas. This year she helped us design a unique raised bed garden for our pier on Lake Norman. How innovative! I highly recommend Betty for your landscaping and garden needs.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.
