Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to repair a deck?

The average cost to repair a deck is $2,075, but keep in mind the prices professionals in your area charge could differ. For example, prices often depend on the material (cedar, composite, PVC, pressure-treated, hardwood deck materials, etc.) that is used. The extent of damage also affects the price, with severe mildew damage requiring pressure washing and restaining. Other factors include the need for site grading or elevation, stair or railing repair, and termite damage repair or replacement.

Always get cost estimates from several deck repair services to find out exactly how much your repairs should cost.

What is the life expectancy of a wood deck?

A wood deck is likely to last between 10 and 15 years. However, some decking companies say a wooden deck’s lifespan may last several decades. This life expectancy assumes that there will be regular maintenance and sealing. It also assumes that the deck has been built with high-quality and appropriate woods, such as cedar, pressure-treated or rugged hardwoods. Proper design and drainage combined with regular cleaning and maintenance can make a deck last longer.

Should I repair or replace my deck?

The signs that your deck needs repair may include warped or soft decking boards, wobbly or loose railings, or rot. However, it’s worth considering your deck’s age before deciding between repair and replacement. Decks older than 10 years are candidates for replacement, particularly if they’re made of wood instead of composite or PVC. If the foundation is affected, or if the deck seems to have an overall need for extensive repair rather than just an isolated area, consider replacing it.

Of course, you can always consult with deck professionals if you need help determining if you should repair or replace your deck. Ask to receive cost estimates for both the needed repairs and replacement before making a decision.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

First time we hired David and his team was for basic repair of a trim from deck entryway that was rotting away. They showed up as promised and completed the repair while answering any questions I had in great detail with friendly manner. We hired 123 Renovate LLC again for reinforcing the stair stringers to the deck with joist hangers and David showed up and completed the work as promised. We're considering David and 123 Renovate LLC for renovating our deck (converting half of the deck to a screened deck). Highly recommend them!

This was without a doubt one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor. I had work done to remove a large fallen tree branch and repair of the fence that it crashed through, as well as deck repair including replacing a rotting deck post. Jaime got back to me almost immediately after my thumbtack request, came out the next day for an estimate, and completed all the work a few days after that. He was very easy to work with and he even fixed a few other things I noticed while he was there working. I would highly recommend him for your job.

The guys did a great job repairing a deck, and discovered some problems I hadn't, without charging me an arm and a leg more to fix it. It was greatly appreciated. I could not be there for the job, so he kept me updated with pictures. I also appreciate their being willing to take a relatively small job, as it is hard to find people who will do that.

Todd was hired for deck repair, power washing and staining. He was extremely peompt to respond to my thumbtack post and to my subsequent texts abiut the job,, etc. He did an EXCELLENT JOB on our deck. It looks brand new! But to show how great of a person he is as well as a handyman...He was at our house working on our deck at the same tome we we were having hardwoods installed. When the old flooringy was removed we found a hole in one floorboard from a leaky door and damage to others. He volunteered on the spot to fix it at that moment and literally saved the day. He even came out On Easter to finish and did another EXCELLENT JOB! I cannot say enough good things about him! I would highly recommend him! Thanks Todd for everything!
