Dean did an amazing kitchen tile job for us, as well as some exterior siding repair and miscellaneous jobs on a rental property we own. He was extremely patient in working with us and the tenants to decide on a solution. I was very impressed that he went out of his way to drive to multiple stores to find tile that might work. He was very accessible and informative, and was very reasonably priced. I'd definitely recommend Dean as a handyman.

Our landscape committee believes the owner of this company understood our needs best. He came on site and created a design that we thought would work well. The work is planned for this Thursday, weather permitting.

In early May I had a pipe burst in my kitchen. I quickly saw there was significant damage. Through a friend I was introduced to Bobbie Jones. He came in accessed the damage and helped me file with my insurance and began a large clean up job. Bobbie sucessfully removed mildewed sections of walls that the water damage recovery missed; then put the sections of the walls back so seamlessly that you can't tell where a repair was done. He continued to do the same quality work as he replaced all my floors down stairs (living room & kitchen in vynl wood, kitchen in tile). He continued to do a high quality job replacing my front and back doors, vent covers, and even a few eletrical socket or covers. Bobbie always acted professionally, provided a work schedule, and was prompt. Bobbie explained each step to me in a way I could understand, and took the extra time to make sure I understood what potential unexpexted difficulty we might encounter. Over all Bobbie not only did a high quality work, but you could tell he took pride in his work and enjoyed what he did. It's rare to find this level of quality, professionalism, and personabness in our curent culture. I was very blessed to have Bobbie work on my house.

Jeremy was the best HANDYMAN ever. There is nothing he cant do, do it well, quickly. I had two (2) 8x10 sheets of things to do for me, from moving electrical wires, installing undercounter kitchen lights, installing cabinet doors' and drawers' hardware that had none previously, holding up heavy mattress so I could put bed skirt on, installing storage cabinets, shelves, in my garage...and more and more.. He always goes one step further to make sure the client is happy. We moved my "office/craft" room around..his idea..and then fixed the mangle of wires left behind by the cable/phone/internet worker. The room now feels spacious and extremely more useable. When I need something done, you can bet Mr. Jeremy Ashley will be my first call. Barbara Smith, Greensboro, NC

I retained Suzanne to design a luxe master bedroom, a sunroom and living room in my 3800 sq. ft. home at Lake Norman. She honed right in on my personality & tastes, integrating my eclectic, modern style & specific personal needs, actually exceededing my expectations ! Her natural gift for color, selecting unusual textiles and balance is amazing and will not disappoint. I am a stickler for details and good communication. Suzanne personally oversaw the project to delivery and within budget. She even designed a statement piece using my late father's European watch collection which is unique. She is not afraid to rake risks but not at a client's expense. I love the outcome, have gotten many compliments and highly recommend Suzanne Starnes Designworks.

3D Remodeling did an outstanding job on the repairs at my home. I had accumulated a list of Things to Do and I needed assistance. The list included repairs to a double wooden gate that was a small project on its own, replacing boards and installing new hinges. They also replaced a new kitchen light, replaced the wall lights outside the garage and on the front porch. In just a few hours they had completed my list of things that I had wanted done for months. I am very happy with the work and would recommend 3D Remodeling to anyone who needs a project completed and wants a dependable, professional job done. 3D Remodeling will be the first call I make for any home repair projects. We had a great experience with Jordan from Carolina Building Pros! He’s bright, punctual, professional, tidy, respectful, knowledgeable, easy to communicate with, is great at what he does, and has a great eye for detail. As an interior designer myself who’s worked with many contractors in the past, a good eye for detail is hard to come by, and Jordan has got it! He renovated a few attic spaces into a fun playroom for our son, a storage space for media players, and a place to mount our TV. We are so happy with his work and would recommend/hire him again in a heartbeat!

The designer is very easy to work with and emphasizes using pieces of furniture already in the home. Our redesign project is just beginning, but I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. I highly recommend this company.

I had the pleasure of working with Kimberly as the Design Manager for a home builder in the Raleigh area. She is poised, professional and has a keen eye for design. She is not afraid to be unique and bold in her approach. I am excited to see what the future holds for her and Vibrant Studios and wish her much success. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

TEW Design Studio helped me bring my kitchen back to life. We bought a beautiful house built int he 70's and wanted to keep the feel of the original design but add our own personality to it. Rima and her team were able to work with our budget and guide us with making the right selections. The services provided were amazing and made the stress of this process so much easier knowing that we were amazing and made the stress of this process so much easier knowing that we have a team that has our back. I highly recommend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
