I had the opportunity to meet Justin through Thumbtack. He worked on my porch railings after winning the bid for the job. He was fair and reasonable in his pricing. As far as the work done, it appeared to be excellent craftsmanship. Justin is very professional and a skilled carpenter. I would definitely give him an opportunity to bid on another job first and pray to God its workable so he can work his magic once again! As the weather improves over the next few weeks, he will return to put the final touches on some quality work. Thank you Justin! First class job!!!!!

The Mr Fix It team did a great job on repairing our roof & damaged soffit. Chris explained what they would do when he came out for the estimate and when they returned to work ... that's exactly what they did. They were punctual, diligent, and courteous. When they found issues - they showed them to us; using technology to video the activity (as was the case with our carpenter ants). When they left, there was no sign that work had been done here - everything was clean as a whistle. I highly recommend he and his team to assist anyone and I plan on using them again.

HI! I am writing in support of Ground Up Construction. About 8 months ago my father, who is 94, and a retired carpenter, had an incident with a raccoon. The raccoon ate through the floor of his laundry room looking for a place to stay for the winter. This did an incredible amount of damage. I placed a call for bid on Thumbtack and got an immediate response from Ryan Todd at Ground Up Construction. They came up and took a look at the damage and gave a detailed bid. They were by far the most professional of the company's that spoke to us about the job and gave the most complete materials list and labor expenses. They spoke to my father about what they thought would need to be done and discussed with him what problems they might encounter. As my father put it, "they are going to do what I would do, if I could have done the work." Two weeks later they were on the job. The job was done quickly and finished on budget. These men are all thoroughly competent professionals with plenty of experience. I highly recommend them for any carpentry that you might need. Mike Lopp 336-784-8760

As a Project Mgr of a local building company and someone who has been involved around residential construction for over 20 years, I am often asked for good referrals. When it comes to interior trim, I have many people that I could refer, but I always refer Trim Time as the first option. Unlike many "trim carpenters" that I have come across over the years, Bill does not have to rely on painters to make his work look good. His work always looks the same whether it's a project that requires stain or paint. In addition to superior craftsmanship, Bill has the ability to design for the customer or simply reproduce something that a customer may have seen in a picture of photograph. Simply put...I highly recommend Trim Time.

Daniel Wagner is a true professional and his skilled workers are hard working and very efficient. The only thing that was better then the roof was the price which was exactly to the quote and finished on time. The neighbors are also impressed with the quality. On Target Construction is highly recommended!!

We first met JC and Robinson Construction when they performed major repairs after a tree limb crashed through our roof. They did an excellent job with the roof repair including replacing 8 sheets of plywood, interior drywall ceiling and wall replacement, and additional repairs to a rotted sun room roof and exterior over sized sun room window and supporting structure. Robinson Construction also replaced two sun room sunlights. All work was top notch and completed on time. JC's star performer is his lead carpenter Freddie who is clearly an outstanding craftsman and the key to JC and Robinson's success. We were so impressed with this experience that we then paid a reasonable premium to have JC and crew repaint the home and effect other needed repairs, and install two new doors. The end product was equally impressive but the work dragged on for well over a month, partly due to weather but also due to other job conflicts. The length of time it took became aggravating and detracted from an otherwise positive outcome. Still I would highly recommend JC and Robinson Construction, just make sure you have a strong understanding regarding the timeline for completion.

Kenneth Ridge has done work for us several times over the years. He added a two car garage to our house and built it to our specifications. Everything was done in a timely manor and he was very professional. He also redone both of our bathrooms. One bath had to have the shower built from scratch and Kenneth did a very nice job of it. The large bath had to have a window replaced and he came up with the idea of a shelf where the window was because it was going into the garage that had been built. Over all Kenneth Ridge is a very good carpenter, plumber and a jack of all trades. He does very good work and we have not a complaint with any thing that was done. he does very outstanding work. He can build anything.

Russ called within 15 minutes of my post. I had waited the previous day for a contractor that did not show much less call. Russ' s carpenter came the next day on a Sunday morning and completed the job in a professional, timely manner.

I would highly recommend Jorge to anyone who needs to hire an experienced carpenter for any interior or exterior job. He performs all work with high quality and workmanship skills needed to complete all tasks on time. Personally, I hired Jorge to replace two sets of patio doors including a large amount of siding and foundation repair. He did an excellent job and his personal interest and pride in his work really impressed me. Please call me if you would like more information anytime. Mike 336-687-5066

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

        Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

        How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
