Always hard to get contractors to make a long drive for a small project, but John communicated, showed up when he said he would and got the job done.

They did a wonderful job on my jungle of a yard. They worked quickly and were able to get the whole yard cleanup done in one day. I have hired them to continue doing my regular lawn maintenance because they were such a pleasure to work with for this project.

After reading all the positive reviews I felt confident I had found the right person to tackle my home repair needs; and I was not wrong. Jeremy was punctual, knowledgeable, courteous and accomplished. He conferred with me on various options to make repairs in unusual situations, came up with novel suggestions, some of which worked, and some of which didn't, but not until after he had tried (electrical issues created by another contractor). So all in all I was very satisfied with he and his colleague's work ethic, work product and expertise. They cleaned up after themselves and were very well priced, in my opinion. I will definitely hire A Squared again.

Overall, I thought he was a solid worker and while it is hard to gauge if I got the highest quality of work, I feel like the work done was reasonable. They did work within my budget for several small projects, and while they didn't adhere to the original schedule, they did get the pieces done. The general replacement of the mortar around bricks looks ok on the front of the house, and the relaying of the walkway was done well. They built up a first new step (because one was missing or never built. It was done with a concrete and brick dye. He was convinced that will eventually 'blend in' so I am waiting to see that happen in the coming months. The back brick patio replacement bricks was a little less consistent, and people have noticed that the mortar around the bricks is right now a little sloppy - though, again, I am affirmed by the contractor this will improve over time. He did say it might take a while. I had two other small projects that he did take on - one was washing and repairing a second entryway's brickwork and that mortar has already broken away and I believe I will have to redo this in the coming week. The other was a small brick extension to the back brickway that was almost forgotten. The job was supposed to take 1-2 days, and it sprawled out to two weeks for various reasons. I also paid them in installments on a daily basis, which is fine but highly unusual. So that is something to prepare for.

We recently built a new deck and needed some landscaping under and around it. It's a very high deck, so there's lots of space underneath. We also needed a walkway from an existing walk near the house to the bottom of the deck steps. Rick came out and met with us, then came back and took photos of the area and sent us a proposal with before and after pictures, including the plants that he would install and a detailed price list. His pricing was very fair and he was able to begin the work immediately. It only took 3 days and we are so pleased with the results! We consider this to be "Phase I" of landscaping our backyard and look forward to working with Rick again on further phases of improving our space! The only thing I still need from him are written instructions on how to fertilize and care for the new plants, and then we'll be square :-) !!! Very good experience overall!!

Braden is awesome! He is professional, creative, and very skilled at what he does. He has completed 2 major landscaping projects for—-one involved redesigning and rebuilding our front porch. We have been pleased with the quality of his work and the respect he always shows for our ideas and our budget...best of all he is a kind and decent human being, and we are happy to have gotten to know him.

Excellent job! I am so glad I hired Andrew for replacing my floors. He also does just about anything else you might need and he does it well. Door replacement, drywall, painting, and etc. I have recommended Andrew to my realtor and other family and friends. One of the things that I greatly appreciated was that he was the only contractor that CLEANED UP after himself! Huge in my book. He also would take on any other job that I would come up with. Highly recommend to higher Andrew Key for pretty much anything. I would higher him again without a doubt. Thanks for your help Andrew. Great job!

M & S Home Builders are fantastic. Matthew was so professional ad and reliable from Day!. His estimate and drawings were so detailed and came back to me faster than any of the other few that gave me estimates. He works hard at projects and knows how to take care of the details. He respects the yard and keeps the site neat. Can't wait until the screen porch is finished.

Had an issue with an old pipe and the first group made an error. The company was quick to resolve the issue and make sure it was done correctly. They apologized and did a thorough job that I was thrilled with in the end!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
