Bruce is an excellent worker. He did not have an exact match of paint for the repair. The color he had was only a slight shade off, so he went the extra mile and painted the other panel to match (without any extra charge). I am extremely pleased with his professionalism.

We recently moved and needed to buy some new furniture, place pictures on the wall, and do general decorating throughout the house. I have furniture we bought in Singapore and Hong Kong that I wanted to blend with the new furniture. Jenny was very helpful with picking out new furniture to go with our existing. She has a great eye for color and placement. She helped place pictures on the wall and met me and my husband at the furniture stores several times til we got the right stuff...we tend to disagree and so it was great to have another opinion. She is super friendly and great to work with! I will definitely use Jenny in the future and highly recommend her services. Thanks Jenny!

We used Zachary in a remodeling project of our kitchen, family room, sunroom, and half bath. His professional manner in which he helped us choose color, texture, design, and functional products was so necessary for our project. Zach listened to us, paid attention to our style, but pushed beyond our comfort zone just a bit to keep us from being "stuck" and we are so grateful. He went to the trouble of offering numerous designs in numerous price ranges, which we appreciate. I would recommend Zach and would absolutely use him again.

I hired Jimmie for a paint palette consultation. She was a tremendous help in working with me to choose a color palette that will flow throughout the house. She eased my anxiety and helped me choose colors that I believe will create a warm and welcoming environment in my home. Once the painting project is complete, I will post photos. In the meantime, I've hired her to help me with some interior design work. I will post another review when we complete that project.

I hired Taylor to help me decorate my new home. I had tried online design services and found that it still required a lot of leg work from me. Taylor was awesome! She came to my home for a consultation and really listened to my personal style. She then provided me with design boards to showcase the ideas she came up with. She ordered everything and then installed it on our scheduled install day. Everything looks perfect! I get compliments on my home decor all the time now. Even from delivery guys lol. I highly recommend Cottonwood Interior Designs.

Kirsten from Designing Women saved my marriage! Well, maybe not literally, but my husband and I have very different tastes and were dreading furniture shopping together. We decided to work with Designing Women for our trips to Hickory Furniture Mart and we agree it was the best decision we could have made! Kirsten steered us through the process of picking furniture that we absolutely love (BOTH of us)! She gave excellent design advice, helped us pick a color scheme, fabrics and rugs. We will definitely be back to Hickory to purchase more furniture in the future, and we'll definitely be working with Designing Women again. I can't recommend them highly enough!!

Sue helped me change the entire look and feel of my house (excluding the kitchen which I had redone 6 months earlier). I told her I wanted to move to a single wall color throughout the house and replace the carpet in the only room that had carpet - the den). She was extremely patient and accommodating with showing me many different paint colors and carpet samples with no pressure to decide on any one style or color but giving the right amount of direction. Once we selected the paint colors and carpet, she coordinated everything with both the painter and the carpet installers. She coordinated with movers to relocate furniture, electricians to handle installation of ceiling fans and light fixtures and furniture companies in placing orders and delivery for new furniture and lighting. Sue ordered pictures for the walls, assisted in selecting framing and helped hanging existing and new pictures throughout the house. Sue was always cordial, polite and upbeat, responded to email and phone messages promptly and met me at the house for necessary consultations. Sue made the redesign process as painless as possible and it was a pleasure to work with her.

I chose Seasons Home Staging over others because Sandy Miller provide a clear, concise plan for staging my home. She sent an email with pictures of her design plans with pieces that she would use and color schemes. She came to my home and went from room to room coming up with the staging plan. She was able to stage the home with great success and all reviews from buyers were outstanding. I would definitely recommend her!

My name is Shevon Carr and I had the misfortune to have my home burn to such an extent that most of the furniture had to be replaced. The bright spot in this was that Ms. Gwen was available to help me create a beautiful home from the ashes. She has an eye for details, color enhancement and pulling together pieces that are unique and timeless. She has patience and takes the time to listen to the client's wishes. She has a way of getting you to trust her instincts in providing a home for you that is your oasis. I recommend her services highly.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE working with Jane of The Collected Interior!! Upon our initial meeting, I told Jane I was working within a budget, but still wanted something that looked high quality and boy did she deliver! Jane decorated my downstairs living space which includes a living area and small dinette area and my space looks fantastic - better than I could have ever imagined. Jane is super easy to work with, very professional, and friendly. I feel like what I paid for Jane's services is more than fair, especially considering that I was sometimes a difficult client. I will say this - if you are decorating within a budget, Jane is definitely the decorator to work with! Keep in mind that sourcing budget friendly home décor can be a timely process, so be patient and have realistic expectations regarding completion of your project. Jane is so fantastic, I've hired her to decorate my home office and have plans to hire her to decorate my bedroom so when all is said and done, she will pretty much have decorated my entire house and I'm definitely glad I made this investment in my home!

Cheryl designed and implemented the transformation of a middle school foyer for our church. She utilized the space to create a welcoming environment for our guests. This consisted of fabric design, brand assembly, space utilization, material selections, decor placement, color coordination, and prop construction. She is amazing at what she does and has been a huge addition to our Creative Design Team.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
