My mother (68) live in NC and I reside in Philadelphia and was looking for someone to handle all of her home improvement needs (roof, deck, new flooring, kitchen vent hood, lighting, gutters, facial boards and exterior paint). As most will know it's hard to find a good contractor who is considerate, respectful and all around take pride in their work. Scott was outstanding at this level of communication, patience, and outstanding work he completed on all of the jobs above. I could not be happier with how we communicated remotely to get the tasks completed and it felt he was an extension of the family with the assistance he was able to provide on our projects. I am looking forward to working with Scott on our bathroom and kitchen projects.

Donald painted my entire house, painted the outside door and shutters and pressure washed my entire house, deck and patio. Donald is very professional and did a very good job and was very resonable in price. It took Donald 4 days to completly finish the house. What impressed me about Donald was the quality of work and he was on time. Supervising his worker and making sure they did what needed to be done so he didn't have to go back and finish the work they should have completed. I've seen more expensive painters with the same problem and these things do happen. Overall, I was impressed with his work, the realtor who is selling my house was very impressed and she has his number for future projects. I will hire him again soon for another project because he does a very good job and fair in his price.

Kurt is Awesome!! Kurt has done multiple projects for us, flooring, windows, trim, hang doors, build Shed, decking, retaining wall, & currently have him scheduled for 3 more projects. He goes the extra mile for the customer and always is there when he says he is gonna be there, you can count on him 100%. We bought a home that needed a lot of work and had many headaches with contractors showing up on time but Kurt was always the guy I could count on. I no longer have the headache of looking for contractors as Kurt is my go to guy. He is always honest on what the supplies for the job will take and charges unbeatable prices with A1 quality work. Kurt is polite and fun to be around and always cleans up his job site. If your looking for a guy that does good work & can trust, then Kurt is the guy.

Mr.Timm is an absolute joy to work with. He has a very gentle way about him. He came to my home on the 18 to give me an estimate on pressure washing the outside, I just knew it was going to cost at least $225 like last year, but my mouth dropped when he said simply $80 for my single story home next thing you know I end up getting him to do: 1. Pressure wash my home 2. Acid wash my drive way 3. Pressure wash my deck 4. Pressure wash my Fence 5. Stain my deck and fence 6. Clean all the carpets in the hose 8 rooms And the carpet look absolutely amazing and my home smell great. He did everything above and beyond and save me at least 1300 from estimates I receive from these other guys out here. You want the job done right and save money I will recommend P&T any day of the week. -Lizzy and James Bowman

Argabright & Son Construction built me a new porch roof over my front door and it looks awesome. They also built me a covered area for my grill area in my back yard. I love them both!! I would highly recommend this company for any of your additions to your home. All of my friends and family have said how great it looks. The job was completed in a timely manner and I just can not say enough about how great it looks. This company exceeded my expectations!

Robert has done two different jobs for me. A remodel of a bathroom and during this remodel he also took on several other jobs for me in repairing some floors in the same house. I also added to the contract that we wanted him to do the painting of the bathroom. I was very pleased in that the job came at the price that he quoted. He was very knowledgeable in how to do the job. we did have a problem with the plumber. But Robert handle this and brought in a different plumber that handled the job. I also had a job with a second house where the front porch over the front door had rotted and was falling in. On this job, Robert accomplish all the tasks that I asked him to and also keep this job within the budget. I have worked in residential construction as electrician for over 18 years, and believe me when you work in older houses. There's always going to be something unforeseen problems, and we did have some unforeseen problems but I was most happy about the fact that Robert handle them all and keep thing within budget. I hope that this reference will be of assistance to you in making your final decision as to hiring Robert to do your work. R/S Reggie

Jim Desmond has done several projects for me and his work is high quality with much attention to detail. He and his crew remodeled a kitchen in one of my rental properties. The work was professional and on time. I will definitely use him again. They also did exterior wall replacement, a utility building, and screened in a porch. I would highly recommend him. We contracted with Oscar and RCC to build our Ramada (Cabled Roof Pergola). They were very professional and highly skilled craftsmen. We made several changes on the fly and Oscar was patient and receptive to our adjustments and was able to sucessfully execute the corrections. They completed the work in a timely manner and at a very affordable price. We are very satisfied and would definitely use them again.

I had "Adventures in Home Repair" (Amanda and Curtis) build a deck in my backyard. I thought going into it, that this would be a relatively quick process. Well, thoughts can be deceiving. However, Amanda and Curtis took care of EVERYTHING. I did not know about all the permits that were required when you have a septic tank in your backyard. There were many loopholes that had to be completed before the deck was even started. Through every loophole they had to complete and jump through, I was never left in the "dark." I knew everything that was going on at all times b/c of the excellent communication. I received an email almost every day from Amanda, explaining what was going on and the time constraints with the county and septic and health department. After all the loopholes the deck is amazing. It is exactly what I had imagined in my head for it to look like. I can't thank them enough for the attention to all the details (and there were a lot of details). They took everything in stride, and I really can't thank them enough. My deck is perfect, safe for my kids, and a great addition to my backyard. I will be calling them next year, when I decide on the next backyard project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
