Lena came to our house to help us with training our puppy. She was here for over 2 hours and she gave us a lot of very useful information. She was extremely patient with both of our children and our puppy. The information that she gave us was extremely relevant to what we wanted to know and when she left, we definitely felt like we had all the tools we needed to train our dog. She was very nice, prompt and I would recommend her services to anyone looking for a private dog trainer. I've actually already given her name to two of my friends who need help with their dogs.

Kevin was a wonderful trainer from the beginning! My dog was usually fearful and stressed but took to Kevin within their first meeting. By the end of the week he was walking on the leash beyond our expectations. He was finally not scared to go into public, we even took him to Birkdale the next week! The best part is that Cooper was so excited every time he saw Kevin so we knew he was not only learning but loved the training.

I have worked with Holland K9 services for 3.5 years and I would whole heartedly recommend him to anyone. When we adopted our dog Buddy, he was so high energy that we had to let him run off leash to burn that energy off and be a happy dog. However he was completely unresponsive to commands off leash, and would charge (friendly and excited, but still) any dog or person he spotted. After a bad experience with another dog training group, we found John. He helped us to transition to using an E-collar (shock collar) in order to enforce off-leash commands. I was initially nervous about that type of training due to our prior experience but with John it went great. Buddy was never fearful like he was with the other trainers. Our dog became wonderful and basically 100% reliable off-leash, and all of us were so much happier. We hired him again when we got our second dog, and he helped us train her as well as brush up Buddy on his skills again. Training with him is definitely worth every cent.

Jarod came to our home and gave a FREE (through & unhurried) evaluation of our two dogs. He answered all of my questions, gave us tips, advice, and even brought along one of his dogs to show us what ours would be learning. He is 100% the most genuine, caring, passionate dog trainer I have met and I recommend his services to anyone looking to their dog trained, behavior modifications, boarded, etc. He gained the trust and respect of my very abused, anxious Pitbull, and my stubborn German Shepherd!

About 7 years ago, we hired Fran to train our Chow puppy, who was out of control. I saw an article she had written in a magazine and was intrigued by her writings. In 2 weeks he was learning all the commands she taught US! I learned so much from her on dog behavior I suggested she have her own TV show, because she truly is better than Ceaser Milan and Victoria Stillwell. Fran doesn't use harsh training methods, she trains by the "reward method", and she LOVES her clients, she is professional, fun, and has more knowledge about training than anyone I have ever worked with! I recently rescued another Chow (named CUJO) that was his name from his previous owners and he is about 8 years old from the shelter I volunteer at and he was apparently abused and conditioned to a home with fighting, and Fran has worked with him and me to desensitize him to banging, knocking, any noise that would signify he was in an abusive environment. He also had a very negative reaction to people touching each , hugging, I had to be very careful when I got him home. He was undernourished and sick.....but now he's coming along wonderfully. HE LOVES HER and so do I. She helped me with a new diet for him for the health issues he was having. She is knowledgeable in every aspect of dog training, agression, agility, puppies, Good Canine Citizens, companion dogs and I recommend her highly. She goes out of her way to do her very best for you and your dog. She just isn't your typical "dog trainer" she absolutely loves what she does and puts 200% into her work ! I highly recommend Fran. !

After almost 4 months of trying to deal with our Golden Retriever puppy not listening to us, jumping up onto the couches, surfing the counters, wandering upstairs and chewing on everything, we finally decided it was time to find a professional to work with him. We received Paul's number from our vet, and boy are we glad we did! Paul has been nothing short of amazing! He came to our house every morning for 4 weeks straight to train our puppy and work with him one-on-one. Toward the end of training, Paul even took him to the park and hardware store many days to allow for distractions. He showed my husband and I exactly the kind of training he was doing with our dog and let us know exactly what we needed to do in order to keep our dog in tip-top shape for the rest of our lives. It was incredible to see the transformation of our puppy over those 4 weeks. He now knows the commands- heel, sit, down, sitting at entryways, place, off and free. Also, his behavior has improved significantly. We couldn't be happier with our decision to use Paul. His professionalism, dedication, positive attitude and excellence in dog training certainly make him what he is- "The Dog Professor!" And the best part is there is a lifetime guarantee- if our puppy regresses in any way, we just call Paul up and he will be back to train him! If you are looking for that right person to change both your's and your dog's life for the best, please do yourself a favor and call Paul! This is one decision you will not regret! Thank you, Paul, for everything you have done to make our lives so much easier and happier with our pup!

I needed some last minute important training for my Dog Maverick. He is overall a great dog, but there were some key things missing in his behavior. Alpha-moves dog training was not only responsive, punctual, and honest, but I saw amazing results in the first hour of training. It works and is definitely worth your time!!!

Blair is an amazing trainer! We have experience with her training our dog Jetta in classes (agility, rally obedience, general obedience) as well as private training in our home for resource guarding and walking on leash with neighborhood distractions. While Jetta is not a perfect dog, we certainly gained many valuable tools from Blair to help Jetta be the best dog she can be. Blair is excellent at finding different ways to help clients understand her comprehensive knowledge of dog behavior. We consider Blair's training to be a "gold standard," and would recommend her without hesitation.

We had a great experience. It was very apparent our 6 month-old little beagle did too. He came home so happy. He had learned many things needed to become a good family pet. Now, if we, the humans, can follow our instructions to keep reinforcing the learning. You know, it's hard to teach an old dog (human) new tricks. Heather was great with Shylo and we would recommend her to anyone looking for super dog training.

We had a great overall experience with Glenn as he trained our dog and us. :) Glenn was patient, well-informed and friendly. He answered all of our follow-up questions throroughly and made sure we felt comfortable throughout the training process. The one caveat I would suggest is to establish a communication plan upfront with him. Once we addressed that email was his preferred channel, things went more smoothly. We would recommend Glenn and his family to anyone looking for an educated dog trainer!

My dog was banned from PetSmart grooming after trying numerous groomers and dog trainer, Will Carmack was the only dog groomer and trainer that she would allow to cut her hair. Will provides a loving environment and has an uncanny ability to cut her hair while keeping her calm the entire time!!!

Liz (and Meritt) did an awesome job of training Spartacus - our cockapoo - and us! What they do at CCT is everything a dog owner would want - they truly love what they do and it shows in how they help dogs be such great family members and how Spartacus loves going there for socializing and training with other dogs. I could not imagine having a dog without them.

Melissa did a great job with my very large dog. He had trouble on a leash meeting new people and dogs, and she had the proper tools available and was able work those issues at her location. Because he is so large it was so important to be able to control him and she helped show me how, so that he is a joy to walk now (where he was very difficult before we started). She effectively introduced the tools and techniques we could use , training us both, and I am using those same techniques with my other dogs. Very impressive. Cannot say enough, and we are so grateful for what we were able to accomplish.

Kat was able to help me after I adopted my 5 year old, Rufus. He was a rescue dog that didn't have the greatest go at life for the first 5 years. Sweet, loving boy, but he definitely needed some guidance as far as training and obedience went. She came over to our house- met with us- and put together a plan to help get him on the fast track to where he needed to be. Through very thorough one on one training she was able to get him to *not* jump with excitement on to visitors (and even me) when they came through the door, she trained him to always stay in "place" when commanded, and the biggest thing of all was that she was able to train him to walk on a leash. I know that sounds silly, but before she worked with him- he was all over the place on a leash. With her tools and methods, he now walks by my side as if the leash isn't even there. Even more so, I can now walk him (where it's permitted) OFF of the leash and he obeys every command. He's still the same sweet boy I adopted, but he wouldn't be the well trained boy he is today without the work and training she did with him.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
