Rich Dreiman says, "We first contracted with Popcorn Squad in December 2020 to have all of our popcorn ceiling's removed. The experience was fantastic, as we decided to take a trip during the week they were working, and when we returned we were stunned. The ceilings looked more incredible that what you might find on a new build. I had attempted to remove the popcorn from a small bathroom and thought I did ok, even with some minor plaster work, but their attention to quality and detail put my ceiling work to shame, so much so, I had them back to fix that bathroom. They were so very thorough, addressing all nail pops, drywall imperfections, and the water leak spot on our master ceiling. One day while they were wrapping up the ceiling, I was speaking the owner and mentioned that I was going to hire a team to paint the entire interior of our house. He indicated that they could do that for us and I jumped on it. They knocked it out of the park! We had them use 5-6 different paint colors and they covered all the walls, baseboards, trim, and doors. Day 1 & 2 were all about laying down protective sheeting, fixing pops/drywall issues, and even filling in old hardwired telephone junction boxes (personal request). We even had a glitch when we decided that we did not like the paint color we chose for the bathroom after 2 coats had already been applied. A quick change order over the phone and a minor/expected job cost increase and they were there the next day with the new color we wanted and had it on the wall that day. Honestly, our house looks better than when we bought it 15 years ago. I am so impressed with their quality and professionalism that I'm in talks to have them do the outside of the house next. The pictures I included are all taken after they were done. The prior wall colors were mostly light yellow in hallways/living/dining areas, red accent wall in family room, deep orange in master bedroom, green in one guest room, bright yellow in the other, and both bathrooms light blue. Couple of additional notes... Our house is a 1300 sq ft ranch. The ceilings took ~5 days and the walls took 7 (probably added a day with the change order).Cost.... They are not going to be the lowest bidder, but I can guarantee you that their results speak for themselves. This was completely reasonable in my opinion, especially if you want a professional quality job done right the first time. It's an investment in the upkeep of your home that you are going to looking at for the next 5-10 years. I can tell you from experience that it's best to have it done right than to have to look at sub-standard job and grumble about it for the next 5-10 years. Thanks Popcorn Squad!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you clean epoxy floors?

Cleaning an epoxy floor is an extensive job in any warehouse or larger space, making it a job best left to a professional who can get it done quickly and effectively. However, there are several bits of maintenance you should perform by yourself in between professional cleanings. For example, you can remove grit from the floor with a broom, dust mop and/or shop vacuum.  Make sure you wipe away chemical spills like automotive fluids before they become permanent spots on the floor.

What is the best epoxy garage floor coating?

The best epoxy garage floor coating is a premium multi-layer epoxy system. When you hire a professional, you can choose more durable options like 100% solids epoxy floor coating, which is great for repelling stains and abrasion. Choose a clear epoxy or polyurethane top coat to protect this layer.

What are the advantages of epoxy flooring?

Epoxy flooring has several advantages. The biggest benefit is its durability. Epoxy floors are highly durable and tend to outlast standard flooring systems. A few other pros include:

  • It’s also easy to maintain due to its glossy finish and seamless nature.
  • It can be highly customized. You can choose different colors, designs, effects and even inserts like coins, flakes and other details.
  • It's  affordable — far more so than hardwood and other types of flooring. This value continues to pay off over time.
  • It can be slip-resistant with additional additives.

What are the different types of epoxy floor coatings?

There are many different options for epoxy floor coatings, including:

  • Water-based epoxy coating
  • 100% solids epoxy
  • Polyurethane topcoat
  • Metallic epoxy
  • Mortar epoxy coatings
  • Self-leveling epoxy coating
  • Self-dispersing epoxy coating
  • Flake epoxy flooring
  • Mortar epoxy coating
  • Graveled epoxy coating
  • Terrazzo epoxy coating
  • And more

Talk to an epoxy flooring specialist in your area to see what your options are, and get advice on the best type to use on your floors.

What are epoxy floors?

Epoxy itself is made of polymer resins and hardening agents like glues, which (when mixed) cure to form a strong and durable chemical bond. Epoxy floors are excellent choices for warehouses, workshops, garages and other high-traffic, high-use areas where spill resistance is important. Epoxy floors are famously resilient, shiny and easy to keep clean.

How thick is epoxy floor coating?

Epoxy floor coatings typically range from 0.011 inches (11 mils) to 0.375 inches (375 mils). Thin coating systems have wide variability in their performance and are generally best for low-traffic areas, with the exception being high-performance topcoats that can handle heavier traffic in low-impact situations. Oftentimes, thicker coatings mean your project might be more expensive but will last longer. Talk to epoxy flooring professionals near you to discuss the pros and cons of thick and thin coatings.

How do you repair epoxy floors?

For large repairs (peeling, flaking, blistering, discoloring, etc.), it’s best to go with a professional — these repairs may require extra considerations only a professional can deliver. But for minor damage, you may choose to take the job on by yourself. Try patching up chips and cracks using a formulated epoxy repair compound.

Does epoxy flooring scratch easily?

Epoxy flooring is known for its high durability, and it does a good job of resisting scratches — especially when a topcoat is applied. However, it’s still possible to scratch and gouge epoxy floors with enough force. For this reason, it’s recommended that you take care when placing heavy items on your floors. For example, place padding under the supporting legs of any heavy object you’re moving to distribute some of the force over the flooring.

How long do epoxy floors last?

The lifespan of epoxy flooring depends heavily on where it’s located, how much traffic it sees, the company or contractor you hire and how well you stay on top of maintenance. Some experts say epoxy floors can last for seven, 10, 20 or even 30 years. Still, you will likely need to re-coat your concrete floors every couple of years. This is the case even in areas like commercial workspaces, professional garages, restaurants, factories, and other areas with plenty of foot traffic. For homes and other residential applications with lighter traffic, epoxy flooring is capable of lasting far longer.

Epoxy floor coating and installation is a highly specialized job that is best left to professionals and specialists. Plenty of companies and contractors offer epoxy floor cleaning, repair, coating and installation services for garages, warehouses, commercial workshops and even residential spaces.
