We needed electrical work to support a larger project ongoing at the house. Victor quickly responded to our request, was on time, worked well with our other contractors, and did a great job. He was flexible as the electrical job evolved - based on other contractor activities - and communicated with me proactively about his plan, the change to the budget etc. We have followup work ahead and will definitely use him.

I hired Sergio to repair a variety of household electrical problems all over my home which I am preparing to sell. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE MAN. He returned my first call within 24 hours. We scheduled the job and he arrived on time and sat patiently waiting 15 minutes for ME as I was delayed by a medical appt. But he had NO COMPLAINTS about my tardiness and did not rush through any jobs to make up for the time lost. Sergio is very patient and super pleasant to work with. I can't say enough good things about his ethics, his heart, soul, and dedication to his CRAFT, his creativity and sticktuitiveness, his insistence that there IS a way to fix ANY problem and then his willingness to go for it NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES and no matter how long it takes. My impression is that his joy comes from the customer's delight in a job done well. I have worked with many many service professionals and contractors. Sergio, BAR NONE, is the best of the best. I will hire him again, and again, and again for as long as he is in the business. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars is not enough - AWESOME SERVICE - GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND - CREATIVE - HARDWORKING - KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WISE - EXPERIENCED - OPERATES WITH VERY HIGH STANDARDS - INSISTS ON DOING JOB CORRECTLY NO MATTER WHAT - ADDRESSES ERRORS MADE BY PREVIOUS ELECTRICIANS - GOOD INSTINCTS - PROVIDES EDUCATION AND USEFUL TIPS TO THE CUSTOMER - EXPLAINS WHAT HE IS DOING - DOES NOT CHARGE WHAT OTHERS DO YET DOES MORE AND DOES IT RIGHT - KIND - TRUSTWORTHY - FRIENDLY - PATIENT - GENTLE SPIRIT - PROFESSIONAL AND RESPECTFUL For my job, Sergio came with an assistant and they worked together seamlessly as a team, as if they were dancing a waltz, each one anticipating the next step in the process and doing their part. Sergio doesn't just work for the money. What he does is for a living seems to be an intricate and fundamental part of who he is, and thus his good works proudly represent him. SERGIO YOU ARE SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!

Ron and his guy installed two light fixtures and three ceiling fans for me. They did a great job! Were very responsive, on time, and the work was great. One of the ceiling fans needed further adjustment, so he came back and fixed it no problem. Our regular contractor wanted to charge four times what Ron did. I am thrilled to have such great work available at such a reasonable price. Thanks, Ron!

This was without a doubt one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor. I had work done to remove a large fallen tree branch and repair of the fence that it crashed through, as well as deck repair including replacing a rotting deck post. Jaime got back to me almost immediately after my thumbtack request, came out the next day for an estimate, and completed all the work a few days after that. He was very easy to work with and he even fixed a few other things I noticed while he was there working. I would highly recommend him for your job.

Talked to gal in office. They were out that same day (December 23), and we couldn't get the leak to happen (we were watching it). I called back the next day (Christmas Eve). They came out again, and replaced the faucet that day. Matt did a great job. Very helpful and very professional. He was willing to take time on the project, even though it was afternoon on Christmas Eve. He helped me to pick out a faucet, as it required replacement. I'm pleased with his work. He also did some courtesy checks (system pressure, hot water heater and expansion tank). He was barely finished and on to the next job, when the office called again to check up on how things went during the job. The only thing is the price was a bit high. But, we're paying for the office staff, too. After being burned by independent contractors in the past, I really appreciate the check up and friendly communication that the office provided.

The repairman, Leroy Butler was outstanding in all areas except providing a list of costs other than just the total. I wanted a breakdown of the labor and parts involved in the installation to evaluate the value compared to other potential installers. I was very impressed with the automation of their processes and friendliness of all involved. I was also impressed with how quickly ThumbTack provided a list of qualified contractors.

This was our first time working with Jim's Carpentry. After the recent heavy rain and thunderstorms we had a piece of vinyl siding partially detach from our house, as well as a window valance that was completely removed. From start to finish, it could not have been a better experience. Jim was able to schedule an estimate the same day I posted on thumbtack. He was on time for the estimate and quoted us a very reasonable price. The price was so reasonable that we decided to have the shutters and the front door painted as well. When Jim noticed the hardware on the front door was rusted, he said he would replace it at no charge if we purchased the hardware...Nice!!! He was able to start the work the following day and again showed up exactly when he said he would. Jim took time and care to mare sure the work was done correctly and beautifully. One of my neighbors came over when Jim was working. We all chatted for a minute and Jim's demeanor is so relaxed, my neighbor was already practically hiring him for some work on his house. Jim finished the work the same day and it looks really really good. Jim cleaned up afterwards as well. My wife is proud that I hired a top notch contractor. I didn't want to admit that I got lucky with Jim contacting me for the job! Truthfully. I normally wouldn't bother leaving feedback on a service. This experience went so well that I would feel like a real jerk for not letting everyone know how much I appreciate the work Jim did. I certainly recommend him for your general contracting needs. Deck expansion in the future!!!

Rob Early and his guys did an excellent job installing our privacy fence and extending an existing fence on our property. He listened to our needs (keeping our persistent dogs in the fence!) and frequently asked for our input during the project. Rob was timely and finished the project before we even needed it completed. I recommend him to anyone looking for a contractor in the triangle area!

We contacted Chris initially regarding replacement of broken floor tiles in our 16 year old home. Despite his and our best efforts, replacement tiles could not be located. We opted then to replace the entire bathroom floor with wood-look ceramic tile. His workmanship & professionalism were both top notch and his price was reasonable. In order to meet the agreed to timeline, Chris & crew worked well into the evening. We recommend Doerner Family construction and will likely use again.

I highly recommend Bill to anyone seeking a general contractor. Several months ago, Bill reinforced our deck for a hot tub and reinforced an area under our living room for a large saltwater aquarium. He also tiled our floor and knocked down a wall. He was very professional and courteous. He got the job done in a timely manner and for a fair price. One of his workers accidentally broke a window, but Bill replaced it promptly and with no issues. We're planning to hire him again for future projects!

After my home was broken into just days before Christmas, without hesitation, Mike was on location and worked quickly to get my home secure. He was attentive, listened to and addressed my concerns and was clear on what the very reasonable costs for repair would be. Beyond that, he was very conscientious about making it right, attentive to detail ensuring the new door was properly installed and erasing any evidence that a break-in had occurred. As the original door had been installed without proper flashing by another contractor, Mike not only replaced the damaged door, but corrected the developing wood rot and emplaced the flashing as it should have been. As I was working out of town, communication was outstanding, professional. He sent frequent photos of the entire process from tear down to final touches. Attention to detail: setting the new door ensuring it was plumb, no airgaps in the weather seal, installing the new siding (to replace what was damaged by break-in), caulking, painting the sheetrock and the external siding and clean up. Break-ins are violating and unfun. Mike really took the emotional edge off of it, getting the job done and done right at a very reasonable rate. I would certainly call upon Raleigh Property Services again in a heartbeat should the need arise.

Arthur does amazing work. Period. He is without a doubt one of the most qualified guys in his field, he is personable and friendly to be around, and his work really speaks for itself. I hired him for 3 days of work finishing my garage, and I’m happy to say his work product in the garage even looks better than the inside of my house does! We are calling him back for 10 more days of work as soon as he is available, if you have not hired him or are considering to hire him, he is a great value, no bullshit, honest contractor who delivers what he says he will, and to a quality standard that puts other contractors to shame.

We were preparing our home for sale and knew we had some windows with broken seals that needed to be replaced. Hellis Family Glass was very responsive to our request to come out, was prompt with a quote and even helped bring another contractor to the table to repair some rotted wood. The only thing that could have gone better was to have had a better explanation for how long the ordering of the glass, getting it in and then scheduling the work was going to take, in advance. We were surprised when it took more than three weeks to get it done.

I had Anchor Renovation Concepts complete my basement remodel and I couldn't be happier on how it turned out. Better than I could have imagined. Finding a contractor can be complicated. Not only was Gary professional, knowledgeable, responsive, but he also was intuitive which set him apart from the other 3 contractors I was in contact with. He asked questions that made sure we got the best ideas/ layouts for the space we remodeled. If you work with this company, I guarantee you will be blown away by the outcome of work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
