Introduction: Heather Hills is a nationally certified teacher of music. She holds a BM in performance from Indiana University Bloomington and has considerable experience performing on both harp and piano. An independent music teacher since 2015, she enjoys working with students of all ages and levels to develop their musicianship and give them a creative outlet for self-expression. A passionate performer herself, she works to give her students the skill and confidence to succeed onstage or wherever their music might take them. Students studying with Heather can count on receiving a complete musical education. Music history, music theory, and ear training are taught alongside engaging repertoire to enable students to grow into mature, well-rounded musicians. Two annual recitals give students the opportunity to develop stage-presence and memorization skills. Since all lessons are private, each student receives the personal attention and tailored curriculum ideal for his personal growth.

Piano Lessons (for children or teenagers)

We are loving our experience with Heather Hills! My 8-year-old daughter takes piano with her once a week. (This is her first experience with piano lessons). The home setting is welcoming and beautiful and Heather's personality is wonderful. I have been so impressed with how much my child has already learned after about 8 weeks. She is always eager to practice and after each lesson she is in such a positive mood, excited to share her new songs. We appreciate Heather's ability to be flexible with our schedule as well--due to illness or vacation, etc. I (and my daughter) highly recommend Heather Hills for a piano teacher!

I came to Heather a little over a year ago as an adult beginner eager to learn piano. Since then she has helped me learn to read music, start understanding music theory, and has helped me learn to play many enjoyable songs. Heather has been patient with my stubbornness, yet is continuously challenging me to learn new things, attempt harder songs, and understand more complex music theory. I know that I still have a lot to learn, and I’m confident that Heather is the right teacher to help me achieve my piano goals. I would highly recommend her to anyone interested in learning to play the piano. -Paul T.

Heather is not only an extremely talented musician, she is a kind and engaging teacher. My daughter Molly's technique and love for music has thrived since studying with Heather for the past five years. In addition to piano, Heather introduced Molly to the harp which gave her the unique opportunity to learn and play such a beautiful instrument. I first met Heather when she played the Celtic Harp at my father's birthday party. I was so impressed with her talent and professionalism, I asked her that day if she also taught, which thankfully she did. My daughter is a senior this year and decided to write her college essay on the one thing she can't live without, her music. I thank Heather for instilling in her students her passion for music!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I offer 30-minute lessons for $30, 45-minute lessons for $40, and 60-minute lessons for $50. Also ask about the sibling discount—schedule two siblings' lessons back to back and pay only $50 an hour regardless of the length of each lesson.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I spend the first lesson getting to know the student and assessing his skill level and long-term goals. I also lay out expectations for lessons (such as practicing and payment schedule) and review the studio policies with the student or the student's parent. I want the student to get a feel for the instrument right away, so much of the first lesson is spent learning the fundamentals of playing.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Part of my degree requirements included taking a class in harp pedagogy and working with the students in the pre-college program. Since then, I have gotten hands-on experience working with students of different ages and levels, both in private lessons and in student recitals.
