We needed electrical work to support a larger project ongoing at the house. Victor quickly responded to our request, was on time, worked well with our other contractors, and did a great job. He was flexible as the electrical job evolved - based on other contractor activities - and communicated with me proactively about his plan, the change to the budget etc. We have followup work ahead and will definitely use him.

I hired Sergio to repair a variety of household electrical problems all over my home which I am preparing to sell. THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE MAN. He returned my first call within 24 hours. We scheduled the job and he arrived on time and sat patiently waiting 15 minutes for ME as I was delayed by a medical appt. But he had NO COMPLAINTS about my tardiness and did not rush through any jobs to make up for the time lost. Sergio is very patient and super pleasant to work with. I can't say enough good things about his ethics, his heart, soul, and dedication to his CRAFT, his creativity and sticktuitiveness, his insistence that there IS a way to fix ANY problem and then his willingness to go for it NO MATTER WHAT IT TAKES and no matter how long it takes. My impression is that his joy comes from the customer's delight in a job done well. I have worked with many many service professionals and contractors. Sergio, BAR NONE, is the best of the best. I will hire him again, and again, and again for as long as he is in the business. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars is not enough - AWESOME SERVICE - GOES ABOVE AND BEYOND - CREATIVE - HARDWORKING - KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WISE - EXPERIENCED - OPERATES WITH VERY HIGH STANDARDS - INSISTS ON DOING JOB CORRECTLY NO MATTER WHAT - ADDRESSES ERRORS MADE BY PREVIOUS ELECTRICIANS - GOOD INSTINCTS - PROVIDES EDUCATION AND USEFUL TIPS TO THE CUSTOMER - EXPLAINS WHAT HE IS DOING - DOES NOT CHARGE WHAT OTHERS DO YET DOES MORE AND DOES IT RIGHT - KIND - TRUSTWORTHY - FRIENDLY - PATIENT - GENTLE SPIRIT - PROFESSIONAL AND RESPECTFUL For my job, Sergio came with an assistant and they worked together seamlessly as a team, as if they were dancing a waltz, each one anticipating the next step in the process and doing their part. Sergio doesn't just work for the money. What he does is for a living seems to be an intricate and fundamental part of who he is, and thus his good works proudly represent him. SERGIO YOU ARE SUPERB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!

This was without a doubt one of the best experiences I've had with a contractor. I had work done to remove a large fallen tree branch and repair of the fence that it crashed through, as well as deck repair including replacing a rotting deck post. Jaime got back to me almost immediately after my thumbtack request, came out the next day for an estimate, and completed all the work a few days after that. He was very easy to work with and he even fixed a few other things I noticed while he was there working. I would highly recommend him for your job.

This was our first time working with Jim's Carpentry. After the recent heavy rain and thunderstorms we had a piece of vinyl siding partially detach from our house, as well as a window valance that was completely removed. From start to finish, it could not have been a better experience. Jim was able to schedule an estimate the same day I posted on thumbtack. He was on time for the estimate and quoted us a very reasonable price. The price was so reasonable that we decided to have the shutters and the front door painted as well. When Jim noticed the hardware on the front door was rusted, he said he would replace it at no charge if we purchased the hardware...Nice!!! He was able to start the work the following day and again showed up exactly when he said he would. Jim took time and care to mare sure the work was done correctly and beautifully. One of my neighbors came over when Jim was working. We all chatted for a minute and Jim's demeanor is so relaxed, my neighbor was already practically hiring him for some work on his house. Jim finished the work the same day and it looks really really good. Jim cleaned up afterwards as well. My wife is proud that I hired a top notch contractor. I didn't want to admit that I got lucky with Jim contacting me for the job! Truthfully. I normally wouldn't bother leaving feedback on a service. This experience went so well that I would feel like a real jerk for not letting everyone know how much I appreciate the work Jim did. I certainly recommend him for your general contracting needs. Deck expansion in the future!!!

Rob Early and his guys did an excellent job installing our privacy fence and extending an existing fence on our property. He listened to our needs (keeping our persistent dogs in the fence!) and frequently asked for our input during the project. Rob was timely and finished the project before we even needed it completed. I recommend him to anyone looking for a contractor in the triangle area!

They follow through with their quality of work. We had tiles repaired and some staff must have stepped on them messing them up overnight. Chris returned free of charge to fix them again and make sure my client was happy. We will use them again thank you

I was having a very hard time finding a quality contractor. One came out, looked didn't take any measurements and was going to use old parts, another never got back with a quote after coming out and the third was so overbooked, had to cancel the consult.I was so frustrated. Then I found Lee, with VR Resolutions. He was so professional on the phone. He came out right away to give an estimate.I had a written estimate the next morning, just as he said I would. He found where I have a leak causing the wood rot, where the others were just going to cover it up. The estimate was very fair and his suggestions were excellent. My work will be completed on the 23rd. I am so excited, I couldn't wait till then to share how professional and wonderful Lee of VR Resolutions is. I will update when the work is completed, but I am confident it will be a raving review.

Bottom line, Phil knows carpentry. We had a tough situation here at the Town of Morrisville where some contractor built soffits out of a cheap material that appeared to be drywall and it all started falling apart. Not only did Phil give me the best price to replace the soffits with vinyl but he did an excellent job and did it rather quickly. I would highly recommend this company. For me, Craftsman Unlimited Carpentry is on the top of my list for carpentry contractors. If you are in the Morrisville area, stop by and see the magic he did on our bathroom soffits at the Morrisville Community Park bathrooms at the end of the entrance road. For carpentry, Phil is the man!

My husband & I would highly recommend Jesse. We called on Jesse to complete a 50 amp circuit & GFCI outlet for a future outdoor spa. We ended up also hiring him to install the necessary wiring for a backyard floodlight. He completed all projects in one day & was wonderfully competent & professional. Unlike some other contractors we've worked with, Jesse was timely with providing a quote, scheduling the work & completing the project. My husband asked him for a recommendation on a carpenter who might help us install some garage shelving. Jesse knew someone & within hours, texted us his name & contact info. Doing what you say you're going to do, otherwise known as integrity, is a trait many contractors have lost sight of. Not Jesse Stamper. You & your home will be in great hands if you hire him.

We were preparing our home for sale and knew we had some windows with broken seals that needed to be replaced. Hellis Family Glass was very responsive to our request to come out, was prompt with a quote and even helped bring another contractor to the table to repair some rotted wood. The only thing that could have gone better was to have had a better explanation for how long the ordering of the glass, getting it in and then scheduling the work was going to take, in advance. We were surprised when it took more than three weeks to get it done.

Jenniss Harrell was absolutely awesome. He provided a quote for our roof replacement in one day and the quote was very reasonable. We had the roof replaced in one day and I couldn't be more pleased. Jenniss is very professional and communicates well as to all aspects of the project. He is also a very kind person and it was an extreme pleasure working with him and his company. We will definitely be using Olde Towne Construction again for other home projects.

We were very, very satisfied with Jameel Sheriff and his team. In the past our experience with building contractors were very disappointed. However, Jameel and team always arrived on time, the work was exactly as needed and done perfectly and completely. We greatly appreciated his great work ethic and are going to have he and his team come back to do more masonry and cement work. We are confident to always get a job well done and the price quotes are always fair. Patricia and Al Cheaure

Mr. Carter replaced several pieces of vinyl fascia on my house and workshop, re-attached a section of guttering, and painted a small stained section of vinyl siding. I was impressed by the professionalism he demonstrated as well as by the quality of the work and the care they took in doing it. Reasonably priced, too. I definitely recommend considering TC Carter Co for any general contracting work that you may be considering for your own home. Thank you, Mr. Carter!

I always stand behind my word with the customers. I prefer, whatever the task may be, that the customers pay for their materials up front to the agreement. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
