Just bought a house and within a month we had a bad clog in the pipes between the house and the sewer main... it was completely clogged - could not use any faucet or toilet without flooding the downstairs toilet (it made a huge mess downstairs which freaked my wife out). I called Rescue Router and LAB plumbing. Rescue Router came around noon, an uninterested and snotty 20 something. To snake the line (the clog was only 12-15 feet from the house) he quoted me close to $600. Ridiculous. When LAB arrived, I spoke with Leroy about the problem, he gave me a quote of $190. He was also very courteous and professional and set to work immediately and cleared the pipe in no time. Did a great job! Turns out we had been flushing paper towels which is a no-no. I have a few projects I'd like to do around the house, minor bathroom remodeling which he again gave me a very good quote on so I'll definitely use him again Don't bother with any of the larger companies - you will end up paying through the nose. LAB Plumbing will be my go to plumber from now on. Thanks!

He is very diligent and meticulous when it comes to his work. He worked out every detail, and even sketched out his plans plainly so I knew what was going on. And on top of his attention to detail, he is also very efficient. The jobs that he does are always done fairly quickly without sacrificing any of the quality. Santiago's versatility was also very appealing. He is skilled in a number of tasks making him a great choice for any project or remodeling

Roberto responded very quickly to our request for a quote. We reached out late Sunday night, and he came by first thing Monday morning, and replaced our bathroom exhaust fan by noon. Even with our short time with him, I could tell that Roberto is honest and trustworthy. He is personable yet professional, and he showed me some useful tips as he was working. His rate was reasonable. We will be contacting him again, in case of emergency repairs or potential renovation ideas.

I needed a company to go and replace a tile for one of my customers. After the work was completed, my customer informed me that this company did a wonderful job and that they were so pleased with the work they were hiring the company to redo the tile in their bathroom. Making sure my customers are taken care of is something I pride myself in and knowing that they were in good hands with this company made the whole situation a lot less stressful. Thank you Doerner Family Construction!!!

I would most definitely hire Bill Pullen again. My sewer water pipe had backed up into my house and I had to do a full downstairs remodel( Sheetrock, doors, molding floors bathroom... everything) in a couple of weeks. I normally do all my own remodels however since I had a time constraint I hired Bill and he not only did that but he also helped me with my Flooring subcontractor who is trying to make things difficult. I have more projects coming up that I will need more than 2 ppl so I will definitely be hiring Bill!

3D Remodeling did an outstanding job on the repairs at my home. I had accumulated a list of Things to Do and I needed assistance. The list included repairs to a double wooden gate that was a small project on its own, replacing boards and installing new hinges. They also replaced a new kitchen light, replaced the wall lights outside the garage and on the front porch. In just a few hours they had completed my list of things that I had wanted done for months. I am very happy with the work and would recommend 3D Remodeling to anyone who needs a project completed and wants a dependable, professional job done. 3D Remodeling will be the first call I make for any home repair projects. I had such an amazing experience with MND Construction. I was extremely nervous about hiring a contractor for my new roof, but the professionalism and the patience with all of my questions helped ease my nerves. We had tried to go through someone else but they never contacted us within a good amount of time. MND had contacted us right back on the spot to set up a time and date they could come out to give us a quote on their work. They were as efficient and good as they promised. We only waited two days before they came back out and they started their work on our house. We thought that it was going to take longer than what they said but they replaced my whole roof within a day and a half!!! The work looks amazing, the mess was very minimal and I have already recommended them to anyone that I know who needs construction work done to their home! The guys who came out were very upfront about all of the costs and he kept his word. He even had said that if I didn't like it they would fix the errors (but there were none)!!! I also had my garage fixed by them and some tweaks with my windows while they were already out there. They didn't come back another day to fix it, they took the time and they listened to everything I had concerns about. I was also thinking about expanding one of my rooms out and they were able to give me a better idea and understanding of the project! I look forward to working with them more and like I said I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone that I know! I am very pleased with their work! Thank you so much MND! You guys are truly awesome!!

We couldn't have asked for anyone better than Mike. He did excellent work on the backsplash we requested and then fixed the poor work that others had done including painting various areas, patching large holes in a bathroom wall, altering a door to fully close that had been put up quickly, and putting in a new light in the crawl space just to mention some. He is truly such a gentleman. We would whine about something that was in need of work and he would volunteer to get it done. The house is empty, so he came in throughout the early hours of the morning (2am -6am or earlier) and some late afternoons to make sure he had the job done with a great deal of quality and timeliness. I had updates at least once a day and pictures always accompanied them. I turned down the contractor my realtor recommended because I didn't appreciate his attitude, and took a chance on Thumbtack. I am so glad I did. I would definitely recommend him for any service he provides, and we _will_ use him again in our new house. I just wish we'd known him when we first moved in. I'm posting some of the photos he would send each day showing each stage he was in. Needless to say, call him first before you try someone else.

Kimberley and Patrick have been very responsive, they have paid attention to details, and have provided suggestions for improvements that we would have otherwise missed. Highly recommended.

Replaced two doors in our bathroom that would knock into each other when both opened. Completed all the work and cleaned up well. There were a few touch up issues I had to take care of but Bill took care of me. I would recommend them. Worked through a few different options up front to find the best solution.

Carlos and his team have been just fabulous to work with. They have handled so many projects for us, from small to massive. All handled until we were 100% satisfied. Below is list of the projects they have completed for us over the last year: 1. Total renovation of master bathroom - Demo, all tile work, electrical, sheetrock repairs, paint, plumbing, repairs to lots of water damaged areas, and construction of pony wall. 2. Repairs to damaged wood rot due to woodpecker. 3. Painting (to include smoothing out ceiling) 4. Paint/glaze kitchen cabinets 5. Construction of retaining wall and revisions to existing irrigation set up. 6. Various other small projects, as needed. As you can see, Carlos' group can handle just about anything. We will never call anyone else.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
