Marla and her team provided exceptional service at a very reasonable price! They arrived on time and moved everything from our storage unit to our new apartment in only 3 hours! I contacted a national moving company, and they wanted to charge twice as much and take twice as long. These guys are lifesavers! I will recommend everyone I know to use their service! Thank you so much!!! :-)

Excellent work! So glad with how they did their job. Not only did they help with moving into my new house but they were respectful and trustworthy... which is a big plus because they carried and delivered my belongings. They came on time and didn't disappoint. Thank you so much Davorius and Oshane! If you need help with a moving job these are the people to call.

After 21 years my wife and I moved to another part of town. We called the owners Corey and Karen, and they replied promptly. We negotiated a price, received clear instructions as to what would happen on moving day, as well as who would be involved. When moving day arrived we were amazed at how quickly this team of 4 went about their work. Corey, Karen, Richard, and Stephen are extremely courteous, honest, and hard working. No standing around at all-just work, work, work. They also took great care to protect our belongings. After it was all done, they cleaned our property immaculately. When it was over, bill was exactly as agreed upon. If you want a first rate couple to do your moving call Corey and Karen. You'll be glad you did! Love you guys!

I was pleased from the moment I spoke to Earl on the phone setting up the details to saying goodbye and THANKING them for being AMAZING and delivering much more than what they promised! I started my moving day with another company (Lightning Bolt Movers) that was referred from our rental property management company we are renting our house from. The other company started at 5am and left at 8am and left us wanting to hire them for more time only to con us!!! I got on Thumbtack and THE STRATEGIC MOVERS were so FAST to quote me and get in touch with me! I did get other quotes however after speaking with EARL on the phone I felt like his moving company would TAKE CARE OF US! He had a GREAT RATE worth EVERY DOLLAR! He was ON TIME and FOLLOWED THROUGH on every word he said! The team that came out to move us was POLITE and WORKED HARD! I personally will only hire The Strategic Movers EVERY time I move from now on! ALL in ALL a job WELL done! If you ever are in a tight time frame or planning ahead and need quality work that you can TRUST then call The Strategic Movers, LLC!

My husband and I hired Bellhops Moving to help us move 3 heavy pieces of furniture. Bellhops recommended using 3 movers which worked out perfectly. The guys arrived ~10 before our scheduled move time which was really nice. They didn't waste any time, were very polite, and very helpful. They had a positive attitude the whole time and completed the move successfully. We recommend using Bellhops Moving for your move.

We highly recommend Bruce for anything related to pool tables. We hired him to disassemble our table as we are moving home to Louisiana next week. His price was very competitive . He built very sturdy crates for our 3 slate inlays. He was timely, reliable, professional and honest. We just left a key for him under our doormat so he could let himself In and out and we were very comfortable and had no worries at all. His work is exceptional. You cannot go wrong if you choose Bruce and Classic Billiards!

Great experience with CJ and Global Moving Professionals. Honestly, I got quotes from others who didn't understand the scope of what I had to move. CJ was spot on from his quote. He and his crew showed up on time, very professional, and completed moving my furniture in no time. The took extra precautions and removed a door to get my furniture out with damaging the door or furniture. I would hire again and would highly recommend Global Moving Professionals.

Renee was very trustworthy, quick to respond, she was very professional and fun. She did an outstanding job and I like it so much, she is coming back Friday. Highly recommended her. She withered through the storm with out condition as my unit went out also. She deep cleaned and did a very through job. She paid attention to detail. I will use her moving forward more. Its a win-win situation - I didn't have too do it, but it looked as though I did. Can't wait to see the flowers and the yard work you will do and the reorganization of closets. Windows looked really good. Thank you for coming out on such short notice. She's the BOMB! BAM, my house is clean. I have OCD-it is very clean...

Timely delivery of my belongings, zero damage, and no over billing and pinpoint accuracy makes Pick Up Movers better than any other moving companies. Recently I used them while moving to my new apartment. Their movers were so efficient that I did not even bother to monitor them. I really do not know how they managed to execute such a move so effortlessly. I just want to thank Pick Up Movers.

I move all the time for work so I have experience dealing with moving companies and I can honestly say Robert and his team were awesome! Although they were running a little late due to the afternoon thunderstorm, they absolutely made up for it with non stop hard work. They took the extra effort to make sure all my furniture was protected, then set up every room in my new home which saved me 2 weeks of time trying to carry boxes all over my house. Would definitely use you guys again and would recommend you guys to everyone. Thank you for all you guys did yesterday!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
