Introduction: I am a certified middle school mathematics teacher and taught for over 18 years. I have also taught self-contained kindergarten and 4th-, 5th- and 6th-grade classrooms before I decided to focus on middle school math. I am currently homeschooling my 7th-grade son and have a full classroom in my home, complete with every learning and teaching tool possible. During my last years in a public school classroom, I served as 7th grade chair and mathematics chair and led a "Homework Academy" for students after school who didn't have the benefit of academic assistance at home. I am passionate about teaching and matching teaching methodology to individual learning styles. My specialty is the student who does not "Sit and Get", or as we kindly term it in education, "lecture"! Research has repeatedly shown that students struggle with learning through lecture. Therefore, it is my practice to design lessons that allow students to interact with the material through the use of manipulatives, demonstrations, experiments, foldables, (I could go on and on!). Students adore learning this way, and their knowledge base exponentially grows. There is a place for some memorization in math, but concepts must be taught first using the aforementioned methods. Too often, a student who struggles in math or algebra in upper elementary and middle grades has not been taught the fundamental concepts. Taking the time to retrace and reteach the concept in an interactive way allows the student to achieve mastery. I live in the Porters Neck area of Wilmington, NC, and you are welcome to bring your child to my home classroom. I can also conduct tutoring sessions by phone or through Skype, web camera, or social media applications. Distance learning can be enhanced using such tools, and I will be able to utilize my full classroom (projector, whiteboard, manipulatives, math library) to make learning interactive and fun! I charge $25-$30 per hour depending on the preparation needed before the session. Because I am homeschooling my seventh grader, I am able to work anytime during the day, evening, or weekend. I will also gladly contract to tutor for 2-3 hour sessions depending on your child's age and grade level. This can be of benefit if you are planning vacations during the school year and want to keep the learning process going as you enjoy time with your family. On a further note, I have just joined with Thumbtack, and do not have references linked to my work. However, I will gladly provide you with an extensive list of references if requested. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further information. I really look forward to working with your child!

Amy is compassionate and patient when teaching others. She always has a smile for her students. Amy always impressed me with the way she could interact with her classroom and teach them in a way that challenged them to want to learn.
