My project (front porch and kitchen renovation) initially started with another local General Contractor. In the beginning the Contractor (owner of the company) seemed reasonable and nice. His bid was within my budget and we started work. But soon I realized what I had gotten myself into. It wasn't pretty. He turned out to be spread very thin (coming from his employee) very rude and unprofessional and the 3 weeks project (based on his initial plan) soon got extended to 2 and half months resulting in me having to eat out for 2 and half weeks because the kitchen was non functional. I had to reach out to Thumbtack for help. I fired those guys who charged me almost the full amount for a terrible job. Royal Home came to my rescue and saved the day. Roy (the owner) was very understanding of my problems and challenges from the beginning. He was very clear in the timeline and followed through as planned. His staff are very polite and very professional. I will highly recommend Roy and his team and I look forward to using them for my basement remodeling soon.

I hired him for a tile job in a small basement bathroom. He and his team ripped out the old floor (ugly linoleum, I think) and had it all cleaned out within an hour. They came back the next day to lay the tile, then the third day to grout, and lastly a few days later to complete the finishing touches. Overall I was impressed. They took all of the trash with them once done which saved me time from having to do that, and they always checked with me during the job to make sure I liked what they had done. The tile looks beautiful and I'm so glad I went with my decision on this project. I will be hiring again for another tile job with them.

Avila Bros. did an awesome job on installing laminate wood floors in our kitchen and dining room. They had to tear up wood subfloor and old linoleum floor in the kitchen before installing new floor so it would transition to the next room even leveled, and you would never know. I'm impressed with how well the 2 rooms flow together and love it everyday I walk in my kitchen and dining area! They honored the times I was available and were very friendly and respectful. I'll be using them for projects in the near future!

Bob was the best investment I've made for my home! I hired him to finish a bathroom in my basement laundry room. He offered me a solution four other contractors never suggested and ended up helping me save a lot of money while expanding the amount of room! He offered great suggestions and always kept me updated on progress. Incredibly professional and respectful of my home by always cleaning up the worksite. Oh, and he offers wonderful advice on dog training too! All around the best contractor I've worked with in the Omaha area and the first name on my list for all future progress. Call him now, you won't regret it!

Late in 2006 we purchsed a smaller house and thanks to our realator, we were introduced to Nelson and Sons. The home we purchased was in need of extensive work to make it safe, comfortable and beautified. Before we moved in, all the floors were replaced, carpeting some rooms, congolumn in kitchen and wood in the living room. This was accomplished perfectly for us and we could move in our furniture. There were also areas in the basement that needed repair - this too was done very well. The trim work on the ceilings and wainscoating are beautiful. After we moved in, we had the attached garage converted to a large dining room. It was a massive effort that he accomplished with apparent ease with his skills with woodwork, and all the necessary things to accomplish for a raised floor. After this, we needed a porch for our back door. Cement was poured, columns were added for the elongted roof of our porch. A beautiful place for morning coffee when weather/temperatures permit. We also decided we needed a garage. The 2 car garage is remarkably sturdy with an attic and very well built.. Travis worked the better part of a year for us. He was always punctual at work. His initiative, suggestions and high quality of work was appreciated by us. His special touch for a project were improvements that exceeded our expectations. During his time working here he detected several problem areas. Thanks to him our home is now safer and more comfortable. He also remodeled our bathroom and also cut a small window for this windowless bathroom, which now is very attractive for a bathroom. Another project was remodeling our kitchen - - new sink, fixtures, cubbards and dishwasher were installed. My wife was exceptionally pleased as it was remodeled exactly as she wished. Throughout it was a pleasure to have Travis working on our home. He is honest and trustworthy. We gave him a set of house keys so he could work when we were out of town a few days. A couple years after all this, we decided we needed a front porch. I showed him a photo of a portico on a Louisiana Plantation and told him we wanted one like that. He replicated the photo perfectly and now we have a very attractive portico with 2 large white columns. We have received numerous compliments on the beauty of our portico. My wife and I are tetired and this our retirement home. We now live in comfort, safety and beauty - - - and a special comfort knowing we can call on Nelson and Sons whom we can trust when we need work done or an inspection.

We had a great experience in using Crusader Construction Company! Benjamin Jones is very knowledgeable in many trade areas. We used him to create a now beautiful bathroom! He installed a new sink, counter top, sconce lighting (his idea, which I LOVE) and new wiring throughout for safety switches, exhaust fan and overhead light in my shower! He also removed an awkward inside door/wall. The room looks so much larger! We were so pleased with his professionalism and quick responses that we hired him AGAIN to help with finishing our basement (picture to follow.) He's strong too, to carry all that drywall! haha It's nice to finally find a jack-of-all-trades kind of guy that we can TRUST. We'll be calling again for our next project for sure!

I can't say enough great things about Donnie and Gage Electrical Contracting Inc, but hopefully the following will help you decided on Donnie and Gage Electrical Contracting Inc for any of your electrical needs. When I first sent thumbtack an inquire about an electrician needed for my jobs, Donnie reached out and was ready to tackle my jobs and any questions I had for the upcoming project. Unlike the other companies I was talking with, Donnie and Gage Electrical Contracting Inc offered a free quote to come and look at what work needed to be done and how much it would cost. From the start of the Thumbtack message right up to the end of the job, Donnie was a true professional! He always knew the answers to the questions that I had from myself, and also the many more questions my mom had as well. Donnie installed three electrical outlets, a light in the basement, LED lights in the kitchen, and also installed a fan in our kitchen for us. When the fan went up and was installed, it ran perfectly with no wobble, unlike other fans I've seen install that has the death shake to it. The price for all this work to include labor was very reasonable and I would definitely recommend Donnie and Gage Electrical Contracting Inc for any electrical work needed. I am so incredibly happy for the work Donnie did for my family, and in the future if I ever need more electrical work done.....Donnie will be the first person I am going to contact. Thank you again Donnie for being a true professional and getting the job done right the first time!

Joseph was easy to work with and professional. I did not select his bid based on who was the cheapest, rather, I chose this contractor from the description of his experience and I was not disappointed. I realized that I definitely did not provide him with clear enough details on a tricky door installation in my basement. The doorway was quite a bit wider than the door and nowhere near level. However, he was able to troubleshoot the issues, quickly complete the job and he left everything very tidy.

Very personable and professional work. They answered any and all questions I had for what I needed done, as well as a free quote for the work being done. While doing the work they are very punctual and fast but also do the job correctly. They completely finished our basement including a bedroom, bathroom, and living space and we couldn’t be happier with the results. They even finished ahead of schedule and we will call them again for any other projects we need done.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
