Dustin was hired to move furniture around in our home - basement to living room, and vice versa. He was prompt, fair, communicative, exactly everything you would want when hire help. I have no reservations at all referring him and will be requesting his services in a few months for a new deck.

I hired Chad to strip and re-paint our deck with a heavy duty paint. We had some issues with the paint that was used, which was not Chad's fault and I was impressed with Chad's willingness to continue to come back and work with us to make the deck look as good as possible. I would recommend Chad to anyone based on his professionalism and customer service.

Simon did a tremendous job for me with a structural deck problem and other issues. I would use him again with any project I had because of his work ethic, knowledge, and ability to complete the job at a very reasonable price. I am confident that he could perform any task that one would need. HE WAS UNBELIEVABLE! If one needed to have a house pre-inspected before one puts it up for sale, he is your man. My house is up right now and I wish I had used him at the onset.

Matt added a staircase to our existing deck. He had to add a cement pad for the stairs to sit on which involved cutting some existing poured cement edging. All work was done quickly and we are very happy with the finished product. Highly recommend and we will be hiring him again for future projects!!

RE: farmhouse kithchen Love the new kitchen, very happy with the way it turned out. I know how much of a challenge it is working in this old house, nothing plumb or square creates quite a challenge when installing cabinets and such. The new tile on the floor and backsplash turned out great. Real happy, would highly recommend.

Mike always responded in a timely manner when called and he did an excellent job on my decks. I am very much satisfied with his work quality. Even working around the weather, he met my goal on having the two decks done. I would definitely refer him to a friend.

Kyle and his team did an outstanding job on our deck and fence I have them coming back in the spring not only to stain the deck and fence but I've hired them to paint the outside of the house. They do a wonderful job at a fair price.

Dave and his crew replaced our aging deck. We discussed design considerations and he put together a plan to expand the deck size over what our old one was. We have a septic system so there are considerations for how close you can put a structure to it. He checked codes requirements and lined up all needed permits. The old deck was demoed in a few hours and hauled away. Then we determined the surface below the deck needed to be built up a few inches higher to get the grade correct for flowing water away from the foundation. We didn't have a truck large enough to haul that much dirt without taking many trips so he arranged for a trailer to get it all in one load. The pilings went in next and after letting the concrete cure the deck was framed up and surfaced. We opted to go with a metal railings which are aluminum with a tough textured coating. The deck is constructed out of western red cedar. This combination of material choices is the most cost effective considering the price of composite deck materials along with the ongoing maintenance that traditional wooden railing need. We're happy with the results! The larger deck surface is much more inviting and usable than our old deck. It looks great and is solid. My wife and I joke that it'd hold the house up in a tornado (hopefully we never have to find out!).

Ray Kelch was very professional and did an outstanding job with my concrete driveway expansion. He was prompt and completed the job in one day. I had drainage issues and he made sure he put a swale in the concrete so when it rained, water would flow to the curb. He made an extra cut and did extra work like even out the clay excavation and placed sand and even threw in extra rebar at no extra charge! He is very friendly and told me why he used a laser level to make sure my driveway would slope correctly, and basically explained all he did to make it a superb job that will last me for many years. I was very satisfied with the price he charged, which was less than other competing bids. In addition, he arranged for the concrete delivery and finished the surface very nicely to match my existing driveway. I plan on using his services for my next project, which will be an outdoor deck. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
