I accepted his quote (who I was what I am used to paying other companies for same service) and Daniel arrived the same day at the time he said he would arrive. He was observant as to seams that needed caulking and there was no additional charge for caulking the seams that leaked. We have lots of trees nears our house so I asked him to come back in about a month and his quote for second trip was discounted!

WOW!!! Chad & Tracey constructions is our favorite company of the year. They have been FANTASTIC!!! We bought our first home this Spring had had a few renovations that we wanted to be done before we moved in to make it our dream home. I found Chad on thumbtack, after listing 4 different listings for each separate project. Did not even imagine finding someone who could complete all the projects but, Chad responded to all of them.  After a chat on the phone about what we wanted done and photos sent, we booked! Their prices were very reasonable and he just seemed like an overall genuine dude. During the project week he was in constant communication with us and was very helpful the entire time. There were a few additional things that needed to be done and he was great about finding the easiest, cheapest solution. He also sent us photos of the project (we weren’t living there yet). Fastfoward to the results. OH MY GOD. Simply amazing. His team beyond exceeded my expectations. The paint was perfect, the projects were perfect, and everything was perfectly cleaned upon leaving. We are so happy with the results. I am already thinking of future projects just to hire them again. I you ever are thinking about hiring them for ANYTHING, DO IT!! Seriously, do it. They were so great and I cant even imagine a better, more reasonably priced, more professional team. Thank you guys for everything! We will be back. -Jennie and Phil.

I have been in the insurance industry for the past 4 years. I have never found any restoration professional who has worked so well with my clients and took care of them with extreme care and professionalism. I have referred Roy to over 40 of my top clients and he continues to impress with his quality of work. I will continue to refer my clients to Roy because I know that they are in great hands.

I phoned Jeff to investigate multiple electrical repair issues at my home. He came out to give me an estimate promptly and professionally. This work was completed on time and on budget. I also had him add some much needed lighting to the master bath area. While he was working on that lighting I left him a note to also add an updated and quiet fan to another bathroom. He did not complain about the late add on to the additional work and phoned me with the cost prior to the installation. I could not be more pleased with all of the results.I will be referrring him to anyone that needs a qualified electrician.

Couldn't have been happier with Luigi! Not only did he meet us the day after we requested a painter to go through the home and provide an accurate quote, but his team also finished painting an entire main floor (trim, ceilings, and walls) in less than two days. We've actually talked about hiring his team again to do the exterior trim once we're ready. Highly recommend!

He was very attentive and promptly returned my calls. He answered all my questions over the phone and through emails. He delivered on the time frame that was given. He provided an excellent service when delivering all the boxes to my house. He even went above and beyond and took the time to write some instructions on the assembly. I was very satisfied with his service. I would recommend his company to all my friends. I also placed an order on the IKEA website, and it was a nightmare!! IKEA was horrible customer service and they rely on outsource delivery companies which provide and very poor service.

We saw some mold in a basement closet area. We called a few people, but AdvantaClean was the first to respond after looking at Home Advisor...thank goodness. They did a free estimate as well as others, but Mike (fully certified) had enough experience to discover, show, and explain how extensive the mold problem was. Him and his partner took care of it the following week, under time and under the estimated cost. They were amazingly friendly and easy to work with. They explained everything and left us with some cleaning solution as well. I would highly recommend these guys!

I highly recommend Rainbow International! Our egress window well filled with 4 ft of water before giving way during a flash flood. My basement was soaked from one end of the house to the other. One can only imagine how horrible it was to find your home in ruins and nothing being covered by insurance. I spent about 2 hours reading through reviews on companies that specialized in flooded homes and it only added to my stress level. I used Thumbtack to solicit help and selected three water mitigators to provide an estimate; all of which had had pretty great reviews. Hands down, Rainbow International gave me the best first impression. They were sympathetic, professional, and on time! Being on time doesn't seem like a big deal to some but when you are talking about mold prevention, professionalism and my thousands of dollars being spent, it is very important. Not only were they on time but they were the first to submit their estimate...some of the other companies took 48 hours after they said they would submit one. Trust me people...when water is in your basement, you want it dried out as fast as possible! Being that these other companies are water mitigating companies I was pretty surprised that they were taking their sweet time. I feel I need to mention that it is pretty expensive to dry out a flooded basement. Like really expensive and it only added to my panic-mania mental state that I was in. That being said, Dave was so understanding and amazing and let me know upfront all of the things that my husband and I could do to save on a lot of the expenses. So yea, that was a lot of work on our part but we are not "well off" and were already out thousands of dollars on furniture, flooring, window, drywall replacement, etc....so of course we were going to do as much of the labor and clean-up as possible in order to save some money. Dave, his co-worker Robert and also his wife (also business associate) came by every day. They shared their moisture reading levels with me, removed fans that weren't required because of the drying progress (saving me even more money) and were always upfront with their expectations and the work being done. They took there time to meet each of my children, my dog and the dogs we were babysitting. Probably the one thing that stuck out most to me is that on the second day, they were saying my children's name or pets name if they saw them...I couldn't believe they had actually remembered my kiddos and pets names. Very cool. I was so appreciative of all their hard and honest work that I even baked some fall treats for them to take on the road with them. Seriously though, this company and its employees made the best out of a horrible situation. If you are reading this it's because you are most likely experiencing one of those situations right now...do yourself a favor and call this company!

Justin was very professional, prompt, and respectful of our home. He did quality work in our bathroom and was very knowledgeable when making suggestions for the remodel and even built us a custom linen closet. He gave great attention to detail and made sure everything was done to our satisfaction. We are very pleased with the project and would not hesitate to hire him again.

We have been using United Services for the past three years and have been extremely satisfied with the service, quality of products, pricing and customer service. Our latest home improvement, the exterior of our home, was updated with James Hardy siding, 6 inch gutters, painting, roof and exterior doors. The service we received from Mark Passer and his crews was outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied, made adjustments when required and ensured we were keep up-to-date as the project progressed. We have no hesitation in recommending United Services Home Improvements for all your home projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
