Regina was very professional, explained products and made sure every child had their face painted. She even went over a few minutes than the allotted time. The work was amazing and the kids loved it. Definitely recommend her. Only thing is she is one person so 2 hours for 9 kids was not enough I wished I booked for 3 hours. So anyone in the future booking time, keep in mind of the kids and time it takes to tattoo/ face paint!

Chelsey did an AMAZING job at our wedding, both kids and adults got awesome and age-appropriate face painting (kids - lots of really cute animal face painting; my nephew went back a second time to get his hand painted as paws after getting himself done up as a tiger and Chelsey totally obliged; adults - lovely whimsical feathery and flowery face paints, one glitter blue mustache with cat whiskers). We'd totally recommend her, she was great!

Maria is incredibly talented and uses only professional materials. It is amazing to watch her create such intricate designs by hand so quickly, and she provides excellent education on henna care as well to make it last. She is well adapted to both traditional Middle Eastern and Eastern designs, but can also offer such varieties as steampunk, tribal, pagan, and much, much more. She's done henna for me many times, and every time I come away feeling so beautiful!

Gina painted the faces of my little guests at my twin boys 3rd birthday party on April 18th, 2015. Everyone at the event raved about her talent. I enjoyed her professionalism, flexibility, patience, and ability to work so well with little toddlers. She came to the party prepared with her equipment, found a work area, and immediately started painting. Her talent is undeniable. We captured photos of her at work and it was wonderful to see how much she seemed to enjoy working with the kids. Her presence at the event surely made it that much more special. I'm sure we will work again at some point. There will be many more parties in the future. Very satisfied with her work. Gloria G.

I had a non traditional henna tattoo request to "decorate" a 12 in scar that runs down the front of my leg. I didn't want anything really heavy, just something airy for the summer. Sonal did a great job and I was quite pleased, but it was one of those horrible hot humid days and the plastic wrap that on the design to protect it caused the henna to melt and bleed on the way home. Although I removed it once I got there, the top part of the design became much heavier and obscure. Not her fault, rather the weather. I would definitely go back.

I take inspiration from everywhere, as most artists do, however, I have yet to see any other artist who interprets quite like me. I have a definite style of drawing/design, but realism with a twist of surrealism and the grotesque is the categories I most likely fall into. I can imitate any style desired, though, should mine not be desired.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

  • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
  • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
  • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
  • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
  • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
