Obed and his team are experts at what they do. They were able to clean out our backyard, front yard, side yard all in one go with ease. They even cleaned up the Boston ivy that was creeping all over our yard. Attention to detail and getting the job done right is something that Obed knows. I'd hire him again on the future (I've already planned on it!).

I asked Sam to help in building a lego/crafting desk in the basement for our family. He happily took on the project and did an outstanding job in not only building the desk but providing great feedback and changes to the design that helped create the beautiful and stable desk we have now. He also installed a new drop light and electrical outlet in the same room for us that came out great. I would highly recommend him for any project. He is honest and very trustworthy with his work and a great communicator.

I cannot say enough about what a pleasure it was to work with Anibal and his exceptional crew. He exceeded every expectation that I had in terms of quality, increasing the size of his crew to finish earlier than he originally quoted, not nickel dimming me when it came to small changes that were made, and perhaps most valuable, demonstrating a keen sense of design to match His craft. It is rare these days to find trades people who care as much as Anibal does when it comes to satisfying his customer. I look forward to working with Anibal on future landscaping projects. A joy to work with

I just want to thank Mike Theodore of Septic Designs of NH for their excellent response time in taking care of my customers when I need them. I am the owner of Snedeker Plumbing and Heating. I feel as though Mike and his crew are part of my team. It's important for me to be able to refer my clients to Mike knowing they will receive quality work at a fair price.

Having recently moved into a beautiful home, we were unable to keep up with the yard maintenance with our new little bundle of joy. Al came in and completely transformed our backyard from the jungle it was, to our new oasis...and he did it all with a smile. Great guy who does great work at a great price!

We hired Magnolia Siteworks to create a new entry walkway to our front door. Brent was responsive and professional. The craftsmanship is exceptional and the walkway looks fantastic. He and his crew completed the job despite some rough weather conditions. We couldn’t be happier. We look forward to seeing his plans for the next phase of our front landscaping design!

Keegan is committed to professional excellence and meets the desired landscaping goals of the home owner. He was able to make our vision a reality. We have a sloping backyard that required knowledge of water drainage, methods of addressing problem, ability to attractively landscape the land to fit the style of our home. We are extremely pleased with the finished project and clean up! We have already hired AK Properties for regular maintenance of entire property.A+ rating

Jeremias did a great job on my backyard. My backyard was a mess and he needed to take down some old structures and completely redo the lawn. He also installed sprinklers for a good price. Importantly, he was thoughtful and tried to figure out ways to make our project into what we were envisioning. He did a fantastic job on my fence and I’ve gotten multiple people asking me who did it for me. I had talked to a half dozen fence people and none of them could execute what we had in mind. Also, he is always on time and on schedule which I appreciate.

John and his team did an outstanding job taking out my backyard pond. The job was started immediately and they worked each day till it was completed. The completed job looks excellent and was done with high quality. He would check in with me each day and let me know how it was coming along. John’s Landscaping is efficient and thorough. They even made sure they cleaned up everything when they left. I would highly recommend them for services.

I recently asked Al to plow my Mothers driveway. My Mother is handicapped and has health aids who come daily. She started having radiation treatments every morning and has to be out by a certain time. He has been early every time! Making sure the driveway is clear, her wheelchair ramp is clear, salted and sanded so no one falls. I live too far away and it’s such a relief to know that she is taken care of and she doesn’t have to worry about being able to get out when we have a snow storm. It is challenging enough. Thank you so much Al! Your service is impeccable and very much appreciated! Beth Davis, Roxbury, ME

My yard has been transformed to a beautiful obstacle course for my 4yr old son, and an oasis for my wife and me. Can't beat the sound of the waterfall. We do a lot more entertaining and relaxing in our new backyard. My wife and I are now contemplating an out door kitchen & pergola now.

I had a 18ft.x22ft. patio installed in my backyard along with an extended walkway to the house. It was essential for my family to have this so we could spend time/eat meals together outside. Although, it took 2 days longer than anticipated, my family and I are very pleased with the work.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
