I heard from the owner, Mark, very shortly after I posted on Thumbtack. I needed a new heating and cooling system installed, and he responded so quickly and was able to come out the next day to give me a quote. He was even able to fit me in the following week, and my new AC has been a lifesaver. The whole time he was communicative and Jason, the main installer, was awesome. Super friendly, professional, tidy with the work- everything I was hoping for. Highly recommended.

Very hard to find workers like these. They upgraded my Stove heating system from ages ago to a highly efficient furnace, I couldn’t belive how much money I’m saving on gas now! If you need someone who can do the Job Atmosphere HVAC is who you call. Top of the line service, I’m very confident I will not be calling other companies to do my jobs.

The job at hand was to do a furnace clean/tune up and schedule an A/C cleaning and tune up. 3 Brothers Mechanical arrived at the exact time we agreed on. The technician was very polite. He answered all of my questions and made it clear to me he had vast knowledge in his trade. In the big picture I wanted a company to maintain my furnace and central A/C. I ended up with a maintenance and service agreement that I am satisfied and very comfortable with.

Jeremy and crew removed an OLD steam boiler and hot water tank and replaced with baseboard heat run off of a combi boiler. Jeremy is a very nice guy and so was his entire crew. The work was done for a fair price and overall with very high quality. I am a tough reviewer, so for me a 4 star is like most peoples 5 stars... but I'm knocking off a star based on 3 factors... timeliness, proactive communication and poor carpentry. The project dragged on a good bit longer than expected (not a huge issue since it was vacant and not needed... but still, you like a job to move along and just get completed). The proactive communication is related to the job dragging on. The crew wouldn't be there and work wasn't being done at times and I wasn't informed ahead of time as to why. Too often I had to text Jeremy to get an update (again, not a tragedy, but it's so much nicer if you are just kept informed without having to check in.) Last one is that they had to cut openings in a cabinet in the kitchen and in the kitchen floor for a gas pipe. This was done very sloppily. Granted, they aren't carpenters and these aren't highly visible spaces, but the work was messy and could have been done with much greater care. Overall, though, Jeremy is a great guy, his work on the heating system was first rate and the price he charged for the work was very fair. I absolutely recommend him and would hire him again.

Valentin did an amazing job installing the a/c and central heating for my house. He went above and beyond to make sure that the cost stayed low and his attention to detail was phenomenal. He was punctual and made sure that I knew what to expect. On top of that, he made sure that my personal items/furniture were covered if they might be near/close to where he was working and cleaned up after he was done! Would definitely hire him again and recommend him to all my friends!

Zibby installed my Ecosmart 27KW electric tankless water heater. The work was done professionally and within the estimated time-frame. He also removed superfluous copper from the previous boiler-only water heating system. The boiler had a loose gasket that was exposed after the work and Zibby had no problem fixing it free-of-charge shortly after the initial work was done. Definitely recommend. Oh, he also boosted my well water pressure for no additional charge.

Great customer service and even better technical work. Trouble shot my central AC outdoor unit for me. Explained everything that he was doing and made it perfectly clear to me what it would take to correct the short cycling issue. even took the time to run me through the indoor portion of my system. I am a first time home buyer and to have a trusted tech is huge. I'll never call anyone else to work on my home heating/ac. Would recommend Northeast to anyone that needs this type of service.

Dave was willing to work with me in designing my heating system. A lot of heating companies did not want to work outside the box and install my new Caddy wood furnace. Dave was not afraid to learn about this new system and help me correctly install it. He went beyond the call of duty. I would definitely recommend him.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
