Steve was very professional and really took our considerations into mind. His quote was by far the most reasonable and he even did additional work for us. We love how our family and dining rooms look now that Steve has painted them for us.

One thing that is wonderful about Donald is that he communicates very well and arrives when he says he will arrive, which is rare for contractors in my experience. I had him skim coat and paint several ceilings, which came out beautifully. His was here for a second day to paint. And while they were very professional and nice to deal with, I was not as happy with the work as I was when Donald was here. They seemed rushed, and one small section of the bathroom did not get painted at all. I also had quite a bit of cleanup to do. But overall, I think what I got was a good value. I would definitely recommend him for ceiling work. He worked a few miracles in that regard for me.

Gerry is awesome awesome awesome- professional, friendly, punctual, trustworthy, personable, reasonable, hard working, attentive to the client, and plain good person. He helped me paint my new place ( 3000 sq feet)...came out to see the property, gave a reasonable quote in a timely manner, met with me prior to the start of project, accommodated the paint brand and kinds I preferred, always with a smile, and met his deadline early. He left the place spotless and walked the property with me at the end to make sure I was content. Let’s put it this way- I’m not the kind of person who writes reviews, but I felt that his hard and quality work deserves recognition... sincerely, the whole process was so seamless that it puts a smile on my face. I’d hire him again in a heartbeat.

I hired Northeast Construction Group to paint kitchen cabinets. The cabinets came out beautiful with lacquer finish. They look like factory finish. Project finished on time with no delays. Highly recommend and I will likely use again.

We couldn’t be happier with the work that Alpha Painting did. We were moving into a condominium downsizing from another state and moved into a condo that needed to be freshened up with new paint. We had a one-week window where the condominium was empty and we could take advantage of having it painted. It was a holiday weekend but Chris from Alpha Paint said he would get the job done in three days. He and his team worked from early morning till evening over the holiday weekend and did a fantastic job. It was great value for the cost of the job and we would highly recommend anyone who needs painting done to contact Chris and the Alpha painting team. They were meticulous with each aspect of the job, from preparation, repair of seams and small nail holes through cleanup. We couldn’t be any happier

I am a client of CertaPro, and Tom and Pernell patched my kitchen ceiling and computer room ceiling as a result of water damage done during the 2015 snowstorms and resulting ice dams. They came back about a week later and glued panels onto the cabinets and painted not only the ceilings in the two rooms with water damage, but also the living room and hallway because they were all interconnected and needed to be all the same color paint. Everything went well in record time. They cleaned up drop cloths, etc. and left the house in good order. As far as any suggestions of doing something better, I can't think of anything that wasn't considered to complete a perfect job. If I had to do the same job myself, not only would the house be a mess, but it would have taken me at least two weeks longer and ended up with paint on the floors, carpet, curtains, and anything not completely covered. I would highly recommend these gentlemen for any future projects of a similar nature, and tell all my friends by word-of-mouth how skilled and professional their work ethics were performed.

We hired this crew to do a big drywall job, which we were very happy with. Because that went so well, we hired them to paint two 1,100 sqft 3br apartments in an old house. They were super fast, very reliable, friendly, trustworthy, and the finished product is beautiful. These guys are now our go-to painters!

I have a modified Cape Cod style home and asked JWD Painting to paint the outside of my home and a wrap around deck. They put two coats of paint on everything and they did it well. They worked quickly, professionally and cleaned up after themselves daily. The price was agreed on and there were no surprises. I recommend them to anyone who wants a professional job done at a very good price!

I don't usually write reviews, but I honestly felt that I needed to get the word out about D.C. Painting. This company was such a great find. They went above and beyond literally all of my expectations. I love my house, it is my pride and joy, so I am very, very picky about what contractors I use. I am so impressed with the impeccable quality and professionalism of this company. From the very first meeting through the entire process, and all the way to the end product, it was so easy and just a pleasure to work with them. It's amazing what a great paint job can do for your home! These guys are really good at what they do, they are punctual, neat and to be honest, really reasonably priced. I plan to use them for any of my other painting needs. I highly recommend them! You won't be disappointed. :)

Mark and his crew were awesome and very thorough, loved the way the room was painted. We were very pleased with his work, and can't wait for him to paint our bedroom and hall. Mark was very accommodating , since we only wanted one large room painted he was able to work around his schedule to fit us in. Would highly recommend Mark in a heart beat...

Gary at Mainepaintworks did a wonderful job painting our home. He came to our house to give us a quote within 2 days of our inquiry and was available to paint the next week. He painted our downstairs in one full day. He also offered to patch holes in the wall. He is professional, responsive, timely and offered a great rate. We are very happy with the paint job and his service. We will not hesitate to hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
