Outstanding contractor. Punctual, intelligent, efficient, with an eye for detail while trying to make things better. And, he's funny. Tempted not to leave a review because we need him to be available for more projects. Hire him, he's good.

Gerry and his brother Mike have done an excellent job at our home last week. We had to address water leaks and rusted waterlines in three toilets. Gerry communicated well about the project, estimation, parts and pricing. Gerry listened to everything I had to say about the plumbing issues in our home and gave me ideas and options to fix the issue with appropriate parts. He allowed me to buy the parts myself. On the day of the install, Gerry and his brother took extra care to do the project with best quality and spent time to make sure that there are no more water leaks in our pipes after the work. Mike installed two water hammers for the washing machine by doing some copper pipe work and tested well after the installation to ensure that the washer is working fine and there is no more sounds coming from the pipes. Mike also helped us to stabilize the washer by adjusting the leveling screws. They used necessary accessories to keep the workplace clean and after the project, left no trace of any residue. Upon my request, they wore booties to avoid walking with boots on our carpets. I greatly appreciate their professional work ethic and quality of work. I strongly recommend them for any plumbing work in your home based on what I saw. It is rare to find quality contractors. When you do find one support them. All the best and have a great day. -Satheesh Donthy, Chelmsford, MA 01824

Ryan did a construction debris clean-up for me. He met me within 24hrs of contacting him and under-bid other contractors by a significant margin. He was back a couple days later and was quick and thorough about getting the job done. Thanks Ryan!

I was in need of a knowledgeable contractor (carpenter) that could deal with some siding and roof line issues that were causing siding to rot and corner boards to rot. I have had some bad experiences in the past with contractors so I always go into this process with worries whether I have made a good choice? Gilbert having the wealth of experience that he does worked my small job into his busy schedule and took care of my issues and treated my house as though he was going to live there. He is attentive, very professional with an eye for detail and listens to the concerns the home owner has and explains where he believes the repair should go to make it right. He was genuinely a very easy person to talk to and he took your suggestions seriously. I am very satisfied with the work he has done for me and will definitely be using him on my next projects. You would be hard pressed to find someone as experienced, professional, and concerned that what he is doing will be right. Gilbert is the real deal! Thanks Gilbert look forward to working with you on our next projects.

Galeforce remodeled our main bathroom -put in a new bathtub/shower, vanity, & toilet as well as tiling the vanity area and floor. Their work was perfection - we love our new bathroom! If we had met them earlier - we would have saved time and money on other projects. Vinnie instinctively knows what the cause of a problem is. Our basement had a water leak which was causing a mold issue and he knew right where to look. Years ago a nail had punctured a sewer pipe. He fixed it, replaced the molded wood, and replaced & patched the drywall. We couldn't be happier and would recommend Galeforce to anyone one looking for excellent work, honesty, fair prices, and that step above the rest!

Joe was a pleasure to work with. Not only was the quality of the work high caliber we had one of those mini-disasters with the job that occur from time to time when working on home projects where my boiler died and a simple plumbing job cost 3X more than we had budgeted for. Rather than billing me the additional cost we worked together and discussed a fair place for him and his team to pass the work over to me for finishing. The end result came out great, and I couldn't be more pleased with the flexibility in our original work plan. He really goes the extra mile to work with his customers and I would definitely hire him again.

Brent transformed our driveway from being a rugged riverbed of a logging road into something that you would expect to see as a roadway thru a National Park! The quality of the materials he used, based on his know how and experience, was outstanding. We've had several favorable comments on it from people who where familiar with the way it used to be. We have had a few experiences recently with various contractors, and none where as favorable as that with Brent. If you want the job done right, most economically, and aesthetically pleasing, do no hesitate to give this man the opportunity to review and discuss your project. Thank you, Brent!

Steve was quick to respond and was able to work around my schedule to fit me in. He was courteous, respectful, and clean. Most contractors walk into your house and make a mess, but he went the extra mile to make sure my work area was left spotless with no issues. Will definitely hire again if needed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
