It was a pleasure to do business with Tony. He was quick to respond and do the actual work. He gave me peace of mind while he went to my rental unit and met with my tenant. His quote was accurate before he did the work, once there he stuck to his original quote and he made it simple to get payment to him. I will definitely hire him again for my plumbing needs. Sincerely, Kate

I hired ADAD to install 4 replacement windows in my home. The windows were custom made so there was a bit of a wait but Mr. Dever made sure that I was kept updated. The price was reasonable compared to other quotes I received, and the windows are now installed and they look great. A+

Daniel Johnson came in and removed a chimney from a long-gone wood stove, took down the huge brick surround and patched the roof, the attic and the living room ceiling. He worked around our schedule, charged an incredibly good rate and even took away all of the brick, cinder block and mortar that he took down. He's painting the ceiling and then we're going to plan the next project, a bathtub and tile work! He is the best!

I hired Thomas to do a floor to ceiling custom built in with a window seat. I had provided incorrect measurements originally but he did an onsite visit prior to beginning his work and was able to adjust all measurements accordingly and make a gorgeous built in piece of furniture. We realized that he was more adept to handle many of our projects that we had hired other contractors do so we hired him to do additional work and to redo some work that had already been done. He stuck to the schedule that we set forth, was great at communicating, was extremely helpful at assessing situations and providing recommendations. We are very grateful and appreciative for the work that he did on the built in, our cabinet installation our vinyl floor installation, and many other small things around the house! Thanks to Thomas many aspects of our home will be wonderful. If you would like a verbal testimony please feel free to ask Thomas for my number. Once everything is done I hope to come back and add some more photos.

Mark (owner) has done several roof and siding jobs for me, but he has a genius for finding simple solutions to those one-of-a-kind problems and projects that you just can't figure out. I've explained problems to 4 or 5 contractors or handymen, who have to think about it so long it never happens. Mark always has an instantaneous and inexpensive idea that works. One trip to Home Depot and done. Examples of solutions: directing ambient heat from the furnace room into other spaces (about $45 in materials); diverting water with odd drainage routes around the house (under $20 materials); building a quick vine support in the garden (about $35); and so on. He works until the work is done -- sometimes finishing in the dark wearing a headlamp -- and he cleans up after himself. I first hired him for roof and siding, but now rely on him for all kinds of jobs, large and small.

The job has held up for two years now. I had the repair done 4 times already by people who claimed to know what they were doing. But, the mason kept cracking and needing more repair. TAF fixed it for good it seems.

Kevin built a custom shelf in an existing opening above a gas fireplace as the space would not accommodate our 50 inch TV. The results were much more than expected! Kevin built a beautiful shelf/mantel that looks like it was original to the space. Kevin was friendly, professional, courteous, fairly priced and completed the project in a timely manner. We would recommend him without hesitation.

Joe was amazing! First of all, he responded to my request right away to replace my kitchen faucet. I was very impressed by his knowledge and professionalism. Then, I was surprised by how quickly he was able to do the work. He would have come later on the same day, but I was not available so we scheduled it for the following day in the morning. He arrived promptly at the time we set up and he came prepared to complete the job with the new kitchen faucet that I selected in hand. He was very courteous and friendly and I was able to tell that he takes great pride in his workmanship. If you want quality work done at a very reasonable price, I highly recommend him and I will utilize his services from now on. It is very rare these days to find a contractor that is responsive and cares about the quality of his work.

We have a pre-war dining chair, hardwood of some kind, and after a rumble with a visiting dog + a child (neither ours), one arm was sadly snapped off. Google led me to Thumbtack, Thumbtack to Michael Matos. Michael was extraordinary at sticking with the dull administrative details of scheduling, file-sharing (jpegs of the damage) and emailing, and just plain old time-management. He arrived at our home on time to survey the job in 3-d, gave me a sound and confident estimate, and was ready to take the chair with him. Delivery of our repaired chair was within the time frame we were given at the start of the job, and it met my expectations for the repair. I have high expectations and am always surprised when they are met. This was an outstanding job in the woodworking studio, as well as on the phone, in the ledger, by the clock. When Michael delivered the chair, I asked my equally-exacting daughter to take a look. She could not tell the difference between the repaired arm & the other, as when she pointed to the wrong arm & said, "Is it this one?" We have a lot of nice things made of wood, and surely any of them will need their time being repaired, so I am very pleased to have made the professional acquaintance of Michael Matos.

Will did an excellent job with helping to remodel my closet. I needed him to remove some pieces of old shelving comma paint the closet, and hang new custom shelving. He was very professional and came after hours to work on my project. He either showed up on time or let me know if he was running late. I plan to use him for future projects around the house.

My new home needed repairs. All outside work. I knew an overabundance of patients would be required. Especially with winter coming. I have never hired a general contractor before. As a journeyman machinist I have worked for enough master craftsman to tell who is reputable. John is highly knowledgeable, polite, and thorough. He helped me determine the scope of the project and tailored it to meet my needs and budget. I knew I was paying for a finished project at a fixed price. How John allocated his time and resources didn’t concern me. He kept me informed of deliveries and when the next phase of the project would begin. I am very pleased with the work he has done and would recommend him to anyone. And look forward to working with him again.

Christine arrived with the perfect sample of color as requested. I went with a gray, metallic faux finish on my kitchen cabinets .She was professional and knew her stuff. She arrived on time, set to work and cleaned up the area each night before she left. She kept in constant communication and worked hard to meet and exceed my expectations in the time frame set. She had the perfect way of knowing exactly the picture in my head and was able to achieve it. She even agreed to come back to match the trim and do touch-ups free for 1 year. I think anyone who wants to explore dramatic changes to kitchen or staircase, this is person of choice. Highly professional and knows what women want!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
