Tony was very prompt in responding to my issue. This was for a rental unit and he very thoroughly explained the options and alternatives over the phone so that I did not have to make a special trip to the property to meet him and was able to handle everything over the phone. His prices were very reasonable and he completed the job in very efficient and timely manner. I would highly recommend him for any of your plumbing needs.

I found "thumbtack" on a TV commercial. Great response time and fair diagnostic over the phone with Josh after I had sent some pictures. Easy to schedule with Stacey. Peter came the next day early AM on time and got right to work and promptly fixed the problem we were having, which was to reattach our kitchen sink to the granite countertop and replace/repair the drainage pipes under it, along with making sure our "stupid-fancy" faucet worked properly and the garbage disposal was not compromised. Of note, my annual service contract with a Major residential plumbing service would not touch the sink reattachment issue! I would recommend and use SBS anytime.

Mark was great. He replaced the original light fixture on a house that's almost 100 years old. The work was challenging with old electric wiring. The new chandelier looks great. His price was very fair. I already have other jobs in mind for him. I highly recommend.

Normally i don't write reviews, but in this case, i want to inform people about how happy i am with my choice to go with Sam of Advance Heating and Air, for total HVAC system, He truly enjoys his craft, and is proud (and should be) of his work, I was offered by a bigger company a smaller system at 4 to $5000 more, and of course the salesman tries to turn you away from local guys saying they cant do the same type work, I put my trust in Sam and his way better product and offer, and couldn't be happier, he has earned all my future business in that field, If you are in the need for any air, heat or plumbing needs, do yourself a favor and talk with Sam, he will take care of you, and like me, at a price you will be pleased with.

Don came to take a look at my washer problem very quickly. He determined that the machine needed a new motor. He advised me to buy a new unit since the washer is 14 years old and would not be worth the repair. He also measured my space and, during a follow up call, he answered a few questions which were extremely helpful in purchasing a new washer. He did not charge me for the visit or the advice. I will hire him right away as soon as I have an electrical or plumbing problem. I highly recommend hiring this knowledgable man and his company. Thank you, Dan

Zack actually replaced my sump pump. I contacted him and he gave me a quote over the internet (which he would stand behind) but I told him I prefer that he come and look at what I had just to alleviate any surprises. He was happy to do so. He arrived on time and was very knowledgeable personable, kind, and considerate of my work schedule and provided me with more than just one option to do the job. He quoted me a fair price to do the job that I wanted him to do and his price included the sump pump with water pressure backup, new piping, all parts and his labor. The sump pump that he used was one of the best in the line of sump pumps on the market which gave me a great feeling to know that he was using quality products. Zack arrived today to do the job. He was on time and his warm and caring personality were right there with him. He finished the job in about 2 hours and he took the old sump pump and all its belongings with him to discard. He made it a point to explain the operation of the new water pressure backup sump pump so that I understood this new system. He left the area clean and tidy. I asked him if I could contact him again as my "go to guy" for plumbing issues and he smiled and said "of course"....This guy knows his stuff and his work is better than the best. An honest young guy earning a living and caring about his work and the people he services. He's a keeper...Hire Zack

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
