How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Do electricians offer remote or virtual services?

While electrical work is typically performed in person, you may come across some electrician profiles that state the pro is offering remote services. If you do, contact local electricians to discuss your particular project and what type of remote services they may offer.

Just a fantastic experience from start to finish. Spase installed three lights in our kitchen, and not only was he quick, efficient and clean, he had so much insight to offer in terms of types of bulbs to use and dimmers. I will be recommending him to anyone looking for a skilled electrician, and use him for all our future lighting and electric needs.

Lazor reached out to us when I asked for a quote initially for to replace four canned lights in our living room with LEDs. We agreed on a price, but, it took several nudges to get them to agree on a date/time for service. I confirmed the date/time with them the day before, but then day of, they never showed, and only responded after I messaged them asking for an update that there was traffic and that's why they couldn't make it. While it's fine that things like that happen, all I asked for was an update, which we were never given, nor were we given any sort of apology for missing the appointment. What we did get were a lot of excuses and this message: Unfortunately traffic is unpredictable, and this has happened to us on few occasions out of thousands of calls. In addition, as I'm sure you're aware, Hoboken is extremely difficult to drive through let alone find parking. I think we've provided appropriate communication, but we also don't control Thumbtack. In addition, I don't know of any licensed or insured electricians who would drive an hour and a half each way for $125.00, less the $75.00 Thumbtack charge. Lastly, we reached out to you as no other electricians had responded at the time. That was our initiative to do so. It sounds like we aren't the right electricians for you. Thank you for considering us. So they put the entire blame on us, took no responsibility for their error, made thumbtack seem like it's hard to communicate through (it sends text alerts to your phone when you're messaged), made up that they were the only electricians who responded (they were not), and then refused service. Surprisingly poor service from a company with so many 5-star reviews.

Spase did an incredible job for us and was very reasonably priced. He will be our go to electrician and even our first point of contact for our building management. He is very knowledgeable and takes his time to make sure everything is installed correctly and looks beautiful. Very easy to get in contact with and a very friendly guy. I strongly recommend Spase for any electrical work at all. You will not be disappointed!

Great service. He came and fixed our problem fast efficiently. Installed 5 light fixtures and fixed a shorted circuit. Mind you, we have old wiring in our building (from 100 years ago) and couldn't find an electrician to tackle the job. Jetco executed the job flawlessly and didn't kill us on the price. I would recommend his service to anyone and I hope to hire him for more projects in the future.

Dave is the real deal. His quality of work is excellent, he is prompt, fair and high quality. I had 5 installs to do which due to his quality and service is now 11 installs he will complete next week. Yes I already rehired him. He works hard and gets it done the right way. No cutting corners or rushing Had an issue with the light. He took it back down fixed the issue and reinstalled to make it perfect. I watched his wiring and mounting installs and he’s by the book. It’s done right and tested. Simply he’s a 5* thumbtacker and electrician. Located in Hoboken so he services NJ also. For reference my hallway light at 14’ up, not an easy install but it was done right (he even offered to polish it but we had other stuff to get to)
