  • Justus Prep - SAT/ACT/College App & Essay

    (32 reviews)

Because I've tutored for so long and know the SAT and how to teach it to students with varying ability, I can quickly devise an individualized plan of study for each student and tailor the exercises to improve weak areas and bring up test scores. I also use computer software that analyzes the types of questions a particular student gets wrong, the difficulty levels of the questions, the time it takes for the student to answer each question, among other things. It's actually a very helpful software. I've taught with it and without it, and it's apparent that when I use the software, I diagnose weaknesses more accurately and efficiently. Not only does it pinpoint the problem areas, it saves a lot of time. I most enjoy the relationships I get to build with my students during our sessions. Although the tutoring sessions consist mostly of instruction and practice, I oftentimes get a chance to talk about life/future goals, and I try to encourage all of my students to work hard and to do the hard things now, believing that one day, the hard work will pay off. I also love hearing from my students about their actual SAT scores. It's a great feeling when I receive a call or text from one of my students telling me that he/she broke 2000, or got a 12 on the essay, or a perfect score on one section. I'm sure the student feels satisfied, but I get to participate in and enjoy their accomplishments as well.

My results speak for themselves. My average SAT Student increases his/her score by over 500 points; no one else can make such a claim. I achieve the same results for ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, and DAT students. While there will always be good Instructors out there, it is the results I achieve that make people utilize my services. Helping change students' lives by helping them achieve scores that open up doors of opportunity to them that they never dreamed possible.

  • Take Note Lessons

    (21 reviews)

I am a full-time professional tutor with over a decade of experience. Many people teach the SAT and ACT as part-time work. I have my own company and teach students standardized tests every day. My teachers and I keep the lessons fun and engaging. I personally hire all of my instructors. We are a small company with an excellent track record. I have a unique curriculum that is a mix of old and new teaching methods. I have been chosen as a top Thumbtack professional for two years in a row. Our students have raised their scores as much as 500 points on the SAT. On the ACT, we have had students increase their scores as much as 10 points in a single section. Our students have been accepted to top schools including Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania. I enjoy the relationships I develop with families. I particularly enjoy the sense of accomplishment that I get when students achieve their academic and personal goals. There is nothing I like better than hearing that one of my students has been accepted to his or her top choice school. I work hard to help the majority of my students achieve this.

  • Jim Treadway Tutoring

    (13 reviews)

I'm a Personality Type expert in addition to a teacher/tutor, so I'm uniquely attuned to the different thinking, testtaking, and interpersonal styles of each student. I have experience (and excellent reviews) teaching people both one-on-one and in small classes (2-6 people), mid-size and large classes (up to as many as 35 students in a room). I love the art and science of managing a fun but productive one-on-one or classroom-wide learning experience. I thrive at explaining things simply (step - by step - by step - by step...), and doing so vividly. Patience comes easily to me, too. I plan our work in depth, in advance: from short-term to mid-term and long-term goals, to going through your mock exams problem by problem to find the very specific errors you might be making, to sending you follow-up emails after each lesson so that you can be sure of exactly what we're accomplishing, when, and where that leaves us on track to our over-arching objective. I also hone in on the "lowest hanging fruits" of each test - the easiest areas to boost your score - be they content knowledge like grammar or plane geometry, or specific strategies like how to approach a Reading passage - and I really focus on those parts, so your score can jump. like to put these tests in a broader perspective: of learning how to learn, how to identify and admit to what you don't know, how to find specific ways of practicing those tangible skills, how to take a big scary problem and break it down into each of its tiniest component parts (doing each one, THEN worrying about what the next step will be), and how to make work a constant but not-oversized part of your life, so that achievement and pride and confidence become constants in your life. Connecting with students; the thrill of progress; learning about learning; learning about teaching.

  • William Taylor-Suderman

    (1 reviews)

After having taught master classes of more than 200 students in the classroom, I now want to focus on the one to one work that can be done in private tutoring. Not only am I getting to know how good or bad your skills are, I am getting to know how you study, what you like, what you don't like. I get a thrill watching one student make progress each week, each hour, even if sometimes it looks like nothing is happening, there is because from the outside I can see what you have learned and the progress you have made. With one on one tutoring, I treat each person as an individual and not a mass production of a class. I love the one on one teaching-learning experience. I feel as if I am tending to a special plant, water, nutrients, soil, care and I get to see the student grow as a student taking a test for school reasons or career reasons but also get to see the person grow as a human being who is being nurtured and helped out because or spite of, the good traits and the bad habits that make us who we are. There should be a special relation that takes place between the student and the goal and to try to get both hooked together. I tutor for languages, tests, exams and so on but I tutor someone who is human and can grow in different ways and improve their lives. That is my reward because at the end of the day, I am the one who is learning about you and from you as well.

    Private tutor

Are you looking for a tutor in NYC with years of experience in simplifying math concepts, in a simple, easy-to-understand manner? Throughout my studies as a student, I have found ways to make math easier to learn. My clients consider me as the best tutor that they have ever had, because I can turn a difficult-to-understand concept into one that is much more manageable, and even fun! What can/do I tutor? (exams and subjects) I tutor in algebra, geometry and trigonometry, all at a high school or lower level. Exams include math sections of SAT, ACT, COOP, GRE, GMAT, ASVAB, SSAT and virtually any math section in any middle or high school exam. Integrated Algebra Regents, Geometry Regents, Trigonometry Regents exams are my specialty as well. What is your experience working with students? I've tutored students from Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens neighborhoods. I worked/am working with students from elite public high schools like Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Stuyvesant, and Lehman College. And I worked/am familiar with private school curriculum of the following schools: Anglo-American, Browning, Calhoun, Collegiate, Columbia Prep, Dalton, Dwight, Fieldston, Friends, Horace Mann, Hewitt, Little Red Schoolhouse, Ramaz, and Trinity. I have worked with students on math courses, but I also tutor science courses like chemistry and physics as well. Where? Generally, my clients request in-home tutoring service, and I find this option the best. The alternative would be the library or a nearby coffee shop. I can travel to virtually any location in Manhattan, and have/had previous clientele on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown, and Downtown. Availability: I generally have a flexible schedule throughout the year. Depending on the client's preference, I am generally able to accommodate their time needs. Weekends and weeknights are generally best. Pricing: My price ranges from $60 to $70 an hour. Each session is two hours in length. References: Plenty of references from past and current students are available upon request! Please speak with me directly to obtain references. Thank you. Can you speak with me to determine whether you would be the right tutor for my child? Absolutely, and I would love to! A free consultation of about 15 minutes by phone is recommended, so I can get to know the parent and the child's specific needs. Are you ready to talk after you have screened my ad? You may call anytime, but please leave a message if I am unable to answer. I am generally unable to answer during the sessions, so please leave your full name/contact number, and I respond to all inquiries on the same or next business day. Thank you! Testimonials: "Mag wanted me to let you know how she did on her Regent exams: 92 on bio and 88 on geometry! The bio regent grade helped bring up her average in the class to a 90, so she is very pleased! Thank you again for all your hard work!" "I got a 90 on the chem regents! I just wanted to let you know and thank you; that's exactly what i was aiming for, but even I thought that was a little impossible. But it was 100%, because you helped me. So thanks so much." "Nihir is an excellent one-on-one tutor who explains things in a way that makes complicated issues seem more simple and easier to understand. His rapport with my daughter was comfortable, and she felt completely at ease to ask questions and get the most out of her time with him. He has a plan for success, and sticks with it." "Nihir was a godsend to our family! We called him at the last minute, based upon a friend's excellent referral, and he helped our daughter get an A on her 9th grade final math exam. We would recommend him without hesitation." "He just got his scores, and he got a 79 on the geometry regents, and an 80 in his geometry class. Thanks a ton for your help. It meant a lot to him. I'll let you know more about next year in August." "I would highly recommend Nihir to anyone who is looking for a math tutor. I am heading to business school this fall and needed to brush up on my calculus skills. As an English major who hasn't taken a math class in 12 years, I wanted to make sure I found a tutor who was knowledgeable and patient. Nihir clearly explained how to approach each problem, and answered all of my questions. I felt much more confident about my ability to solve calculus problems after working with him." "Quest passed Math, and he received a 75%. It is definitely an improvement. Thank you for your help this year. I look forward to seeing you in September." "Please accept this note as recommendation for Nihir. My son had been struggling with math, which is why I hired Nihir to tutor him. Nihir has been tutoring my son for two years now, and has made a tremendous improvement in my son's performance. He has passed each exam/test since Nihir started tutoring him. I highly recommend Nihir."
