I never worked with an interior designer before and I was a little nervous but When I realized how professional and capable she was I started to relax. I love what we did together and the job amazingly stayed within my budget. I really love the way it came out. It feels new, fresh and organized. Arati is very organized, friendly, EXCEPTIONALLY talented, and highly professional. She works very close with you to find the right touch that works for you and understand your needs. Even after finishing all her responsibilities for my condo she stayed available for and responded promptly to any questions I had. I would highly recommend working with her!

Fresh Design was able to accommodate our job to repaint the walls of our old apartment and paint our new apartment on an short turnaround. They have an excellent website, quickly sent us a detailed proposal that itemized our expected charges and then did a great job within budget. They were responsive to our feedback throughout the process and the consultant Ben and painter Lawrence were both a pleasure to work with.

My husband and I can say good things about working with Brigitte. We hired her for work on our living room, bedroom and dining room and she did really good work. We have such a nice place now. We tried to fix up our apartment by ourselves and didn't quite get it right. The colors didn't look good with all the original details and the furniture was very large and stuffy. So we decided to ask someone with a hopefully good eye to assist us in making a few decisions. We decided to hire Brigitte and a few things stand out when you work with her. She is very nice, professional and also accommodating. After having interviewed a few designers we felt that Brigitte was a good fit. We were able to change things around, stop a project and continue without much difficulty. She also recommended a great handyman to accurately paint all the prewar moldings. That is not easy, we tried to do it and it was painful. We also didn't feel rushed, much different from some of the other designers we talked to. The way options were presented did not feel forced. The colors and furniture selection was very much our style and went great with the prewar details in our apartment. It is more subtle, the other designers wanted to talk us into being more bold to make the place more traditional with burgundy for the living room and blue for the dining room. We like prewar details and a lighter feeling and with Brigittes help chose a taupe that's a little more modern but still looks great with off-white trim and molding. It is the same color for both rooms with a shade darker in the living room to make it more cozy. We are very happy with the work and can recommend Brigitte to anyone in need of sprucing up their home.

We contacted Carmine for a small job in our apartment. We needed to run a cable from one side of the apartment to the other, along the walls and above a door. After sending him some pictures, Carmine came to look at the apartment in person, and told us what our options were. He then went looking for material, and sent us pictures of all the different options we could use. Carmine was always very prompt in replying by text, extremely approachable, professional, and actually nice to interact with. In the end he described us how we could do the work on our own, and we ended up saving a couple of hundred bucks thanks to his suggestions and honesty. We trust Carmine and would not hesitate to contact him for future jobs.

I hired Holzman Interiors about 17 years ago when I first bought my home in New Canaan, Ct. She designed and furnished it completely with an update to the existing kitchen. It seemed only logical to call her back when we were ready to do a renovation to the kitchen. We came to her showroom which was a big help. There, you could combine all your needed selections under one roof. Julie is a remarkably talented interior designer who is a joy to work with. Her design aesthetic is absolutely superb. She is dedicated, focused, responsive and a great listen and communicator. She is an excellent partner and collaborator in projects of significance and complexity. We wouldn’t recommend or want to work with anyone else!

We recently restored/renovated a 100+ year old building, Cricket did an absolutely incredible job of staging apartments in an eclectic style that perfectly complemented/showcased both the rich historical character of the building as well as the upgrades. Her creativity, professionalism and timeliness were well above what we expected. A delight to work with.

I'm a fellow interior designer and Ivan, of Peacock Home & Garden Designs, helped me install a holiday window display at the Summit Rug showroom. It was sush a pleasure to work with him. He treated my project as though it were his own, he went above and beyond the call of duty in numerous ways, and his contractor skills came in handy with the --physics-- of the installation. We had to suspend the chairs in mid air, and the ideas he brought to the table left me confident that the chairs would successfully ski down the rug hill. My overall experience was that I had worked with Ivan dozens of times before. But, it was our first time working together. Definately will not be the last.

Hinda's professionalism and creativity really helped my projects along. I always thought that interior designers were meant for large and expensive renovations. Hinda showed me how valuable using a designer can be for smaller projects as well. She saved me hundreds of dollars on upholstery fabric and gave me new perspective on the set up of my living room. Hinda was also very helpful in a bathroom renovation. Highly recommended!

Tracey at B.Home interiors is in my opinion the best choice for interior design in Northern New Jersey. Tracey just "knows" what is stylish and current but not trendy and brings that wisdom and attention to detail to all of her projects. No two projects look the same and there is always a special little nugget in each room that makes it unique and personal.

-I have been living in my apartment for almost 10 years and felt it was time for a makeover. A friend recommended Savvy Spaces. -Being that my apartment is very traditional, I did not want to take any drastic measures in the overall redesign. I was looking to complement what I already have. -After meeting with Rayonne, she was able to make some great recommendations that helped transform my apartment into an eclectic haven by simply adding some cool touches such as furniture and accessories. -Rayonne managed to meet deadlines in a timely manner despite some of the out of stock/discontinued issues we ran into with furniture, etc. She was able to come back with creative solutions. -What a difference! I'm so happy I invested in Savvy Spaces.

Meryl has an amazing sense for design, color and space. I live in Santa Barbara, and have started re-working the interior spaces in my home of 32 years. Meryl came in with fresh ideas that I never would have though of and helped me with choosing the right furniture, the right color palate, picking the best lighting and helping with freshening the look of living in the same space for 32 years. Meryl pays great attention to detail and knows how to create lovely spaces that enhance the beauty of your home. Her experience in the field and her knowledge of what is out there, really helped streamline our project. I would highly recommend her services to anyone looking for a fabulous Interior Designer.

Imagine for a minute arriving in the trawling metropolis of New York City with only three suitcases and a box. You immediately start work and then spend every other waking moment over days, weeks and perhaps months hunting down your perfect apartment only then faced with moving into a white box. Time poor, and faced with the interior design skills of a fifth grader, what do you do? Of course you begin your research online but very soon become absolutely inundated with the plethora of options available: Everything from complete turnkey services for the cost of an arm and two legs to the other extreme where you upload floor plans and without any consultation you’re provided with a list of items you need to purchase and not really sure it’s the look you’re going for in a space you want to call home . Then you find Joe from Designs by Human. Joe provided the perfect balance between complete turn key and internet email; a personalized Human approach just as his namesake suggests. With his consultative style Joe met with me and spent time understanding what I was looking for: A warm design and a space that would feel like home — likely a tough ask (just imagine a typical New York apartment and a design that accommodates a place for overseas guest, a space to entertain and a place to work from home) and a client (me) who’s likes to get involved and is hands on. But Joe with his incredible patience absolutely nailed it. An amazing design in such a small space filled with interesting artistic elements and features integrated throughout my home. It feels warm and personalized incorporating elements of “me”, is complimented by my guests, and is certainly something that I’d never have managed to accomplish by myself. So if you're looking for someone to help with your own project I'd really recommend getting in touch with Joe from Designs by Human. Thanks Joe. I’m really glad we met and thanks for all your help!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
