Chuck is AMAZING!!! I held a 50th birthday party at my home last Saturday evening, and I'm still receiving compliments from the guests - mostly raving about the food. Chuck was like a magician in my kitchen, cooking and pulling out of his hat an amazing glazed salmon dish, chicken francese that guests couldn't get enough of, and rolled flank steak stuffed with spinach and feta (WOW- my favorite!) --- all fresh and delicious!! Chuck looked polished and professional, was very polite and accomodating, and handled 'every detail' beautifully. Without a doubt, I plan on doing business with him again. Thank you Chuck!!

I had a private dinner hosted by Chef Nirschel and it was an experience that could not be beat, nor forgotten. From the beautiful table settings, to the impeccable service, and the incredible food--everything was absolutely top notch. To start, he put out cut up melon that he added crispy prosciutto to and then sprinkled it with some balsamic glaze. The plating of this dish was absolutely incredible. More importantly, the taste was out of this world. The balance of the two flavors went together so perfectly. It's a dish that I will be copying and definitely serving for dinner parties that I host! For the main course he cooked chicken piccata topped with roasted red cherry tomatoes and a side of crispy broccoli. Everything was cooked with such perfection. My mouth is still watering thinking about the deliciousness of all the dishes. The chicken melted in your mouth and was flavored to perfection. Above all, Chef Chris was so awesome and fun to be around. His outgoing personality, love and respect for his guests, and obviously his food were all way above par. He exceeded all expectations. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a private dinner.

We had a party in our home for 30 colleagues. Chef Dan arrived exactly on time and brought everything he needed with him. He prepared an array of visually appealing and delectable tasting culinary creations that wowed our guests taste buds and satiated their appetites. The bartender was great and the servers did an impeccable job of constantly bringing Dan's gourmet offerings while being pleasant and unobtrusive. Many caterers provide quantity and some high quality- chef Dan did both at a reasonable price and with a smile on his face. He cooked everything fresh in our kitchen and when he and his staff finished, our kitchen looked as pristine as when he arrived. The party was great fun and a big success. Every one of our guests commented on how fabulous the food was and how outstanding the service. He is our go to guy for any future parties or affairs. kudos and thanks. Mel & Pamela Pratter

It was an absolute pleasure working with Maria Luisa. The hard work and attention to detail that she and her staff put in to my son's Communion party was extremely impressive. Everything from the centerpieces to the passed hors d'oeuvres to the amazing roasted pig(absolutely stunning how they presented the pig!!!) to the desserts! Just absolutely perfect! The wait staff did an amazing job having everything move smoothly from one course to the next! My guests (all 180 of them) loved everything. I have been getting emails and text messages from people saying how wonderful and successful the party was. It was due to you all their hard work that the party came off so phenomenal! Not only was the presentation of the food and the decorations visually appealing but the food tasted incredible! I will definitely be using them again and will recommend them to any one looking to throw an amazing, unforgettable party, no matter how small or big- they can handle it!!!!

I have two words for Manjar Boutique Catering - Hire Them! Adolfo and his team were nothing more than stellar. We hired them for our wedding. From the initial courtship down to the reception and after, Manjar treated us with professionalism and empathy. There was continuous communication during the months that led to our big day. We did not want your typical "wedding dinner" of mash potatoes and steamed wrapped vegetable. Since my spouse and I are from different cultures, we wanted the food to reflect us. Manjar created a customized menu that did just that. The food tasting was also an experience as well. We felt like we were in a 5-star restaurant with the chef joining us at the table. Once we tasted their food, we immediately signed the contract! On our wedding day, the service was spectacular! We decided to have a family-style dinner where guests would have to interact with each other while passing around food plates. Our guests commented during and after the wedding how good the food and the service were -- which is exactly what we wanted.

We loved the services and food catered by Kulinary Kings. They catered food for our 125 guest consisting of a variety of backyard BBQ foods. Our guest loved the roasted corn, the salmon pasta salad and the macaroni and cheese and chicken and beef skewers to name a few. Even more than the food, the service was great- we also requested servers and a bar tender and I must say all were on point and attentive to our guest. I would recommend This cater and will definitely use him again!

My firm hired David and Paglia Hospitality Inc. to provide breakfast and lunch and a platter of goodies to leave with us for a company event for our employees. One of the partners was enamored with the idea of having a food truck as the caterer for our event. So begins this culinary experience. I asked for typical breakfast fare and he delivered: Homemade corned beef hash, ricotta pancakes, Brioche French toast, and breakfast sandwiches plus more. His food was delicious and was a wonderful way to start our day! In regards to lunch, he even delivered more: Parmesan chicken wings, Tuscan BBQ wings, fried bacon rice balls, lobster rolls, fish tacos, roasted brussel sprouts with Calabrian chili, 5 different sandwiches and 3 burgers. We also had cookies and brownies. He was on time. He was professional. Most importantly: He worked fast to feed 30 people, with every order made upon request! I highly recommend Paglia Hospitality: you will not be disappointed.

Working with chef Flo was amazing. He was an excellent teacher and knew a lot about cooking. We made a chicken breast with jarlsburg cheese wrapped in prosciutto, then we made steaks with fried eggs and goat cheese, and finally we had a delicious molten lava cake with fresh fruit. I highly recommend chef Flo.

I have been catering from Sorrento for three years, Christmas and Easter. My family and friends love her dinners. Filomena's cooking is like eating in your Mother's kitchen, Chicken masala, eggplant rollatini, sausage and peppers, pot roast with gravy and noodles, her infamous meatballs(Yum) if you want something different she will make it for you. Try catering from Sorrento you will not be disappointed.

Hire Brendan. The man can cook like no other. He's laid back, but in control. I'm pretty high strung and the event he cooked for was important to me. My family, friends and colleagues were all gathered for a massive announcement. Brendan listened to my needs and the needs of the evening, and somehow created a menu that complimented it. People still talk about that show roasted pork. I still dream about it!

Hiring Ron and Miracle Catering for my wedding on 9/10/16 was the best decision we could have made. From the very start, Ron was very professional and quick to respond to all questions and inquiries. He set up a taste testing before the wedding at my parent's house and from that moment on, we were sold. The food was amazing! I never was that excited about a salad before. Ron was also flexible with planning a menu around our needs and style as we wanted an appetizer/station only wedding that was heavily vegetarian. Ron provided helpful suggestions to make the menu diverse and well-rounded. Ron and his team were able to manage our difficult venue setting that had little indoor space and no kitchen. The day of our wedding went so smoothly mainly due to the staff at Miracle Catering. We rented linens through them and Ron's team did a beautiful job setting up the room without any directions. The staff were so friendly and helpful the entire night. The food was beautifully displayed. All of our guests raved about the food that included brie and roasted apple crostini, tacos, mini burgers, tomato soup shooters with grilled cheese, dumplings, mini baked potatoes with goat cheese just to name a few! We had a pasta station and an Asian station (that had a beef/chicken and a tofu stir fry option). We also used Ron's baker and the cakes were delicious and went perfectly with the ice cream sundae bar. My only regret is that I did not eat more at my wedding and did not take home a doggie bag. I am actively seeking another opportunity to hire Miracle Catering again and would highly recommend them for any event.

Corey was amazing! He arrived on time, cooked everything from scratch using local ingredients, all of the food came out in a timely matter, and he cleaned up after! He was great to work with when planning the meal. We had a delicious salad with an amazing bacon and tomato shallot vinaigrette, for entree we had beef tenderloin with a roasted garlic and rosemary mash potatoes and veggie medley, and dessert we had a chocolate ricotta mousse with strawberries. Everything was amazing! I can't wait to have Chef Corey cook for me again! I highly recommend Chef Corey! :)

Britta catered a wonderful dinner party we threw for about 19 people. The food was light and delicious -- a threw course meal with a yummy salad, roast chicken and berries & cream for dessert. Perfect for a dinner party, savory without being too heavy and weighing our guests down. Britta worked with us to come up with an outstanding menu that was within our budget. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

My family used Cornbread & Caviar for one of our holiday dinners. We had an amazing meal! It was like having all of your favorite dishes at one time! My ultimate favorite from that day was the roast beef. It was the most tender piece of beef I ever had; accompanied by the perfect balance of gravy. It was all I wanted for several days after. Cornbread & Caviar will be my choice in the future.

I was invited to a pig roast party recently hosted by my friend and the food served there was out of this world delicious. All the food was so fresh, beautifully decorated, clean and I got introduced by my friend to Chef Peter Camerata who was hired to do the catering. Peter was so profeshinal, funny and explained how the various items were prepared and his experience in the resteraunt/catering industry. I really enjoyed my conversation with him and hired him on the spot to cater an upcoming conference that I was in charge of running. Peter came up with an amazing menu to fit my budget, everything was delivered fresh, set up for me and cleaned up at the end. The participants of the conference raved about the food to me for days which included pasta, homemade meatballs, chicken entree, salads and deserts. I am excited to try out his clam bake at the street festival he will be participating in, I heard only great things about it. I highly recommend Chef Camerata from Hot Stix Grill and Catering for all your catering/party/BBQ needs. You won't be disappointed and I promise you won't leave hungry!!!

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW...... Is literally ALL I can say about CookUnity! This IS New York's "BEST KEPT SECRET", and hopefully it won't remain a secret for much longer! Let's start from the beginning, Im an Event Coordinator, and I've been scouting for caterers for two upcoming events. So here I am using ThumbTack for the very first time, which was very different in itself, as I'm so accustomed to being the one who researches companies so that I can present to my clients, but now I'm having the opportunity to sit back, while these same companies now bid for the chance to "win" my event, sought of speak, It's quite exhilarating. And that's how I came in contact with CookUnity, and the lovely Pilar, who's a customers "DREAM". PILAR IS AN AWESOME ASSET TO THIS COMPANY, and should be rewarded! THANK YOU PILAR, you made an experience that I was skeptical about and turned it into on of the highlights of the day, so caring, honest and professional. And I, We, appreciated everything you did for us. Pilar was awesome within our brief interactions, she explained the companies purpose and led me to the website to continue my research. She stayed with me during the ordering process and assisted me with purchasing some of the best meals. As I began looking through the site, I was AMAZED at the amount of choices CookUnity offered. 55 chefs, with over 50 different items to choose, from gourmet meals, beverages, treats and other delectables, all organic, gluten free, locally sourced all for A RIDICULOUSLY LOW FEE!!! Now you tell me where you can find a gourmet meal with all the trimmings for $15.00 dollars or more, there is no restaurant ANYWHERE that is able to do that, especially not in New York, and on top of that THEY DELIVERED IT TO MY FRONT DOOR!!!! I WAS BEYOND SHOCKED!!! Now let's get to the food... we were a bit hungry (greedy...lol), so we ordered ALOT of FOOD!! We order the following: 2 NY Strip Steak with Scallop Potatoes 2 Maple Mustard Salmon with Kale (DELICIOUS) & Sweet Potatoes 2 Mushroom & Spinach Crepes 2 Brown Rices 2 Green Beans with lemon zest 2 Roasted Vegetables 2 Walnut Blondie 2 Chocolate Fudge Brownies, 4 Chocolate Cookies 2 Organic Mint Lemonades, And 2 Rosemary Pear waters.... WHEW!!! AND WE ATE IT ALLLLL!!! There were EMPTY cartons EVERYWHERE!!! I kept one for my wife so that she could take to work the next day and she was highly amazed that it was still fresh after overnight refrigeration. Listen if you are looking for GREAT GOURMET food for affordable pricing, book "COOKUNITY", check out the website and download the app, TRUST ME you will not be disappointed one bit!!! ASK FOR PILAR, and tell them Warren sent you!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
