Gloria is a fantastic tutor. She is well prepared energetic and thoughtful.mshe came to class with lessons specifically designed for me and my level of Spanish. She is very good at correcting without losing the flow of the class. I've had three Spanish tutors, and Hloria is by far the best. I hope to be able to hire her again soon. She is a gem!

Sasha is the greatest math tutor I could have asked for. I had no confidence in my GRE math ability before working with Sasha, and a few weeks later, now two days before my test, I know that there's no problem I can't handle. That's all thanks to Sasha.

I studied with James for my SATs. He has a very unique way of approaching the exam that my prior tutors did not offer. For example, he taught me how to analyze questions based on the way they are written. This was a great skill to have and made me much more confident about going into the test room.

Aron was preparing me for SAT and helping me in my college Algebra class. Thanks to him I did well on both tests. He is a knowledgeable and patient tutor who is capable to teach math on any level. He is much better than any tutors I had in the past. Definitely would recommend him.

I had taken French for many years, at the Alliance Française and with 2 private tutors from the Alliance. Ainna is better than both of them. Both of the private tutors didn't do anything except talk to me in French. For that they charged $80 an hour. Ainna charges less, and we do exercises that help me really learn. The Alliance classes were good, but they didn't help at all with my accent. And I didn't get a lot of talking time, even in a small class. I highly recommend Ainna!

One of the best tutors my daughter ever had. She struggled with the sat for a year until we found him. He made lessons around her needs and that helped her do well. She was able to get into the college she wanted.

My daughter always seemed to have panic attacks leading up to the SAT tests. I was desperate to find a way for her to be comfortable specially as SATs are coming up. All I can say is after a few weeks with the tutors at Chelsea, my daughter’s confidence level has gone through the roof. Now if that’s not progress, I don’t know what is. Thank you Chelsea International.

Katya is a great tutor! She worked with me herself twice a week and also provided support between sessions. She quickly identified my knowledge gaps and my “most limiting factor” which was speed and strategy. My SAT Score went up from 1200 to 1400! WooHoo!

I've worked with many tutors over the years and Zoe is in a class of her own. She comes prepared with relevant lesson plans and sends helpful notes after each of session. She is simultaneously intentional and adaptable. Her approach is creative, encouraging and goal oriented. Of all of the tutors I've worked with, I've made the most progress with Zoe. She is a star!

Daniel is an incredible job preparing my daughter for the SAT. She managed an over 300 point jump in her practice tests. Most importantly, Daniel make my daughter more confident in her abilities and comfortable with the overall process. A good tutor inspires a student not only to work hard, but also to expect better things from themselves and Daniel certainly excelled at that.

My daughter has had two ACT sessions with Denny. He is patient and is completely understanding of her needs. Denny is not only well organized, patient and thorough, but he also goes beyond in providing lesson plans; he assigns her home work daily to help her avoid procrastination. Excellent tutor! Professional, well prepared! Extremely smart, but still very patient, positive and encouraging when someone doesn't understand a concept. Highly recommend him for ACT prep!!!!

Michelle has worked with my now 11 year old daughter, for 5 years. She suffers from severe dyslexia & adhd. I can honestly say she would never be at grade level without Michelle. She has single handedly kept her up to speed with her incredible knowledge & ability to teach those who have trouble in a school environment. My daughter is now enrolled in a private prep school & is excelling. I'll forever continue to use Michelle every summer until she graduates. She is beyond gifted, with endless experience & expertise in all forms of educational delays or simply a tutor to further excel with any child that doesn't fit "the mold". I absolutely couldn't recommend her more, as much as I'd like to keep her to myself, I know she can help so many students & they love her dearly. My daughter, who has never been a huge fan of "school" never wants to leave Michelle! I can attest from years of sweat & tears of struggle, she has elliviated most of her worry.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
  • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
