I cannot say enough great things about Tara and Sweet Harmony. My husband and I had a harp and violinist at our wedding and it was the best decision we could have ever made!! We had been guests at a wedding last year with a violinist for the ceremony provided by Sweet Harmony and we knew we wanted the same vibe for our day. Tara was so helpful and accommodating the entire time leading up to the wedding. Any time I had a question (and I had a lot!), she was so sweet and willing to assist. The music was perfect for the day we had envisioned and the musicians were extremely professional and charismatic. All of our guests the entire night and weeks to follow, kept complimenting us on choosing to have the harp and violin as opposed to a DJ or band. We chose to have the musicians play for the ceremony and stay for most of the dinner reception. Everyone thought it was amazing that we had a harp! I felt so confident in our decision to go with Sweet Harmony before our wedding but felt even better about it during and after with all of our guest's feedback! I hope to have another event that I can use Sweet Harmony for! I cannot say enough great things, LOVE LOVE LOVE Tara and Sweet Harmony!!

I briefly took guitar lessons from Josh. I wanted to learn to play with other musicians and improvise, and his jazz background is what caught my attention. The sessions were informative and Josh was very encouraging. I had to stop unexpectedly but what I learned in the few lessons I took was very helpful and got me out of the rut I fall into while practicing on my own.

I have been studying with Brittany for several years, and have learned so much. We started with improvisational jazz, then moved on to transcription, and eventually I started writing my own music using the knowledge she taught me. I had only been playing a few years, off and on, and really felt progression. She has accompanied me with piano, bass, vibraphone, and I believe even a flute once. She is quite talented and can play many instruments. I have also seen her live shows, and they are really good. Her Portishead tributes are really impressive and should be seen. It is great to see your teacher actively participating in the NYC music scene. I would recommend Brittany students of all ages. From piano, to voice, classical to jazz, I am certain she can make you a better player.

I follow Nico's gigs as regularly as possible and have been doing so ever since her fledgling days as a singer song-writer. I love her original music as it has captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics . She is quite tenacious in getting herself "out there" and in so doing, she leaves me breathless with all the things she does to promote her talents at any one time. I like to go with friends to hang out at her various gigs and be entertained by her while casually enjoying good food rather than a cover band with very loud music. Nico is a very talented singer and musician who plays different instruments equally well.

Marla Mase is an extraordinary event planner, creator of party magic and Producer! After having been in the business for a couple of decades and working in so many different venues, types of events, parties and performances, Marla has an incredible team. She’s amassed a phenomenal, devoted group of performers, artists, designers & caterers whom she employs at all her parties, depending on need and skill set. I have worked with Marla on several creative projects and events and had a ball working with her. She is the ultimate professional, but always works in a relaxed, easygoing fashion. She is open to discussion and will always brainstorm to bring ones vision to life. Recently she produced a Rock show and party in Tribeca for me that hosted an amazing band, along with several international actors, dancers and singers. Marla hired one of her designers to transform the old Tribeca firehouse into an underworld of sea creatures and magic. It was spectacular. The food was a beautifully abundant array of hors devours and beverages. Hailing from Tribeca and having worked in the New York area for so many years for hundreds of high-end clients, Marla is truly cutting edge. She has an eye for the unique, and is able to adapt to the vision of her client. Marla really gets the job done. She’s personable and lovely and I always feel I’m in good hands with her at the helm.

I had started getting into Latin music a little over a year ago when I met first met Nick Herman. Originally, I tried to learn to play Latin percussion (congas, bongos, timbales etc.) from books and instructional videos. I also tried lessons with a few different musicians. I was at it for months, however, I found my progress to be very slow. Eventually, I confronted Nick about lessons. After only 5 lessons, my bongo playing had improved exponentially! I would play my bongos with other musicians in the park and after one or two songs, many people would compliment me on my playing. One night I played a duet with a guitarist who would compliment me on my playing after every song. Later, I came to find out he was the leader of a salsa band who frequently performed around the city! Shortly after that I made Nick my official trainer on the bongos and cowbell! Nick Herman also leads his own band. I think anyone who is serious about learning Latin percussion would benefit greatly by having Nick as an instructor. I wish I had began lessons with him sooner!

My experience with Yuto, I could say, was life-changing. The amount of not only knowledge, but really feeling of what Jazz and music in general can be, was endless. Yuto treats you as a real friend, and his lessons are both very practical, but also with a theoretical foundation that really provides a real sense of what you are playing or composing. Also, Yuto, above all, is a great human being, with a big heart and passion for music. We ended up recording some things at his studio and continue to be good friends. I will always thank him and consider him to be one of the best musicians I´ve played with and hope to play again soon with him. To anyone that is looking for lessons on Jazz, or classical or any kind of music. I could, with all sincerety say, Yuto is the one for you. -Diego D.

I have been taking lessons with Michael Winnicki for about a year now. He is an expert player to say the least! His examples and techniques on teaching are very effective. He is very clear with his instruction and lays everything out so a true understanding can be reached. I have learned so many things in a only a short while! He pays close attention to articulation and stresses musical nuances. Michael is very friendly, and seems to truly care about my progress. I highly recommend him as a teacher for any style of drumming. He is an expert in jazz, rock, dance, funk, and classical. He has even given me lessons on the marimba!

Chanan was a joy to work with! Knowledgeable and skilled and very creative. He helped produce a record of sacred music for me and also provided back up guitar for my band when needed a few times in Dallas. He is an exceptional engineer and guitar player with a fine ear for detail.

I was learning piano when Minji was teaching at NYU and I was a student. She was super patient with me and guided me step by step. Unlike some of the other teachers, she really takes time to get to know the student and comes up with the curriculum that is suitable for the student. She is also super knowledgeable when it comes to jazz harmony and composition. Not only that she is very bright and fun to work with. I highly recommend Minji!!

    Omer Ashano Music

Omer loves music, the violin, and it shows. His youtube videos are smokin' and had me humming with joy. He puts a spin on the classical instrument in a way I had not known possible before...by playing jazz with it! It's just what a teenage boy needs to experience. My son has been playing since he was 5 years old and I felt that the traditional, classical instructors with their dated attitude just would not cut it at this juncture in his music career. With Omer teaching, I'm confident my latently, hesitant violinist will "produce" his own music with time. He goes away from some lessons whistling the piece. When Omer and my son jam, it's quite exciting. Omer is knowledgeable, modern, in tune with the young student, I believe because he was a young boy once too. He's absolutely what we are looking for in a contemporary instructor. And his jazz concerts are quite inspiring to see too. I hope my raving reviews won't take him away from my student but he's one of the best violinists in New York City presently.

Hired Anthem for a birthday party and it went great. They sound exactly like the bands they cover and put on a great show. They're pro, no goofy embarrassing talk between songs and the price was right. The sound was great and they DJ'd during the breaks. Would definitely rehire. Thanks guys!

We hired the band to play at our neighborhood block party and they were awesome! Music was enjoyed by all, from young children to senior citizens. They played a great very variety of music including Jazz standards and popular tunes. They were very professional, played as scheduled and at just the right volume.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
