I came to Adrienn looking to add long sleeves added to my strapless wedding dress. Initially I had gone to another seamstress who was unable to do it due to the low back of the dress. When I brought the gown to Adrienn, she was able to make me a bodysuit with sleeves using matching lace from my gown to wear underneath. It looked absolutely amazing!! You would never be able to tell that the sleeves were added on after the fact, and as a bonus I got to take the sleeves off for the reception for a different look. Not only is Adrienn extremely talented, but she is also a sweetheart to work with! So thankful for her for helping my wedding dress dream come true!!

Dress is absolutely beautiful. Very skilled seamstress. I sent her a picture and she was able to make her own pattern. The quality of the work was exquisite. My daughter was ecstatic and loves her dress. It truly is a quality item that she will enjoy for many years to come.

An experienced seamstress/designer from Italy, Sara is an expert in her field and a trustworthy person. It was only two days away from my wedding day and I was desperate to find a tailor who knows the trade and offers reasonable quote. I was very luck to have found Sara. She was very responsive and customer-oriented. Knowing that I had very little time for coming back and forth for fitting, she generously offered to come to my place to do the work, with her magic baggie filled with her sewing necessity, even an iron. I had her hemmed my bridal's gown and added a bustle--it has three layers with the top layer being beading lace. She finished the work in a couple of hours BY HAND! Impressed by her craft, I asked her to help me with other projects--adding a decor piece to my wedding tango dress and elongating wedding pants for my husband. She did them with ease on the spot. She apparently loved what she was doing! I am sure she can take on more complicated project! Just make sure you bring your things to her place where she has access to her sewing machine and everything else. Highly recommended! Get her to be your personal tailor before she gets too booked up ;D

Rosario is INCREDIBLE! You will NOT be disappointed. I went to her literally 1.5 weeks before a wedding in which I was a bridesmaid because my dress came out almost 3-4 dress sizes too small. She created an ENTIRE new back for the dress & it look perfect. I actually think it looked better than the original! It was a lace back as well so I was really nervous of how it would turn out. She was warm, helpful & flexible. Worked flawlessly & communicated quickly. I've been singing her praises ever since & feel grateful to have a great seamstress whenever needed. Thank you, Rosario! You are so gifted! :)

Everything I've ever learned about sewing, I've learned from Kaer's founder, Marianne. She is an incredible seamstress and teacher. She has altered dresses and made new dresses from scratch that I still get compilments on.

Lana is a professional. She knows what she is doing. You CANNOT go wrong with choosing Yestothedress! She was willing to work with my budget. I had Lana, and her seamstress spend so much time with me until I had the "this is the one" moment. They will work with you to meet your needs. I was looking for a modest dress. They will go above and beyond to make sure that you get what you want without any hesitation.

I am a seamstress. I work from home, or I will go where the job is. I also do alterations on most items.

      New To Thumbtack

I am a semiretired, expert seamstress and patternmaker who does drapes, alterations and fittings. I was previously a quality control manger for Ann Taylor for 6 years. Prior to that, I was a technical designer for 10 years. Prior to my tech design position, I owned my own contracting business, making samples and patterns for designers.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do seamstresses do?

Seamstresses provide tailoring, alteration and custom sewing for clothing or costumes. Seamstresses can reshape clothing that is too big or too small so that it fits properly — for example, hemming pants that are too long or bringing in the waistband of pants or a skirt that is too large. Seamstresses can also provide more complex alterations such as adding tucks to shape a dress or bringing in the body of a shirt. More time and expertise will be required for challenging fabric such as silk or clothing with lining, like a blazer or lined slacks. Seamstresses are also skilled in altering wedding dresses and other formal wear. The time and skill required for these types of alterations is greater than for basic tasks like hemming, so be sure to find an experienced seamstress to handle your special items.

Many seamstresses can also custom-make clothing for you. To come up with the design, you can bring in a pattern you like or an item of clothing you want the seamstress to replicate, or ask the seamstress to create a pattern for you. You can bring your own unique design to life with the help of a seamstress. There is no formal job training required to be a seamstress; many learn to sew and design from practical experience. For larger projects, like tailoring a suit, always be sure to review portfolios of work and read about the seamstress’s experience before committing.

        How much do seamstresses charge?

The price for seamstress services will vary depending on the type of work you have done. The national average rate for a seamstress or tailor is $150-$280. Simple projects like repairing holes and hemming jeans usually have flat rates; larger projects, such as sewing custom creations, altering suits or altering wedding dresses, are typically priced based on the specifics of the fabric and pattern and the amount of work time needed. Here are a few examples of tailor and seamstress average costs:

        • Shorten sleeves of a dress shirt: $19.
        • Shorten jacket sleeves: $23 (without buttons) to $28 (with buttons).
        • Take in the body of a jacket: $40 (two seams) to $52 (three seams).
        • Take in a dress shirt: $20.
        • Adjust the shoulders of a jacket: $35.
        • Hem a skirt or dress: $10-$14.
        • Take in or let out a skirt or pair of pants: $15 (unlined) to $20 (lined) or $25 (with a zipper).
        • Shorten top-stitched pants: $10.
        • Shorten cuffed pants: $14.
        • Shorten lined pants: $14.
        • Shorten lined and cuffed pants: $18.
        • Take in a sheath dress: $45.
        • Restitch a fraying seam: $5.
        • Replace buttons: 50 cents each.
        • Move a button: $2.
        • Add a hook and eye: 50 cents per set.

Are you supposed to tip a seamstress?

Tipping seamstresses is not standard protocol. That said, anytime a talented seamstress goes above and beyond, offering a gratuity is a thoughtful gesture. A gratuity might be appropriate if the seamstress accepted a large project for you at the last minute — for example, hemming new suit pants the night before your work trip or taking in your party dress the day before your birthday. A gratuity may also be appropriate as recognition for the long hours of skilled stitching that your seamstress has put in altering your wedding dress, which often requires multiple fittings and precise fixes to make your dress perfect. If you do decide to offer a gratuity, first ask if the seamstress accepts gratuities; if they do, offer them an additional 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill.
