I hired hired Berry Home Improvements & Handymen Services to install and faucet in my bathroom. The job definitely needed someone with Berry's knowledge and experience. He was very professional and had all the tools necessary to get the job done right. He also installed a ceiling fan. With both jobs, he was very patient and cleaned up after he was done. I'll definitely use Berry's Home Improvements & Handymen Services again.

I am giving Varian an outstanding rating because he successfully resolved an difficult emergency situation despite some confusion in the process. He re-installed 2 very large heavy window air conditioners [24,000BTU and 18,000 BTU] I had in winter storage on a hot day when my regular installer defaulted. Somehow he was not aware at first that he would need a helper but while waiting he helped me with sealing up some other window frames in the apartment. He was cooperative and professional. He reinstalled the AC's in accordance with some of my particular requirements. The job cost more than I expected but was worth it. Next time I will make sure the service guy gets the job description from Thumbtack.

Joseph is super responsive with an emphasis put on customer service. He helped me with a dishwasher repair job that other installers refused to do. I was very satisfied with his work, communication, and availability. He is now my go to for anything having to do with my apartment!

I'm glad I hired Rick to work on my projects (assemble and install two ceiling fans, replace faucet, medicine cabinet and light in the bathroom. He used his professional judgement on a few of the items rather than just getting the job done because I asked. Turns out my entire apartment is jerry-rigged and Rick spent several more hours here than he had planned. I'm glad Rick took his time to do it right. I was skeptical hiring a handyman here in NYC, but Rick was great and I'd definitely hire him again in the future.

Konstantinos and his assistant sanded and painted our kitchen and bathroom cabinets. They also installed two backsplash glass panels and painted the cabinet beneath our kitchen sink. They were very flexible about scheduling the job and accommodated several requests we made to postpone. They completed the job on schedule and on budget, were very neat, professional, and courteous. We trusted them in our home. They responded to messages promptly and helped us to figure out how to accomplish what we wanted done. We would definitely recommend them and would use them again.

Matt came to our house to help problem solve our stone shower that was leaking into our 1st floor roof. He was very responsive and when he inspected the issue, he recommended a solution that would involve recaulking our shower which would save us from having to cut into our 1st floor ceiling to get a look underneath. This has worked out great and we couldn't be happier.

I have had David Marx do many jobs over the last few weeks to transform our second home which had become somewhat dilapidated. He has changed light fixtures, fixed closet doors, hung a new TV on the wall, added grab bars in the bathroom, repaired a ceiling and wall damaged from a leak, installed a new ceiling fan and new blinds. I am very pleased with the work he has done. He is very professional and knowledgeable and a very hard worker. He is neat and takes care to thoroughly clean up at the end of the day. My only criticism is that he often runs late. Yet once he is on the job he never takes a break. I have a degree in Interior Design and as such I appreciated his creative approach to finding solutions to problems. Thanks to Dave my husband's "man-cave" has been transformed. I highly recommend him.

Peter hung 2 tricky ABC Carpet and Home lights for us recently. I first attempted to hang these lights with my father in law and we were ready to tear our hair out it was so complicated. Our ceiling is made in such a way that we could not penetrate it with masonry bits. Peter was confident, competent, and prepared. He breezed through the install in less time than I anticipated. I highly recommend his services and will be using him again.

What a fantastic Contractor! We had 5 contractors come to look at our basement as it needed a new staircase, walls, ceiling, flooring and new electric. Out of the 5 George was the only one who a) turned up on time to quote and b) submitted his estimate when he said he was going to. That not only gave us a good indication of his reliability but also the estimate was really fair compared to some of the others The basement looks absolutely fantastic and we are so so pleased with the job that he has done for us. He was reliable, tidy, polite and also gave us some really good ideas for some areas we weren't sure what to do with. You won't go wrong hiring George I promise and look forward to having him back to do our attic as soon as we can afford it :-)

The All-Rise team went above and beyond to deliver a great experience. I had many questions about the execution especially considering the margin for error, I really needed to get my floors done right and get it done right in one attempt, All Rise accomplished that. All-Rise delivered within my budget and actually added value beyond that which is a unicorn type of service in an industry that will charge you for everything including the right I breathe. I can go on and on about All Rise, but at some point it will seem bias when in truth, I’m just an overly satisfied customer that will bring my future need back to All Rise every time. All Rise completed my floor renovations, installed by base boards and door molding, renovated my damaged sheet rock wall from molding and even surprisingly repaired a crack in my ceiling. Cheers to you guys and Thank you so much.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
