Action Air saved the day for us and didn't charge us an arm and a leg for it. We needed a new water heater immediately and had very limited space. They came and did the job that day and worked through the evening to make sure I had heat for my little one!

I was very lucky to have found Marty on Thumbtack. He was a local professional who identified a tough problem with my water heater, and solved the problem though a series of troubleshooting techniques. He did not throw up his hands at the problem and stayed in close communication with me to finally correct the problem. Highly recommended.

Ed came by the restaurant and SAVED THE DAY. I met several plumbers and they all tried to sneak unfair amounts of money to fix my water heater. Ed came and educated and fixed the problem within 24 hours and saved me nightmares of losing tons of money. Ed is reliable, honest, and I'd refer him to anyone who needs some honest work done. Thank you Ed!

Anthony was knowledgeable, professional, and very responsive. He really knows his craft and answered my various questions regarding some other issues we were having. He was honest about what needed replacing, and what could wait a little longer. I actually hired him to come back and replace my water heater in a week because I liked the quality of his work and his honesty. I use thumbtack because I am new to my area and like to get an idea of what something will cost prior to starting a project. His online quote was accurate, and he let me know exactly what needed changing right away. I recommend him to anyone looking for a really great, knowledgeable plumber!

David was responsive. He worked with me prior to coming down to my home to help me buy a replacement water heater and parts at Home Depot and then he unloaded the water heater from my van and installed it. He showed me how to perform annual service and also gave me tips on how to scrap the replacement water heater. Highly recommend him.

Sink fixture installation| Lowering temperature of water heater Nicholas was patient, professional, punctual, and polite! From the beginning, he was patient conversing with me not only to get an understanding of what needed to be done, but also specifics to pick up (product wise). Extremely professional and personable! Having a baby in the home means extra precautions, and he was more than understanding of this, and even fixed the water temperature for free. We will definitely be calling him back within the next two weeks to do some more maintenance around the house. Thank you !!!!

It was a pleasure working with Billy and the next time I have a plumbing need, he will be the first person I call. Billy was fair and upfront about his pricing and stuck by his quote, even when the job got a little more complicated than originally expected. He is a true professional and it was a comfort seeing how concerned he was about the quality of his work and the safety of his clients. His assistants were polite, professional, and did great work as well. When I first reached out, I wasn't sure what was causing my plumbing issues. Billy did a thorough assessment and was able to identify the source of the problems. He was able to replace my water heater as well as some of the faucets in the house and now everything is running perfectly. What was even more impressive was the fact that he was able to identify what did not need replacing. He didn't do any unnecessary work. He was fair, honest, did quality work, and I highly recommend him.

What a find! Matt was very professional and completed the work in good time. He changed out some old pipes installed a tankless water heater and removed our old water heater. His estimate was competitive and he did a few extra things—fixed a loose toilet handle, rehung a clothing bar that had come off the wall didn’t charge anymore. I’m definitely going to be a repeat customer. Thanks Matt!

I needed a water heater replacement and called Benny at Subzero because of his positive reviews. He completed the work yesterday and I would recommend Benny to my family and friends who have plumbing needs. He always responded to my calls in a timely manner and was flexible in scheduling my water heater replacement. Benny and his son did a great job with the removal of my old water heater and installation of the new one. They worked efficiently and carefully in the small closet space that houses the water heater. I couldn't give them a higher recommendation! By the way, Benny's price was the lowest of the three estimates that I solicited so I know I also got a great value using him and his son.

Joe Olsen did an excellent job for us inspecting our two gas furnaces. I watched him inspect the first one, during which time he explained what he was doing every step of the way. I have a humidifier on the basement furnace, which he checked meticulously to ensure that it would work once the clogged water line was fixed (for which we've called a plumber). He also made sure that I knew exactly what to do once the water line was unclogged. Joe is a knowledgeable and detailed type of person who cares about his customer and is committed to doing things the right way. He's also neat - puts everything back the way he found it and cleans up after the job is done. We'll use him again.

Super. I hired him for replacing my older water heater to the new one. He was efficient, professional and responsible. The job took longer time than expected due to the mismatch between two heaters, but he was able to complete it and the new water heater functions well. He provided the invoice as I asked and the amount I was charged was exactly same as the quote. I am willing to ask him for another work in the future.

We needed a new water heater and David responded quickly and worked efficiently. After a brief phone call I sent him pictures yesterday and he was here today to replace. The quote he gave me was exactly what we were charged which was also much more reasonable then two other plumbers we spoke to. He and his team were professional and left our home as clean as when they began. I would definitely recommend Absolute Precision and use them in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.
