Heidi R. says, "There are no words for how grateful I am for this studio. The owners are incredible people who provide a warm and welcoming environment. They, along with all of the instructors, are skilled dancers and even better teachers. They are extremely patient and have the ability to break things down for each student in a way that they’ll understand–it’s truly individualized instruction. The studio offers everything from choreographing wedding dances to dancing in pro-am competitions with students, who have had huge success. I have been learning from and competing with Michael for 10 years and have experienced tremendous growth and accomplishment. They also have a variety of group classes and workshops, including fascinating, historically significant dances like the shim sham. Big Apple Ballroom parties are a blast, with mini classes followed by general dancing, awesome showcases, and fun themes. The other students are friendly, welcoming and, above all, supportive of each other. It’s like a second home to me. I wholeheartedly recommend Big Apple Ballroom."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
