We have had two training sessions with Ariana and our two four-month old Chow-Shepherd mixes, and we couldn't be happier with what she has taught the pups and us so far. The dogs adore her and respond well to her training techniques, and she clearly has a lot of in-depth knowledge and experience working with dogs and animals in general. I appreciate that she has a background in animal behavior, so she understands why they act the way they do and uses that to redirect their behavior. We look forward to many more sessions with her!

Suki is great! She is very flexible and absolutely loved animals! She is gentle and watchful. She walked the dogs in the park and several times during the day, fed them and spent good quality time with them. They clearly loved her too.

My dog may actually love Jenn more than she loves me!!!! I have never met a person who is better with animals than Jenn. She is extraordinarily attentive to my dog, noticing when she isn’t acting like her usual self, if something is bothering her and always suggesting ways to resolve any issues she may have. My neighbors and doormen have even said that they have never seen a dog walker treat an animal the way Jenn treats my dog. She truly loves her as if she were her own. I trust Jenn immensely and her honesty, professionalism and level of care is unmatchable. I would recommend Jenn to everyone and guanratee you will see a difference in the happiness of your pet once Jenn enters their life. She is a blessing.

I have known Kate since 2006 when I hired her to take care of my dogs while living for a year in New York City. I chose Kate from several people listing dog care services on Craig’s List because, of all the ones I interviewed, I found her to be the most professional and conscientious, offering to meet the dogs and myself before the job began. As a pet sitter I found Kate to be competent, reliable, and proactive in addressing any problems that might arise but, above all, Kate is a caring, compassionate individual who genuinely takes an interest in the happiness and well being of her furry charges. Over the years, what began as a professional relationship became a friendship. I have never had any qualms leaving her with my pets in my home or entrusting her with their care. She has been to my home many times since we both returned to Michigan not only as a dog sitter and friend but also to help with catering and serving at parties. Kate also helped with dog walking and meal preparation the summer I was receiving chemo so I can recommend not only her culinary and animal skills but her people care skills as well. I hope you will consider Kate for whatever purpose she has chosen to give you this letter of recommendation. She will not only do her best for you, she will exceed your expectations.

My dog Trouble gets walked by Eli from Dawn of Dogs. Trouble is always excited to get walked by him, I provide bags and he always cleans my dog's paws when he gets back. He's always on time and also reliable for when I can't do night walks with Trouble. Eli has been great with Trouble and handling his walks, he gives feedback and when I'm not at home he lets me know pick up and drop off. I recommend him my dog is a rescue he has some antisocial behaviors with other dogs and Eli has been able to work greatly with that and give Trouble hour walks even time at the dog park. I'm happy with the dog walking service.

I was lucky enough to hear about Katy through a friend and have her watch my cats for a long weekend last month. I'd never have anyone else cat sit for me now as long as Katy's available! She's kind and caring and her love for animals is apparent. I love how she'd send me photos of my cats while I was away too! My cats were so calm and happy upon my return, which made me feel less guilty about leaving them. I highly recommend Katy Cat Care! She also has great experience taking care of animals in need of daily medications. Luckily, I don't have this problem, but it's nice to know in case of future needs.

I could not have asked for better cat sitters! They are professional, kind and are very obviously real animal lovers. Because Jorge is a vet tech I felt comfortable leaving my sick cat with him for a few days and having him administer fluids and medicines. They have reasonable prices and I totally trusted them in my home. Both jorge and another employee even took it upon themselves to FaceTime me so I could say hi to my babies.

I had the pleasure of meeting Adene when she came to feed and check on my cat several times this summer. She was thorough in asking what kind of care my cat needed, and was specific in how much time she would be able to spend with her. She clearly communicated the timing of her visits, and texted a picture of my kitty on each visit. Adene was wonderful and I will absolutely use her services again in the future! Highly recommended!

Best pet sitter ever for my cat and two birds. Trustworthy, reliable and follows all instructions. However, more importantly, she treated my pets with such love. My cranky bird, who hated everyone, would fly over to her, and sit in her palm as she sang him to sleep.

She calls me and texts me with any concerns she might have with regard to our dogs well being. She is always looking out for Casey's best interest and loves her as if she were her own. Mark, his son & daughter took good care of our dog Bear while we were away for a week. He was walked & groomed daily. Mark offered flexibility in case our schedule changed and was responsive to my texts. They accommodated my request that no other animals be in the household while caring for Bear and he received the attention that we wanted him to have rather than being boarded at a Kennel. Will definitely reach out to The Dawg House for future sittings.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

    • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
    • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
    • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
    • What are your different walk routes?
    • When will you pick up and drop off?
    • How will we communicate?
    • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
    • What’s your cancellation policy?
    • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
    • How and how often do I pay you?
    • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

    What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

    What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

    • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
    • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
    • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
    • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
    • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
    • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
