Jefferson was a complete professional from beginning to end. His communication was excellent, even when I changed the time at the very last minute. He showed up on time and came prepared with all the necessary tools, and he worked diligently for five straight hours putting together my IKEA furniture - some of which definitely needed his handyman expertise to assemble and/or repair. He was also careful to ensure that he didn't scratch my hardwood floors. Jefferson is polite and professional, and I would definitely hire him again for future assembly needs.

Jason came out very quickly and fixed the leaking pipe under our sink. There was still some water after he fixed what we thought was the problem. He took the time to repair that part and didn't charge extra labor. He even took a look at the dishwasher. The price was really reasonable and the work was done well. I would definitely use him again.

Jamel and his assistant Steve were great! Jamel was very responsive, he took the time to understand our needs and then made himself available on a day/time that worked best for us. They arrived on time and ready to help out with whatever we needed. They did everything from hang pictures, shelves and decor to helping consult on the best way to help baby proof some of our furniture etc. I'm thrilled with the way everything came out, now our apartment feels more like a home. On top of his professional and courteous manner, Jamel is an extremely nice person and it was a pleasure having him do work in our home. I should also mention that Steve, his assistant was just as nice and helpful. The price was completely fair for the time/work that was done. I would highly recommend his services and would without a doubt use him in the future.

Although I was extremely skeptical about hiring a stranger online to do work in my home, Travis provided me with a wonderful experience. Not only did he do exceptional work, he was very neat, well mannered and thoughtful. He even offered to mount this huge mirror I had resting against my bedroom wall. I will definitely hire him for all of my future home construction and installation needs!

It was a pleasure to have James Roa work in my home. He kept in communication with me beforehand, was on time and did what was requested of him and more. He could have assembled the pantry and left and really that’s all that was expected of him. BUT he did so much more. He accurately centered the pantry on the wall, made sure it was level, wiped out the inside and removed the stickers. Who does this???? James does! Afterwards he not only cleaned up after himself, but in addition vacuumed the carpeting to get up all the bits and pieces of Styrofoam and took the box and all the packaging outside. On a personal level he is enjoyable company with his good sense of humor and positive outlook. Hire James. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

I want to say that at first, I wasn't sure about Mr. Almonte's 5 star rating but, after working with him, I understand why he has so many 5 star ratings. He was very courteous, prompt (actually a little early), professional, CLEAN, and best of all, open to questions from a guy who doesn't know much about home repair. He worked very quickly and efficiently. I would recommend Mr. Almonte to anyone. He mounted my TV. I can't speak to other projects but, I'm sure he would bring the same level of professionalism to any and all future projects.

Kenneth was absolutely amazing. He was extremely communicative from the start and throughout the entire process. He was punctual, professional, insightful, and very nice. He worked on a couple home maintenance projects and helped us assess some other projects for further down the road. He showed up on time (he even said he could be early if need be!) and had all materials with him. I will absolutely hire him again and no one should hesitate to. Thanks, Kenneth!

We needed a plumbing repair late Sunday afternoon at my parents home (60 year old house with original copper plumbing). They had found water on the floor of their finished basement. It was not gushing, but a steady drip. We shut off the water to the house. Matt responded quickly through Thumbtack, and was at the house within a couple hours. It was a cracked fitting, which he repaired. Price was reasonable, he was professional and we will use him again. He also called the next day for follow-up.

Upon smelling smoke in our house (not normal for a basic routine power washing job) my husband went outside to check and as it turns out the technician burned a whole in our fence! He didn’t even stop what he was doing to make us aware. My husband had to ask him what happened! He just kept saying oh don’t worry about it we have insurance all nonchalantly. They promised to come back today to fix the damage they did to our property and are now backpedaling on their commitment. Still no word or appointment from them. Do not recommend! Extremely unprofessional. This could have all been avoided if they weren’t so careless with the machines and if they just handled and fixed their mess before moving onto other jobs.

Danny was great! My wife and I have lived in our home for a couple of years now and have had a bad string of luck when it came to hiring professionals to do a job. After my experience with Danny, he is at the top of the list. He finished our deck in two days and did an excellent job! So much so that I will be having him work on other jobs in my home in the coming weeks. Couldn’t be more happy with the results! Thanks Danny!!!

Jordan and his team worked diligently to complete the project(s) and my home. He and his colleagues are hard working, fair and honest. Jordan had to return to my home on multiple occasions to fix on last tricky light and did not rest until the job was done...nor did he up-charge me for the return visits. He's very pleasant and responsive to deal with - I highly recommend Jordan and his crew for any job big or small.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
