Janice came to my apartment in Manhattan to help with my German Shepherd who is having anxiety and agression issues. She gave me a few exercises to start with and within a few days I noticed a significant change in my dogs behavior. We have a long way to go but she is always available to help reinforce what she has taught me. Truely a Dog Whisperer. Julie

I contacted Jay to have him train 2 German Shepard pups which were 2 months old. From the moment I spoke with him I knew he cared about what he does. I signed up for the 5 week training. Jay was very good with the pups and knows exactly how to train them. I still have a lot of work to do with them but if it was not for Jay I would not be where I am today. I can have my 2 dogs and my 2 cats all in one room going about their daily living. I would highly recommend his training services.

Sandy was very helpful in training and calming down my 9 week old German Shepard puppy. She taught her how to sit and respond to her name in just the first session! She came to the house today at 2 and brought us treats and other helpful training items to use when she left. I started reinforcing the commands she showed her today and I can't believe how much progress she's made over just 24 hours! Sandys the best and I highly recommmend her to anyone with a wild, out of control dog.

We have had two training sessions with Ariana and our two four-month old Chow-Shepherd mixes, and we couldn't be happier with what she has taught the pups and us so far. The dogs adore her and respond well to her training techniques, and she clearly has a lot of in-depth knowledge and experience working with dogs and animals in general. I appreciate that she has a background in animal behavior, so she understands why they act the way they do and uses that to redirect their behavior. We look forward to many more sessions with her!

John is very responsible, flexible and experienced with all kinds of dogs. My German Shepherd is typically nervous around other pets and strangers but John, immediately won him over. He is also very good about staying in touch and sending updates about how the walk went.

I found Alice on-line and asked her to come and help with my dog, Maximus. He was a 3 month old German Shepherd that was pretty much out of control. He would always pull at the leash, bite ankles, wouldn't listen to any commands...etc. After just one private lesson with her, my dogs behavior changes drastically. She showed my wife and I ways to keep Maxi in check to make sure he grew into a smart, loyal and obedient dog. Max is now about 6 months old and has very few behavioral issues (still just a stubborn and playful pup) With her help, the problems we had before she came through my door are nowhere to be seen. Thank you Alice!

Margaret helped us with our 17 month old German Shepard, Bane. We wanted to focus on some key behaviors while incorporating general obedience. Over the past 7 weeks, we have experienced a great deal working with Margaret. She provided exceptional training for Bane and us as owners. We were so pleased with the progress we were seeing, we signed on for an additional 6 weeks of training. We will be sad when we no longer need her training. Margaret is incredibly knowledgeable about her dogs' behaviors and breeds and is 100% dedicated to her dogs!

My family's experience with the Dog Tamer was amazing. I called Tom when my German Sheppherd was about 10mos, in that conversation almost in tear's I told Tom I may have to get rid of her she just was a handful. I had tried another trainer I had bought every training device nothing was working she was jumpy, nippy and severely energetic. Tom had said let me come a few times and I guarantee you'll see a difference. Well within 1 session Bacci was a different dog, we did 3 additional sessions and each time he left i would just say wow how does he do that. Staying on top of Bacci keeping up with all Tom taught us has made it possible to keep her and can't imagine not having her now. Thank You Tom!

I do competitive dog sports. I have gone to Joe's K9 Training for coaching this past year.Joe has such a vast knowledge of dog behavior and training and is so willing to share it. Really enjoy watching his nationally competitive dog, Graff. Joe's K9 Training is fairly priced for high quality training. Due to Joe's help I and my female German Shepherd Dog have won High in Trial twice. i have observed Joe training clients with their dogs and the results are consistently above the rest.

Out of the many options for trainers, many of whom will cage your dog, barely work on it, or overcharge you 3x more, This woman is absolute perfection. As an owner of a very confused , stressed out and slightly disobedient King Shepherd due to his early history, she came and made a difference in about 7 lessons. Her quality of work is top notch, value of her knowledge is worth gold and speaking to her is very easy. She completely turned my dog around and he is now a very safe, obedient, respectful and happy dog. Anybody with any kind of behavior or training issues with their dog must hire her, she's a human made of gold.

Shipra is responsible and professional. She came for a meet and greet before scheduling walks and spent time to get to know my dogs ( German Shepherd mixes) . It was good to see that she is comfortable walking big dogs. She arrives on time to walk and sends updates after the walk. My dogs are comfortable and happy to walk with her!!!

I have 2 dogs...a Doberman Pinscher (Lexi) and a German Shepherd(Nikita). Erica has worked with both of them and even after one lesson I saw results. Erica began working with Lexi when she was 3-4 months old. We did kindergarden, advanced training and a few agility classes. I went to another place for lessons once (a "gift" from someone) and it made me see how great Erica was! Erica gets to know your dog and tailors the lessons for them whether in a private lesson or group class. For example, she dealt with Lexi's disruptive class behavior by either using her as the example dog or giving her more advanced things to do. She was never angry or punitive. When Lexi became dog aggressive, Erica came and worked with us to help resolve the issue. With Nikita she worked on building her confidence and bringing out her intelligence. (Nikita is young and gets distracted easily) Erica discovers what makes your dog respond (food,,,toys..kisses) and utilizes that to motivate them. No cookie cutter training here! I have recommended Erica to several other people and everyone was pleased.

I had Andria as my dog trainer a few months ago when i got a getman shepherd puppy. In under 10 minutes my pup already knew how to sit. She was extremely knowledgable and friendly and i felt extremely comfortable asking her questions about anything i was unsure about. I would definitely recomend Andria if your looking to learn alot and watch your dog constantly progress.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
