PROJECT: Remove and install an exterior door. Darin came to my home a few months ago to evaluate a project I listed on Thumbtack. He provided a quote in writing within hours of meeting us. He was one of a few contractors that presented a written contract that detailed the work he proposed. He arrived at each of our three meetings on time. He completed the job tasked efficiently and left the work space clean and clear. His work was excellent!!! My husband and I would hire HBR again...in a heartbeat!

Needed a basement finished that was started by another contractor. Work included drywall, taping, etc., some framing, floor repair, door and trim installation. Sam got it all done in less than a week at a fair price. He recommended a painter and a flooring man and they should be done in another week. Sam is a good guy and the quality of his work is fantastic! Would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him.

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

The job involved staining the deck, screwing in loose boards, and fixing two hand rails of a stairway of a deck that is roughly 980 square feet. I had also asked for the replacement of a crumbling sidewalk- roughly 175 square feet. Thomas Fredrick was fantastic. He was prompt in arriving to give the quote and pitching the price- which was very reasonable given the size of the job. He and his crew were prompt in arriving and quickly finished the deck in two days. The concrete work also took about two days- between the removal of all of the old concrete and pouring in the new foundation. All of my expectations were exceeded (which is rare for me), given the size of the job. Tom also took on the repair of one fence panel piece & replacement of a mailbox that had a broken cover. Any questions/requests that I had were quickly addressed (which rarely happens with some contractors). I am extremely satisfied and would consider TNS for future jobs and would highly recommend them to others in the area.

5 Stars are not enough for this contractor. Eric answered every question Marilyn and I asked during the two intensive remodeling conferences we had prior to hire. He made suggestions, measured, measured again, thought before he answered, and didn't give us a price off the top of his head. We were interested in his approach, his prior experience, his honesty and integrity. After all, if we were giving him permission to work in our home. Eric installed a new high end kitchen that delights my wife every time she opens a cabinet. Pleasing, efficient, well designed and laid out is the finish we received. We got more value than we paid for. Finally found a general contractor who stayed on the job every scheduled day until our work was totally completed. Once we saw Eric's experience in progress, we booked more work-- over 700 feet of new flooring, trim work, utility room to guest bedroom transformation, fan installation, duct work, sheet rocking, taping, painting, handyman type items. I can't say enough good things about Eric and his craftsmanship, honesty, and sincerity of performance. Interview him last. Whatever you pay, i assure you he is worth it and fair. Feel free to call me at 845-492-0261. I am a NYS Licensed Real Estate Broker and will be recommending Eric to my clients when they need a go to contractor with a varied skill set in all phases of remodeling and general contracting. The project was a non-typical home addition. As the contractor, Dan Barrett shared his years of experience when recommending project plan alterations that resulted in improving the original design plans. Throughout the entire process, the construction site was cleaned up at the end of each day and materials were kept covered and protected from the weather. The combination of a team of skilled craftsmen, the full use of quality materials and solid attention to detail resulted in a very strong and beautiful finish. Barrett Custom Carpentry, LLC provided professional workmanship, continuous communication with the client and their prompt and polite service provided a pleasurable experience Barrett Custom Carpentry, LLC is an ideal contractor to work with.

We hired pinnacle exteriors to replace our roof about 2 months ago. Upon meeting them at our scheduled appointment we were already happy as the previous 3 appointments we had with other contractors either didn't show up or showed up very late. We agreed on the work to be done and a schedule to do it and they did as they said throughout the entire process. The finished product was exactly what we hoped for and we couldn't be happier. We are hoping to do our windows in the next few months with Pinnacle Exteriors.

If you are looking for a honest professional technician to hire, All Valley Rooter & Plumbing is the best choice for you. According to my experience I would recommend this contractor because of his loyalty and professionalism. In fact I had a hug clogged toilets (2). After the inspection with camera, Jarred (the plumber) found that all my pipes are clogged because of broken pipes that allowed muds into them. He used the snake to show me the evidence and then suggested to me to replace all pipe. He dogged and I could see the pipes with mud inside. The work was done as planed. We talked about price before he began the work et he is not expensive. He charge me for the right price. After the work done, I wanted to give him a tip because I was very happy, but he declined saying I just pay the good price. I like also he availability and advice.

So I installed a band new laminate wood floor and it came out beautiful. Problem was a week later I had a water leak in the center of the room that ruined about 25 boards. Many contractors wouldn't touch it and it wasn't enough damage to justify home insurance so Paul came and looked at it. Paul walked me through the process of how he would take up the bad pieces and how he would replace them. The floor is now repaired and you would never be able to tell anything had happened. It looks new again and Paul did a great job for a reasonable price. I have no reason to ever call anyone else for my flooring needs.

Quick response. Communicative. Could've accepted Amex for payment but I understand why he didn't. At this point, it would appear he did indeed fix the problem. (My careful wording is reflective of my experience with other contractors - i.e. issue seems fixed for the moment but later on, shows itself to clearly NOT be fixed)

Firstly, I can't recommend Gary highly enough for any level of remodeling or renovation jobs you may be doing. We recently used Real Deal$ to remodel the kitchen, bathroom and a large portion of the living area in our home and have been delighted with the both the process and the results. Having worked in real estate/property development, I have worked with a number of other contractors and know when I'm working with someone who knows their business and takes genuine pride in the quality of the work they're doing- and that certainly describes Gary and the sub contractors he works with. Although I was pretty sure I wanted to use Real Deal$ based on a friend's recommendation, I wanted to get bids from other renovation contractors for our remodel just to be thorough. When compared with the other bids, I was very impressed with Gary's pricing and the level of detail outlined in his bid. Another big factor for me in choosing the right contractor was the lead time involved for the renovation. Most of the other contractors couldn't work within our time constraints- which was to have all of the remodeling completed in six weeks. We knew it would be tight but Gary absolutely pulled through for us. Both our kitchen and bathroom look amazing, and both are so much more functional than they were before. We were absolutely delighted (and surprised based on experience with other contractors) that the remodel stayed on schedule and within our budget. The remodel took the demolition of the kitchen, bathroom and part of the living space down to the studs and put it all back together again with new plumbing, electrical and heating. Gary helped source all of the new appliances and finishes through his vendors for the entire remodel which can be a handful if you haven't done it before. He provided us with numerous sources for our kitchen cabinetry also. All the work performed throughout the remodel is of the highest standard and we enjoyed working with Gary and all of his sub contractors. I also really appreciated how hard they all worked towards keeping the remodel on schedule and 'WITHIN OUR BUDGET'. Remodeling, or any kind of renovation, (whether big or small) can be very stressful- but having Gary as our contractor really helped alleviate the majority of our concerns and I will definitely be calling him for any future renovation needs we may have. I hired ER Fine Homes for a large painting project for the interior of my home. It was a great pleasure working with the owner Dan and I felt it necessary to take time to write this review because of his outstanding work. Dan is a true pleasure to work with because he is not only professional but he always promptly replies to your communication and carefully listens to your needs and or any concerns. Antonio, his painting supervisor, and the team of painters came to my home everyday for over 3 weeks and they were always on time, courteous, neat, respectful and did fantastic work with great attention to detail. I am so pleased with the work completed by ER Fine Homes we have already decided to hire them again for several additional upcoming general contracting projects. I would highly recommend this company-you will love them!!

Joe was amazing to work with. From the beginning where he came promptly and walked me thru every detail to the installation of my windows, working with Joe was a fantastic experience. I had reached out to several windows installers and he was the most honest contractor by far. He explained everything to me and was very thorough in answering all my questions. His crew did great work and was quick and clean which was great. I definitely will be working with Joe again and would highly recommend him to anyone in need of contractor services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
