I am 59 years old, a wife and a mother of 5 children. For the first time in my life, I had to hire a criminal attorney to defend my youngest son against criminal charges. I found Brian on the internet. He came to my home for our first visit and answered my many questions that I had about the case. He was not over confident which I appreciated, but he was optimistic, which I also appreciated.. He went to see my son in Northampton Prison as promised. I am aware of the vital importance of an attorneys representation, integrity and expertise when fighting for justice in a complex system. Therefore I will be giving reviews throughout the case to offer an honest evaluation of the legal services that my family receives. Why? Because although I did interview Brian and two other attorneys, Brian's reviews influenced my decision to hire him. Honest reviews are important. People trust them!

Mr. Cho provided exceptional and personalized service to my case. He was very assertive and precise with his approach. He has a wealth of knowledge which is applied strategically to each case. Personally I was very pleased with his approach, it made me comfortable. He was always on top of things and kept me updated with the progress. Although, there was a minor hiccup in between my petition - no fault of Mr. Cho. He was still able to produce maximum results in a timely manner. Mr. Cho is the perfect attorney for your immigration case. You will not be disappointed.

My daughter had 2 tickets that were going to trial on Sept 22. A cell phone and a no insurance ticket. The no insurance we had proof of insurance on, but was set for trial late October. I put in the request for an attorney late on Sept 20th. At 8pm in the evening is when I spoke with Mr. Lung. He emailed what he needed and payment options. Super easy payment and extremely reasonable rates. He appeared in court in Hauppauge (Suffolk County Traffic Violations Bureau) this morning. Yes this morning Sept 21st and he was able to get the cell phone and the insurance issue dealt with today. She did not have to take off of work to go to court. Very few traffic tickets need the client to appear for court. I highly recommend Mr. Lung. He spent a lot of time on the phone, made everything clear and concise. He's located in Nassau County, but was able to handle this Suffolk County issue within 14 hours!! Very impressive!

They handled two separate cases for me. One involving a Superior court matter and another was a local municipal matter. Their attorneys and staff were very knowledgeable and helpful, and they were always quick to respond. They were also helping in explaining every step of the process. I've used them for multiple cases and I would absolutely use them again.

I recommend Silvia Gaviria to anyone who needs smart guidance and action with immigration law matters. I needed such a lawyer and Ms. Gaviria was that lawyer. I married in Central America and needed to get a marriage petition drafted to get my wife into the United States and to start the road to legal residence. In each interview, I found Ms. Gaviria very thorough in getting from me every necessary fact to draft the best petition! She was very patient and so organized that it took her little time to get my facts together. Today, my wife has a proper green card and is authorized to work. We now continue to work with Ms. Gaviria to get my wife citizenship. We are very happy with her work, and so I have no hesitation reviewing Ms. Gaviria as a standout immigration lawyer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

    • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
    • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
    • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
    • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
    • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
    • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
