I live in a duplex apartment that has not been updated in 20 years! I am a single mother and know nothing about renovations. I interviewed a few handymen and when I met Pete, I knew he was the one for the job. He didn’t try to take advantage of me and was very reasonable. He was such an amazing help to me that I couldn’t believe I got so lucky. He was fantastic in taking my ideas and making them come true. I ended up redoing every room in my apartment including the bathroom. Pete even took me to Home Depot and the paint store so I can pick up supplies. He saved me a lot of money with his expertise in the products that I needed. He was always on time, a great communicator, extremely easygoing, trustworthy, respectful and always responded via text or a phone call when I needed him. He is an amazing guy! My son and I actually were joking that we were going to miss him when he was finished…. And we do! I will be hiring him again to hang an oversized picture above a staircase soon. I have run a business in Union, NJ for over 20 years, www.Njvision.com. I know how important reviews are for good hard working people and also as a customer. If you would like to reach out to me with any questions about Pete’s work, feel free to email me (Tuli Santiago) at my website. I am difficult to please….Do yourself a favor and stop looking. YOU FOUND HIM! Pete, thank you so much for all your hard work. Here is a picture of the living room floor. LOVE IT!!!!

James remodeled the kitchen, flooring and interior painting. His knowledge and professionalism is exceptional. He is very detail oriented. He went out of his way to recommend few things like missing exhaust in our kitchen. When you seek any suggestions, he doesnt treat it as a way to make more money and instead suggest us what is doable. Many other contractors were reluctant to install an island in kitchen but James is never hesitant to try out something that we requests for. He would be the go person for any of our remodeling needs. If any suggestions to improve, I’d suggest to have frequent discussions with the client on site in person (sometimes text communications make it tough) and you’d be outstanding in your profession. I highly recommend James to any of your construction or remodeling needs.

Good quality work - very conscientious tradesmen. They did not hesitate to do over anything I asked them to and when rain had affected the stain on the deck, they re-painted the whole deck. It all looks great. I will use them again.

New flooring was installed throughout our work office. The process in general went fairly smoothly. The timeline was extended a bit, but because working hours are limited in a doorman building that could have been expected. All in all a great job!

Hands down the best mover we have used! They were right on time, very friendly, and did an excellent job moving some very heavy and big furniture out of a 3 floor apartment. Even better, their complimentary cleaning service made the apartment look good as new. I could not recommend them any more - Use them!!

Rick and his guys did a total gut kitchen reno for me. Kitchen came out amazing and exactly for the price we agreed to in the beginning (which was much cheaper than a lot of the other Montclair contractors). His guys were always on time, curteous and very hard working. Rick was also very easy to work with and I highly recommend!! I’ll definitely use him on other projects in the future.

We had Eagle refinish our hardwood floors and install tile flooring. They did an amazing job. They also did the job lightning fast. Angel and his crew were always available to talk and responsive whenever we tweaked what we wanted done. I highly recommend them and plan on using them again in the future.

I called a few plumbers and most didn't seem trustworthy and knowledgeable. I reached JA & J Renovations on the first ring and he was able to explain what needs to be done. I have two hot water heaters and one broke. He installed a shut off valve so that in the future either one can be turned off if in need of repair and he replaced the broken one. All of the work was completed the next morning after I called. Excellent service, timely and very fairly priced. I highly recommend this company.

Sonna was professional, punctual, precise and thorough and I highly recommend working with him! He replaced all of our interior hallway, bathroom and closet doors, managing the purchase of all hardware, doors and casing. He had not only the best estimate in terms of dollar amount but also on speed of getting the job done. The turnaround was super fast on getting the materials purchased and the job started and he finished one day late (our building has really restrictive hours that he didn't know about beforehand). At the end, when one of the magnetic door holders was broken, he even went out, bought a new one, and came back to fix it on another day. If we ever do any more work, we'd love to work with Sonna again!

These guys do what they say they will do and don't try to find ways to get more money out of you during construction. Actually the opposite, they used their relationships with vendors to negotiate even a better price on materials than I would have gotten on my own. Very honest and I've recommended them to other homeowners who also love their professionalism and work. A++

It's been a pleasure to work with Nick and his crew. We needed major exterior work done, new siding, roof repairs and more random work. I have worked with a lot of contractors, and so far Nick’s crew have been impressive. They have the experience and knowledge to give us good recommendations and helped us to save money by reducing the scope of unnecessary work. Their fee are also reasonable, we would have spent much more if not for their experienced inputs. Thank you, guys! Will definitely hire them again.

I am a interior designer in New York. I hired Innovators to renovate a one bedroom for a client in a top co-op building in NYC. The building had strict guidelines for any alterations. Edward and his crew were very careful to follow the building regulations and rules which is very important when working on many of the buildings in NY. Innovators has a great pull of skilled workmen and sub contractors. Many of his workers are multi-skilled and professional. We are at the end of the renovations and are please with the outcome. We will use Innovators again in future projects. Giselle Ulmo Giselle Ulmo Design

We did a major reno tearing out our existing kitchen and replacing it with high end cabinetry, appliances, lighting, flooring, etc. It is a large space and their work was first rate. Stayed on schedule, great crew and sub contractors such as electrician, flooring and finishing as well as securing the apt to minimize dust from the demolition. Great guys! Very professional and honest.

I hired New Space after interviewing 4 contractors and are very pleased I did. As a graphic designer, I'm very selective in picking the right company to renovate my new apartment in New York City, one who is design oriented and has excellent references. Their work is beautifully crafted with care and attention to detail. From complex plumbing work to detailed custom millwork, I was impressed with their professionalism and quality. I was very happy to work collaboratively with Alex, Tom, Frank, and their crew and look forward to working with them again on my design studio projects next year. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for professional fine quality renovation and a smooth construction process.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
