I cannot say enough great things about Tara and Sweet Harmony. My husband and I had a harp and violinist at our wedding and it was the best decision we could have ever made!! We had been guests at a wedding last year with a violinist for the ceremony provided by Sweet Harmony and we knew we wanted the same vibe for our day. Tara was so helpful and accommodating the entire time leading up to the wedding. Any time I had a question (and I had a lot!), she was so sweet and willing to assist. The music was perfect for the day we had envisioned and the musicians were extremely professional and charismatic. All of our guests the entire night and weeks to follow, kept complimenting us on choosing to have the harp and violin as opposed to a DJ or band. We chose to have the musicians play for the ceremony and stay for most of the dinner reception. Everyone thought it was amazing that we had a harp! I felt so confident in our decision to go with Sweet Harmony before our wedding but felt even better about it during and after with all of our guest's feedback! I hope to have another event that I can use Sweet Harmony for! I cannot say enough great things, LOVE LOVE LOVE Tara and Sweet Harmony!!

I took guitar lessons from Jimi on a fairly constant basis for about 3 years. The best and most unique feature of his teaching style is the balance between the freedom Jimi gives students in what they want to achieve musically, and the structure that he provides students with that will allow them to reach that goal. Personally, I learned advanced rock and jazz guitar techniques and improvisation from Jimi, and I am very happy with my current level of ability. Especially helpful is his extremely coherent way of explaining often over-complicated music theory. Jimi treats his students with an optimistic and respectful attitude, and creates a very welcoming and encouraging environment for the music student.

I briefly took guitar lessons from Josh. I wanted to learn to play with other musicians and improvise, and his jazz background is what caught my attention. The sessions were informative and Josh was very encouraging. I had to stop unexpectedly but what I learned in the few lessons I took was very helpful and got me out of the rut I fall into while practicing on my own.

Marty is an outstanding vocal coach. My 15 year old daughter has been studying under his direction for only 5 months, and I've seen a marked improvement in her range and maturity as a vocalist. Marty has been flexible in working with her hectic schedule. He's been able to help her prepare different styles of performances from rock solos and backup vocals (with Jon Bon Jovi!) to Broadway pieces.

Marla Mase is an extraordinary event planner, creator of party magic and Producer! After having been in the business for a couple of decades and working in so many different venues, types of events, parties and performances, Marla has an incredible team. She’s amassed a phenomenal, devoted group of performers, artists, designers & caterers whom she employs at all her parties, depending on need and skill set. I have worked with Marla on several creative projects and events and had a ball working with her. She is the ultimate professional, but always works in a relaxed, easygoing fashion. She is open to discussion and will always brainstorm to bring ones vision to life. Recently she produced a Rock show and party in Tribeca for me that hosted an amazing band, along with several international actors, dancers and singers. Marla hired one of her designers to transform the old Tribeca firehouse into an underworld of sea creatures and magic. It was spectacular. The food was a beautifully abundant array of hors devours and beverages. Hailing from Tribeca and having worked in the New York area for so many years for hundreds of high-end clients, Marla is truly cutting edge. She has an eye for the unique, and is able to adapt to the vision of her client. Marla really gets the job done. She’s personable and lovely and I always feel I’m in good hands with her at the helm.

I follow Nico's gigs as regularly as possible and have been doing so ever since her fledgling days as a singer song-writer. I love her original music as it has captivating melodies and heartfelt lyrics . She is quite tenacious in getting herself "out there" and in so doing, she leaves me breathless with all the things she does to promote her talents at any one time. I like to go with friends to hang out at her various gigs and be entertained by her while casually enjoying good food rather than a cover band with very loud music. Nico is a very talented singer and musician who plays different instruments equally well.

I had started getting into Latin music a little over a year ago when I met first met Nick Herman. Originally, I tried to learn to play Latin percussion (congas, bongos, timbales etc.) from books and instructional videos. I also tried lessons with a few different musicians. I was at it for months, however, I found my progress to be very slow. Eventually, I confronted Nick about lessons. After only 5 lessons, my bongo playing had improved exponentially! I would play my bongos with other musicians in the park and after one or two songs, many people would compliment me on my playing. One night I played a duet with a guitarist who would compliment me on my playing after every song. Later, I came to find out he was the leader of a salsa band who frequently performed around the city! Shortly after that I made Nick my official trainer on the bongos and cowbell! Nick Herman also leads his own band. I think anyone who is serious about learning Latin percussion would benefit greatly by having Nick as an instructor. I wish I had began lessons with him sooner!

Chanan was a joy to work with! Knowledgeable and skilled and very creative. He helped produce a record of sacred music for me and also provided back up guitar for my band when needed a few times in Dallas. He is an exceptional engineer and guitar player with a fine ear for detail.

Nick West is THE best. He’s the creme de la creme...the cats pajamas, the bees knees and the real McCoy. For recording studio sessions he’s a One-Take-Jake with any style of music and he has a bottomless reserve of creative ideas. Onstage, in concert, he’s not only rock steady musically but his love for the music always shines through. Our fans always tell me what a great time it looks like he’s having while he’s playing. Plus he’s the consummate professional: easy going, great sense of humor, always shows up early for rehearsals and shows and is the kind of guy you would hang out with more if he wasn’t so dang busy! West is the best. Get him while you still can.

I hired Marta Blazquez with her band- in this case I asked for q quartet with saxophone- for playing dinner jazz at my weeding this past summer. It was great to work with her, everybody was really reliable and showed up in time! The band brought all the instruments and equipment they needed. I love jazz and asked for my favorite songs. It was no problem for them to take requests- she has a great repertoire of music and everybody was really professional!

"Riddim Licensing" Jim and his studio band HiFi Rockers served me up some of the most authentic sound reggae.. I was delighted and I was treated very well throughout the whole process. Jim is very knowledgeable in the reggae music production and sound. Not many people can pinpoint the exact tonal characteristics these days. I have found that they don't use much vintage equipment so again, it was a great surprise to hear such impeccable work. The band is super tight, like glue. They are extremely knowledgeable on how to phrase reggae correctly but also understand the fundamentals of music in general. I will definitely use them in the future for a full production.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
