Manny is AWESOME! He helped me hang curtains and blinds on 2 windows in my bedroom. He was very punctual (actually early) for our appointment. Manny is professional, knowledgeable and great at what he does. I really appreciated him taking the time to not only explain what he was doing but also teaching me about drills and wall anchors as he went along. 10/10 would recommend Manny to friends and family who need help with projects around the house. Thank you again Manny!!

Jerome was fantastic! He finished assembly of a 6 drawer Hemnes dresser from Ikea in just 2 hours! He was also super accommodating and measured windows for my new apartment so I could purchase blinds. The dresser looks terrific and I plan to request his expertise for future products.

I am giving Varian an outstanding rating because he successfully resolved an difficult emergency situation despite some confusion in the process. He re-installed 2 very large heavy window air conditioners [24,000BTU and 18,000 BTU] I had in winter storage on a hot day when my regular installer defaulted. Somehow he was not aware at first that he would need a helper but while waiting he helped me with sealing up some other window frames in the apartment. He was cooperative and professional. He reinstalled the AC's in accordance with some of my particular requirements. The job cost more than I expected but was worth it. Next time I will make sure the service guy gets the job description from Thumbtack.

Walter is a true professional, very skillful and precise to detail, as well as a gentleman. I hired Walter for a smaller project of reseating an exterior back door. He met me at my home to look at the task and give me a price which was competitive to the other professionals on this site. He was able to confirm right away that we needed to reinstall the door with the proper support. He told me what materials were needed and I went to Home Depot that evening to pick them up. 10 minutes at HD and I see Walter loading a couple sleds with material for another big job. I say hello and he stops everything he's doing to help me run around the store to gather the material needed for my project. Two things should stand out to someone hiring someone for a job. 1. This guy works and he must be good to get a project this size and 2. His selfishness in taking the time to help a client gather the right stuff. He shows up on time for our appointment after first calling me 30 minutes prior to meeting and says he's on his way. He was very prepared and put down proper drop clothes to protect everything from debris and dust. I'm that annoying homeowner that likes to watch what's going on and Walter didn't mind at all. He informed me of every step along the way. We ran into a slight issue which took a little more time than we both expected but understandably that what usually happens when you're fixing someone else's mistake. At the end of a full day he had removed the pre hung door, inserted the proper headers, replaced the footers with pressure treated wood, patched the concrete meeting the footer, waterproofed the footer, reseated the door, and trimmed out the finishing with the casings I bought to match our windows and a saddle. My wife and I are very happy with the outcome and as I told Walter, we will be calling him for other projects. As a homeowner you only wish that someone will take the time and not cut corners, as if the work they were doing was on their own home. We feel that way after working with Walter. Thanks again!

Very happy with the service provided. Stayed in touch throughout, kept the appointments and showed on on time. All work was done very well. Nobody else wanted to repair my windows, everybody wanted to replaced them - he picked it up and fixed the windows saving me a chunk of money. Thanks!

Juan (and his assistant) provided exceptional service and detailed work in addressing water damage to our kitchen ceiling and a bedroom window frame. The project encompassed replacing damaged sheetrock, re-taping drywall seams, and painting. During the project, Juan kept us apprised of his progress and repeatedly asked if we have any questions and concerns.

Great job handling some bumps in the project. We had 3 basement windows replaced. We ordered new construction windows instead of replacement, so that added complexity but Darin was still able to complete the work quickly and make the finished product look great. He stuck to his initial quote even though it must have taken him more time than expected. The job required a lot of tools and mess but he left things looking tidy. He was also very responsive as we set up the appointment. Would definitely hire again. Thanks!

THANK YOU, Seagull Cleaning Services!! Kazeem did a wonderful job cleaning decades of dust & grime from an historic home. There was build-up in every corner & along the baseboards, all the windows were cloudy, & the oven was just gross. Light is literally reflecting off the floors now! From creepy to clean in like 4 hours. I’d never be ready for move-in day of it weren’t for Kazeem. He’s also super pleasant & professional. Highly recommend. I’ll definitely be a returning customer.

Needed a portable air conditioner installed in a room without any windows. David promptly returned my message, came over within a few hours and not only installed the unit, but did so in a professional and innovative manner. Proud to say I have hired him back for a few other jobs and will keep him close by as I renovate my home.

I received a response from Richard immediately. We set up a time the next morning (because it was already after 5pm when I sent the request through Thumbtack) for him to pick up the window frame, replace the glass, and install the window. He kept me informed along the way because I was at work when he replaced the window (on my front porch). I also needed assistance finding a replacement frame for another window. Although, he didn't have the replacement frame he found a shop that did have what I needed. Richard was very friendly and professional. I would definitely recommend him to a friend and use his company for any future projects.

I was having such a hard time finding someone to remove and install a new window. From the outset, I could tell they were professionals. Alex was very responsive and came by for an in person quote the next day. He was also very quick to respond to my many follow up emails, including to show proof of insurance, etc. The window installation process went so smoothly, I could hardly believe it. Fixing that window has been on my to-do list for 2+ months, and Alex and his team took care of it in less than a week. Amazing! Highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
