Let me start off by saying that I myself am a hair stylist & make up artist who works with bridal clients so I am very picky when selecting an onsite hair/stylist & makeup artist, hence my detailed review... I selected Vesta because she responded quickly & provided the information I requested without my having to ask for additional information. When corresponding with her via email & phone she responded in a timely manner and she was extremely professional & friendly. She also provided prices that were within the bridal party's budget. Vesta was booked to provide hair styling services to 3 bridesmaids & 1 mother of the bride. She arrived on time was well prepared, personable, professional. Everyone looked great & for the most part all hair styles stood the test of time. She was able to style a variety of hair textures, which we needed because we joked that the bridal party was the United Nations! She also provided full & partial up-do's & a lasting voluminous blowout on a bob. Of the 4 who received services only one bridesmaids curls began to fall before the actual wedding ceremony. I think the falling curls were due in part to the need for more hair spray and/or tighter curling and the fact that the bridesmaid should have picked another hair style given how long her her hair was. Either way, we were able to touch things up with a curling iron and the hair style was restored back to it's original glory. Overall Vesta was awesome to work with & clients will be very pleased with her professionalism & artistry. Thanks for being so flexible and wonderful Vesta!

They did an amazing job with my hair for my wedding day. Originally I had planned on getting it done at a salon but last minute changed my mind and they saved me! With about two weeks left before the big day I didn't think we could get someone but luckily they were able to send someone. They were able to work with me to get to my house early so that we could all get our hair done on time. DJ did an amazing job and we all loved it. Thank you!!

Ochanya is an absolute pleasure to work with! She arrived on time with her own lighting, answered my questions about the makeup process and the products she used on my face, listened to my concerns on certain products (my skin is sensitive and breaks out at the mere mention of MAC or Smashbox) and does BOMB hair. Love her! Can’t wait to use her services in the future.

I just worked with Sarah yesterday for my wedding. I ended up finding her after having a bad experience with a salon I originally was planning on working with. She picked up the pieces for me after everything fell through with this other salon (three weeks before the wedding!) and did such an amazing job. She was there on time, finished on time, really listened to everything we wanted, and she even answered all of our crazy makeup/skincare questions. She made everyone look like the absolute best versions of themselves. I can't rave about her enough!!! As the bride, she made me feel so special and she really worked hard to make sure I was happy with the final look of the makeup. She also recommended a fantastic hairstylist who was as equally amazing. I truly had such a great, stress-free experience with these ladies and I would not have changed anything about the awesome artistry they provided. Thank you Sarah!

I hired Emily with Love n Glow to do the wedding makeup for my bridesmaids and I and I am so glad that I did! I had my makeup trial with Emily the morning of my bridal shower so she made me look beautiful for that event and I got endless compliments on my makeup. She even traveled to my apartment to do the trial which made that hectic day a little easier! I had an early morning wedding so we started doing hair and makeup at 5am and Emily was there ready to go when we needed her. Worrying about if and when vendors will get there on the day of the wedding is not something you want to deal with and even having met Emily only once before, I knew she was reliable and had total trust in her being there on time even with such an early call time. One of the big warnings I got with wedding makeup is that some makeup artists apply makeup so heavily that you don't look like yourself. Emily chose such beautiful shades for our makeup and had such a nice balance so that my bridesmaids and I looked AMAZING, especially in the photos, but so natural that you don't look and say, wow, they have a ton of makeup on. A lot of the girls in the party, myself included, don't wear a lot of makeup on an everyday basis and she was still able to pull off this professional look of natural beauty. My mom owns a beauty salon so I can be very picky when it comes to my hair and makeup, but I wouldn't have wanted anyone else doing my makeup on my wedding day. I am so happy I found Emily and hope I have an excuse to have her do my makeup again in the future. :)

Jessica was just awesome. She definitely knew how to get the look I was going for. Her pricing was spot on (I was going to drive to two different salons for my four bridesmaids to have hair done on my wedding day, but realized it would cost almost the same to have Jessica come to US!) Much more relaxing to have mimosas and apps than to be coordinating multiple cars. Jessica also has a make up artist (Nancy) that she works with seamlessly. They somehow were both able to work on my bridal beauty ;) at the same time. Note: no matter if you are getting hair done at a salon or at your site, it takes about 45 minutes - 1 hour for each person to get hair done, so plan around that timeframe. Hope that helps!

I needed my make-up done for a wedding I was attending. I normally don't wear a lot of make up on a day to day basis, so I told Lu I wanted a natural yet pretty look. Lu was outstanding!! I left the salon feeling like a million bucks! Not only did she apply the makeup, she explained to me what she doing as she did it, so I wouldn't be nervous. I can't recommend Lu enough!!! She is a make-up genius!!

I cannot recommend Hairsay Salon highly enough. They have done my cut, highlights and most recently a blowout. Each time they are knowledgeable, honest, and detailed. I came in with so much frizz and broken hair and left with straight smooth hair. The true test is after the first wash and I couldn't be happier with how smooth and easy my hair was to style. Thanks Hairsay Salon!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

    What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
